Going to be playing a dwarf in my next campaign and I'm wanting to make a list of dwarvish proverbs/sayings that I can throw out any chance I get. What are some good ones I should use?

Was Gygaxian role-playing more masculine than our contemporary role-playing approaches?

>As pertaining to Gary Gygax, late co-creator of Dungeons and Dragons. Noted for extremely lethal traps and puzzles which rewarded the player for proceeding with paranoid caution. Frequently resulting in total party kills or instant death or dismemberment of a character.

Those were tournament modules meant to be like that, not how it he usually played. He made them because his players (mostly Rob and Ernie, I think, IIRC) complained his dungeons were too easy, so he created a killer dungeon to kill them off. They both got through Tomb of Horrors solo, first time, with no problem. Basically aced the killer dungeon. The full story was on here some time ago. So, yeah, RP was more masculine back then, especially the badass players, so you needed the killer dungeons to keep them in check.
>>
>>47734824
It's important to remember a couple things when considering Gygax's legacy
>Gygax's play style didn't just pop up whole cloth. It was designed around players who would purposefully exploit the game.
>Most of the incredibly deadly modules written by Gygax were designed for tournament play not normal campaign play
In relation to the OD&D in general
>While most rules were pertaining to traps and combat the players were mostly meant to occupy themselves with roleplaying problems and puzzles. The rules where mostly intended to move parts that were to variable for common sense along.
>The reaction chart meant that many encounters could be solved with talking
>While Gygax is the most well known contributor to D&D, Arneson formed most of the core concepts for RPGs as a whole. He was much less focused on tables and mechanics than Gygax, tending more towards story telling and Player and DM rulings.

This isn't to say Gygaxian role-playing is or is not more masculine compared to our contemporaries but I think these things should be kept in mind from the get go.

What mechanical effect should being especially lucky or unlucky have in RPGs?
33 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>47733730
I'm more in favor of letting your own luck decide. You are already rolling dice, let fate decide.
>>
>>47733730
From Pathfinder, and more specifically its SRD:

Bonus

Bonuses are numerical values that are added to checks and statistical scores. Most bonuses have a type, and as a general rule, bonuses of the same type are not cumulative (do not “stack”)—only the greater bonus granted applies.

Bonus Type: Luck
A luck bonus represents good (or bad) fortune. Multiple luck bonuses on the same character or object do not stack. Only the highest luck bonus applies.
Can Affect: AC, attacks, checks, damage, saves

So basically the simplest way of rendering luck mechanically is a simple bonus, or minus, to a roll.
>>
>>47733730
Depends on the system/setting but you could make them roll a smaller dice size.

Keep away from static modifiers would be my advice. They're boring, hard to carry, and your player will look for a way around them.

Well, the one time I played a super hero system we made God-tier characters. Mine was a telepath capable of casually mind controlling dozens of people at a time, so I'm pretty safe. The rest were in various editions of D&D and a few sessions of runescape before I dropped the system.

Do you think it's a bad idea to let NPCs become nobles, rulers or even kings? Does it really limit roleplaying, or does it only expand your options for different stories even further?

I know. I just like ribbing people.

To answer your question, no I don't think it's a bad idea. Nor do I think it's a limiting option.

It all depends on if it's something the players really "deserve" or if you're just pulling it out of your ass.

Okay, so we're an Iron Hands successor, founded in the 40th Millenium, on a Crusade. We hate Heretics and have a tendency to destroy everything. Being an IH descendant, we have a fondness for bionics but we’re not as manic about it as our predecessor.

Our Occulobes are oversensitive, which gives us 'night vision' but makes it hard for us to see in 'daylight', but are otherwise fine mutation-wise. Because of this Bionic Eyes are the most common augmentation to be seen in our chapter.

One of our old Chapter-Masters was a fucking badass who led many glorious campaigns and slayed countless foes of the Emperor... until, for reasons unknown to us, he was slain along with a significant portion of our chapter by the Officio Assassinorum (it might have something to do with our tendency to destroy everything when we fight, however), leaving us understrength.

Our Homeworld is a Feral Desert world, called Kerakion, that we really only bother with when we need something/something important happens, otherwise we let the Planetary Governor run it for us. Most of our Space Marines come from Kerakion, but we use some other feral worlds for recruitment too.

We diverge from the Codex Astartes a bit, but not too much, and specialize in Terror tactics. We have a special fighting style (general consensus is that we use dual chain-axes, though that could still change) which helps us with that, possibly helped along by our buddies in the Admech.

We venerate the Emperor above all, like any good Imperial Citizen should, and have an immense hatred for the Emperor's Children, especially one particular EC-led warband, called the Scions of Lust, that we slaughtered at one point. Unfortunately enough members escaped to reform the Warband with new recruits - most of the survivors were Emperor’s Children, who are much more resistant to our terror tactics than the mortal cultists.
>>
TL;DR We’re a loyalist Iron Hands descendant whose tactics are kind of a mix between the World Eaters’ and the Night Lords’, with a hateboner for the Emperor’s Children.

>[Still Unnamed Chapter]'s Tactics

>The [Insert Name Here] are a lesser-known descendant of the Iron Hands, known primarily for slaughter of the Scions of Lust, a Slaaneshi-worshipping Chaos warband led by some Emperor's Children traitor marines, during the Battle of Mytus V.

>The [Insert Name Here] are usually recruited from Feral Worlds, especially their Homeworld of Kerakion, a harsh Desert planet that spends half the year locked in day and the other half locked in night due to it's rather bizarre orbit around it's system's star. Because of this, their armour is often decorated with primitive trinkets, such as the remains of their enemies, with the purpose of intimidation.

>While the trinkets probably help, the primary reason the [Insert Name Here] are so effective in inducing terror into their enemies comes down to their habits of forcing their enemies to fight them in the dark where they have an advantage, their brutal fighting style, their relationship with the Adeptus Mechanicus usually allowing them to get bionics specifically crafted with intimidation in mind and other associated tactics that were definitely not inspired/taken from records of the Night Lords, because that would be heresy..

They're probably going to wait even longer this time to build up the tension before releasing the set symbol and everything. I honestly think they're waiting so long because they heard the collective groaning sigh everyone made when they realized it was going to be Emrakul, so they're desperately renaming mechanics and recomissioning art. They changed Kozilek's art with like 5 days notice, so I"m sure they can redo a set like this with as many months as they've had.

What are some plot points, characters, character dynamics etc. you want(ed) to feature in a game or base a game around but never got around to?

>>
I've always wanted to run a game where the players take on the archetypes of rogue, wizard, fighter, and cleric, and do their best to pin down what each of those classes should aspire to be like, while going through classically designed adventures that culminate in saving a princess in a tower from a dragon.
>>
Pirates of the Carribean-style hunt of a ghost ship, with the players becoming its crew with its old captain tagging along as advisor/bound power source.

I got as far as doing all the preliminary research, but it just never materialized.
>>
Always wanted to do an incredible journey themed game.

Whole party are awakened animals who were friends of a druid in a small village. Each took a character class based on their species (cat who slept in the mage's tower became a wizard, the loyal dog became a paladin, the owl became a cleric, and the wolf and former animal companion of the druid became a druid, etc etc).

Then a fire hits the village, and the druid goes missing. The animals now must travel across creation to find him.
I got as far as planning a wolf pack who would have to be negotiated with for help or destroyed in self defense.

GW still sell most of them under weird names like how dwarfs are now "Dispossessed" like:
https://www.games-workshop.com/en-EU/Longbeards

But you should never buy GW stuff direct from them ever you can always get better prices elsewhere, like

or whatever

Sigmar is a more streamlined 40k with Fantasy trappings, it's only about as bad as 40k and plenty of people play that.

I love the World Eaters at the point during the heresy when they are getting closer to being completely fucked but still maintain some brotherhood
Angron is becoming more and more insane and the men are regularly losing themselves to the nails. Some individuals like Kharn and the librarians are looking on in horror as they realise what is happening to the legion.
I feel like when ascends they become fairly 1 dimensional killers without much personality and before the heresy they are a bit soft. Am i the only one?
I want my World Eaters to be frozen in time almost but still progress through time. So what is the best way to explain this in lore?
>Survivors of the drop site massacre?
>Small group lost in warp?
>Librarian with a few hundred runs from the legion when they realise shits fucked?
>Some forgotten company off exploring
>OTHER???
Basically i want to explain in the lore how a small group of 50-300 marines managed to avoid turning fully to chaos as world eaters. help plox?
Or am i retarded and just want to have my cake and eat it?

Any other World Eater related stuff is fine too like models, stories, trivia, opinions etc y'know

I don't exactly follow what you intend to do. First of all, are these guys supposed to be Loyalists, Traitors, or simple renegades?

If they're cut off from the rest of the Legion and particularly if they haven't campaigned with the Word Bearers, then it's definitely possible that they maintain a semblance of brotherhood and don't fall deeper into Chaos (otherwise they wouldn't survive very long alone).

The best course of action I can see would be to fluff them out as renegades or Blackshields (if you want to change the heraldry). Have them slip anchor and desert after the Dropsite Massacre, having seen first hand how fast their Legion and the Traitors are disintegrating.

Since they can't exactly run to the Imperium without falling under serious suspicion, they turn to piracy and raiding, perhaps even eventually carving out a chunk of the void for themselves as a base of operations.

I think they would be anti-emperor as they want to be 'free' but not give up that freedom by serving chaos. So yeah some bros hanging out being pirates and shit would work
I'm not massively sure on what i want them to do so sorry for not explaining it well
I'm open to ideas
They could be trying to just pretend nothing changed (or be unaware of it) and keep heraldry etc
They could be trying to prove that their primarch was justified and keep up traditions like hatred of psykers and the nails
They could be trying to distance themselves from the heresy and abandon the nails and return to brotherhood and War hound traditions
I'm not sure which narrative i prefer
Which do y'all think is most relalistic or cool or whatever?
