Thoughts on hirelings, and how to do them well?

What sets apart a hireling from a DMPC?
15 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>

The players in the typical roleplaying game are already better than the normal person... so all you have to do for hireling is make them normal people. They're not the heroes because they're too incompetent, cowardly, weak, or have an actual sense of self-preservation ect. A DMPC is a DM character who's actually on par with the players. A hireling is just meant to be some schmuck normie the party paid to do something for them.

Rope.
Lots of rope.
A grappling hook, some pitons and a hammer too.
Just too damn useful.
Lock a door by nailing a piton on the inside of it.
Rescue people from pit traps with rope.
Trip pursuers with rope.
Take down riders with it too.
Climb shit
Swing over chasms
Tie up prisoners
Hang That Guy.
So many uses from three common items.
Dont forget that tieing the rope to a rock can be used as a makeshift weapon and trap tripper

What's it like on Khorne's skull throne?

Hot?

Cold?

Does he have people to shovel more skulls on if they get crushed?

Has Khorne ever slipped on his skulls trying to sit in his skull throne?

Well, considering its the seat of an incredibly powerful entity in the center of his domain in a plane of existence where the laws of physics don't exist except at the whim of beings inside of it, I'd say its perfectly comfy.

I'm pretty sure the throne is metaphorical.

I highly doubt Khorne is sitting on anything, much less having any physical form to do so with.

>In the far future, two men were caught in an FTL singularity event
>This blasted the projections of their souls into the fabric of reality, the ether
>They became immortal and unstuck in time
>At first, they were as gods, exploring new found power
>But then one set about insuring no others would ever suffer their fate, never achieve their strength
>It was discovered that they were not fully unstuck in time
>They could only manifest themselves near FTL events...
>Or near large losses of human life
>The one began engineering catastrophes so that he could manifest before singularity events
>And it eventually became apparent that countless thousands of tragedies were caused by him
>So the other began to hunt him, but they had drifted apart in time
>Every time they lost each other, they would live for thousands of years before encountering each other again
>Or perhaps merely a few minutes for one, or even an earlier incarnation
>This war raged between them for millions of years, spanning the sum of human civilization beginning to end

>And this is where all of the gods of this (fantasy) world have come from
>There are only two, but both of them flicker through time, living but not aging
>The myriad incarnations of so-called pantheons are all but faces of these two in their war

Could this make a decent setting, you think? I feel like the divine drama would never actually come up.

And I have a feeling I'd inevitably get a player with his panties in a twist that I'm mixing fantasy and sci-fi

Players wouldn't be the gods

Been written before, a few times.

The question becomes, where do players fit in? Why does this elaborate backstage reality make a difference to the PC's? How would they even interact with these gods? If they can't then why do the gods matter?

I may have the free time to write an rpg soon, but I want to do something unusual that hasn't been done so much it's a cliche (grimdark future, fantasy, bitchy supernaturals, etc). But I don't want it to be so unusual that no one plays it because there's no demand for it. Therefore I am asking: what do you think hasn;t been done that there's a demand for? Or at least hasn't been done well that there might be demand for.

Any tips for role-playing as a girl when you're a boy irl? How do I not play either a man with tits or a sexiest caricature?
39 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
Assuming this is not a bait thread:
I've never tried it so I can't offer any tips, I will say though that whatever you do try not to annoy your DM or fellow players.
>>
Instead of specifically trying to think of gendered traits, think of how being a girl woulda changed your character growing up in the setting. For example, if you're playing a female fighter in a setting where most fighters are men, think of what attitude she'd develop about that. Like, maybe they are overly aggressive to prove themselves. Or maybe they are more meek and reluctant to show off their talent in front of people. Then just mark that as a character trait like any other and stick to it.

In Shadowrun my players were hired by interests trying to stop Aztlan from taking over a chunk of northern Amazonia. The players were supposed to work in conjunction with a bunch of mercs fighting for Amazonia, with the player team doing wetwork, espionage and sabotage. Unfortunately they derped two missions hard (one ambush, and one base infiltration), mistakenly leaving enough of a trail for Aztlan spec-ops to track them. When they made a break for it, one was killed and the rest barely got out alive. The players enjoyed the whole thing but it ended in abject failure, with the Aztlan military wiping out the mercs and massacring thousands of people.

They got blasted to bits by Tiamat in a pocket dimension that had made to imprison her, essentially.

I planned it, though, and let them think session was over for about 5 minutes before I deus ex machina'd them for the actual fight

Yep. My players let themselves get carted off to an alien prison cell when they were the only hope to stop the invasion force from killing everyone they knew.

Suppose you're DMing a game, and you just had a bunch of NPC thugs demand some money from the PCs. They're way weaker than the characters they're trying to extort, and if the PCs want, they can kill these guys with little effort.

Would you give them more XP (or equivalent if you're playing a system without it) for

A) Killing all the thugs for their presumption

B) Intimidating them into scurrying off?

>>
Both approaches solve the problem, same exp

Bonus if they roleplay either well

I don't do EXP, I level everyone up at appropriate plot points.

While Rene and (most of) her crew gets used to the terribly cold mountains of Tordo and head for its nameless capital, Cicero's investigative mind is put on looking over what they've learned so far about who could've stolen the last pages. To him, he points out to Rene, it's quite clear that whoever did this is someone seemingly-loyal to the Empire. No one else could've gotten INTO Xerxes' room, let alone defiled his personal artifacts without anyone learning of their existence. But who could've done such a thing..?

Dyrus and Laurise, meanwhile, help their mother wrap up the battle of the mountain pass, driving away the remaining Imperials and doing a headcount of those who have been lost. Biff and Byron are nowhere to be found, either miraculously among the living or identifiable among the dead, leading some to hold out hope, but others to doubt immensely. Regardless, they can't exactly afford to spend time searching for the Noban knights, and Hauteclere, having recently declared herself queen, steers her men forward to claim her new home, soon-to-be-formerly known as the Gerxel capital.

Samson and his pals ride towards the island hideout of Oswald Dory, Adelais pointing out that, even if weather and any number of things that could've gone wrong on their way to contact her father went wrong, they absolutely SHOULD have been back by now if they're not dead. And if they are dead, then it goes without saying that something very, very wrong has happened. None the wiser are they to just how late to the party they will be, but even still, none of them are terribly optimistic about the chances of finding a pretty sight on the isle of Oswald's hideout.

You are now Dyrus, and you must say, you're already feeling your new position in life immensely! Your mother is a historic revolutionary turned queen, making you and your sister royalty as well.

The nature of Felix's heritage causes more than a bit of a stir, even catching his aunt Fortune off guard. Still, though, knowing that the Empire will be after him from now on, she swears that... Well, that that won't happen. Felix, to his credit, shows no interest in being an evil emperor or anything of the sort.

You're still more than a little upset about the demise of that kindly Imperial healer at your own hands, but what Via said rings true in your heart. Even in this very battle, he's certain there were Imperial agents he would never know the names or stories of who could have been veritable saints, and you've been chugging through by telling yourself it's selfish only to mourn the one you knew.

As you ride towards the capital, your mother and Via help you and your sister grasp the theory behind staff usage, saying that it's something you MUST be proficient in as future leaders.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQtiSjGb74U

Learning this... Honestly, it helps you feel like you've overcome the rut you recently found yourself stuck in, like you're ready to start growing and getting stronger again now that you and your sister have the future of Teege on your backs!

>A. Spend time with someone (specify)
>B. Skip to the next relevant event

Don't create NPCs that are your pet characters that will hog the spotlight. These are called DMPCs and they generally suck. Let the PCs hog the limelight.
>>
Don't do that shit where you overthink your story because you've read people's accounts of shitty, boring, uninspired, bland sessions. If you want to deliver a cliched story straight up from an 80s dungeon crawler and make your world derivative, do so. The players will form the tone of the story themselves and will play out those segments themselves. So steal.

If you really want to literally run A New Hope in a fantasy setting for your guys, do so. Maybe they will play it straight. Maybe they will murderhobo the whole thing and Leia will end up sold to slavery while they take over Han's ship and decide that they now want to become mercenary smugglers themselves. Maybe they will fuck up and will have to concede Yavin and you'll have to change the story up. You don't have to be ashamed that your session looks like it was written by Christopher Paolini. It's okay.

If someone told me that when I was starting out, I wouldn't have fucked up so much and I wouldn't have had anxiety about that.
>>
Don't be afraid to kill your players off. The game isn't meant to be about you raping the players' orifice, but you have to make them realize that the risks they take are very real.

One thing that tabletop does that computer RPGs - a common avenue to tabletop - often neglect is that killing is not the #1 way of dealing with encounters and that even the precious XP points can be gotten through other ways. Encourage them to sneak around powerful enemies and negotiate with people.

Of course, if your group wants to mostly be in it for the action and want high kill counts, make sure to provide it for them and you might want to fudge some rolls (in secret, that's what the DM screen is for) if it's dramatically appropriate - nobody likes to die on the campaign's first session because of a dire rat's lucky crit, and making a new character so soon again is just busywork nobody needs.

But overall if someone fucks up they will die. And that can be a nice plot hook for a future session to get that player ressurected.

I'm GMing for an extremely inexperienced player in a few days. The campaign will be composed of myself, the new player, and a mutual friend, for the purpose of easing him into TTRPGs. I'm looking for what system to start him out on. He's a fan of high fantasy and political intrigue, and pointed out Dragon Age and A Song of Ice and Fire as examples. I was considering doing a generic D&D/Pathfinder campaign but he balked at the magic system, so I'm looking for something that's a bit looser with its magic system that would be nice for inexperienced players.

Any advice?
