Oh, I've read a lot about the ancient world, mainly Europe. Not so much about China though.

I'd certainly add gladiatoral games and slavery to a mainly-China empire, but I feel it would be out of place without other stuff.

And yes, players will probably ignore those facts, but I like them anyway. I mean, whenever the setting is something even resembling fantasy they just picture a fully medieval setting. It's like 'historical' movies about stuff pre-1500, they think everything that has swords on it is the same.

It's impossible to speculate because nothing you've said has any basis in fact. There's nothing to indicate non-physical things exist. Thinking and imagining about it is fine and natural bit there's utterly no point in discussing it with others.

There really aren't any terrible call of Cthulhu games out there. Basic Chaosium CoC is the go to, and Delta Green is good for modern stuff.

That's really all there is to it. Avoid d20 CoC stuff, and you're golden.

Can't go wrong with a slave rebellion/breakout. If it's a thing that's legal in your setting, just have the players all start out in the hands of a very powerful... "collector" of sorts. Whether it's for the purposes of arena combat, or just to show off the variety of "product" being offered to potential customers.

Just be sure to have the escape happen rather quickly before things get into some sort of S&M magical realm, OK?

I've had a DM start us out as slaves who were purchased by a bandit/mercenary who forced us to raid villages. When we decided to stop killing innocent people we made a run for it and spent the rest of the game being hunted by the bandit leader and trying to find out how to bring him down

The main problem with that is, its not very INTERESTING to play mechanics wise. I usually play characters with average level intelligence. I personally may be a bit above average intelligence IRL, but its basically the same level. Whereas playing a supergenius can be difficult as you are actually dumbing your character down with your actions as... you are not as smart as your character should be.
