Looking at it now I can definitely say i am not interested. A model has 8 different stats+special rules, and weapons have 7+special rules on top of that.

Its depressing to see so many of these games come out designed to be used with whatever as people search for alternatives for 40k or whatever, and end up falling in the same game design traps of 40k.

I'll pass.

Recently started a campaign with someone who has never played d&d before as the dm (he wouldn't take no for an answer and he's pretty imaginative so we figured what's the worst that could happen) the setting he came up with, albeit pretty standard, has had some pretty cool encounters and puzzles so far with some good workarounds to challenges built in. The only problem is that he didn't understand how levels and AC work so combat is utterly impossible since the entire party is level one and can't do shit to any of the monsters we've encountered meaning were forced to run or talk our way out of everything or be killed in a single blow. Anyone else have a similar story?

How would you do a setting where the entire known world is a dungeon, city of ember/gurren lagann style? I want to run a sort of mega dungeon setting where tales of the surface world are barely more than folklore to the inhabitants of the dungeon

The foundation of the ecosystem is chemosynthetic bacteria and other microbes feeding on thermal vents. From there you just travel up the food chain. It's also possible to just have wizards or other magical phenomena create light which enables photosynthesis.

Is anyone here familiar with the Amethyst setting? I'm particularly interested in reading it, and if I like it I fully want to buy it (I love collecting good RPG books)... but the book is $70. I can't quite justify spending that on it yet.

First, a link, because my below description isn't actually all that great: http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/176948/Amethyst-Quintessence-5E

So. Amethyst, for those of you who aren't aware of it: In our world, way back in the past, elves and stuff lived. They were essentially spawned from the magic of chaos, which was fighting order at the time. At some point, chaos died/was banished and order was trapped underground or something. Eventually, history happened: humans evolved, civilization happened, and finally the modern day was reached.

Of course, the forces of chaos and order returned. With them came the return of magic, magical beings, dragons, elves, whatever. Most of human civilization was destroyed, but some pockets around the world remain, mostly in city-state form.

There are a bunch of classes/archetypes/backgrounds/spells/whatever to fit into this mix of technology and magic. As I understand it, there are things like technical wizards and rogue programmers. Stuff like that. I'm not actually sure what, though, because I only read the preview.

Anyone else aware of this? I've done a horrid job of describing the setting, but I'm very interested in it.

So it's Shadowrun without the Cyberpunk aspect I'm taking it?
>>
>>47781962
Hm. Sort of. I'm disappointed to say I'd never actually thought of it like that.

Amethyst seems to me like it's more of a typical fantasy setting thrown on top of our modern world (because by 'modern day' in the setting, our world is basically completely replaced by fantasy stuff). Shadowrun claims to be that, but really it isn't.
>>
>>47781901
Some other relevant info, for those interested:

Amethyst was originally a 3.5 (or 3, not sure) setting. It was recreated for Pathfinder, and again for Savage Worlds and D&D 4e. Overall the various versions got pretty solid reviews, though I haven't seen any info on the 5e version aside from what's on the DTRPG page.

Hey /tg/, this might not be exactly /tg/ related, I'll preface this with saying I've never exactly gotten into tabletop RPGs or Wargaming (despite an interest) so maybe this won't exactly resonate with everyone.

Does anyone else have a problem maintaining a main class? Or at least deciding on one? I guess what I traditionally enjoy in characters throughout fantasy films/games/boardgames are skirmishers and raiders (outside of Total War games where I find them a waste of a slot ). Even when it extends to Magic there isn't that one color that stands out as enjoyable, and even if it stands out as enjoyable it doesn't have that flavor or lore that makes it really fun to use. The main thing I'm really wondering is how do you get past these things and really pick up something you end up sticking with? I'm just getting constantly frustrated by my indecision and can't seem to find a class for most RPG/MMOs.

Also thinly veiled request for cool Skirmisher/Raider-type art.

>how do you get past these things and really pick up something you end up sticking with
Simple: you don't. Playing one kind of character all the time is boring as paste. Variety is the spice of life, and specialization is for insects.

I've been playing TRPGs for 10 years, and I've never used the same character build twice.
>>
>>47780856
This. It's the people who play the same character every single time that get annoying.

Though you do need to be able to stick with a character for a full campaign. Or at least until it dies, so you might find that you prefer a high lethality game.

What the fuck? Should I just drop this guy? He said he didn't want an adventure with a lot of combat, so we usually just do things with dialogue, but he's still fucking bored and never says anything during sessions. The only time he speaks is when I have an NPC say something to him. Other than that he just walks around and follows the other PC.

Without knowing what your campaign is like, I couldn't say.

If you're, you know, an adult with half-decent social skills then you could just ask him "what can I add that would interest you, because you seem a bit bored and I don't want anyone to be bored"
>>
>>47778468
Clearly you must make the Guards a recurring pair of NPCs that the group runs into, as clearly there has been a breakdown in communication. Clearly he expected to see the impact the group had on the two, and took your half-assed answer is an affirmation that it would happen. And now, he is no long invested because his immersion is 'broken'. Maybe have those guards be part of a band of bandits and have the fight be averted because the ex-guards remembered the group and they try to negotiate their way out of being killed, or maybe have them be guards at the next town and have them do the 'oh no, not you guys again.' reaction.

You can save him anon, so do it!

I asked him and he said "It's fine, I'm not bored." so I asked him if he was interested at all and he said "on a scale from negative 10 to positive 10, I go between a -1 and a 1." This gives me a pretty good idea of what I should do, but I don't want to just quit after 15 or so sessions.
The campaign is basically them trying to start a cult and become barbarian kings, but they keep getting sidetracked and doing other stupid shit that has nothing to do with that.

>>47778591
Hm... I suppose I could do that. They're going to go to a town close to the guards town soon, I could try to reel him back in there.
Maybe they could join his cult or some shit.
Thank you for the idea, I was almost ready to give up.

The "long version" of Darren's story is actually fairly simple to shorten. Though Dyrus and Laurise's mother had been betrothed since birth to his son, the late Dyrus Sr., and he made a point of being a large part of his future daughter-in-law's life, the pair... Wasn't particularly close in childhood, the teenage Hauteclere particularly preferring to sneak away into nearby cities and disguise her nobility. This changed rather drastically when she wound up impregnated by one of these trips.

Though she never shared the finer details of her conception with anyone, she looked up to her future father-in-law for advice. Having dutifully served the Imperial army according to tradition since the THEN-current Emperor was a princeling, he insisted that this daughter would spell scandal and ruin for both of their houses, that the best thing for everybody would be to leave her behind, on top of pushing her to get closer to his son. Among many of his past actions, he came to regret this immensely upon the passing of his son. Speaking of him, though, when Dyrus Sr. learned of what happened, he was the one who good-naturedly informed Rene's sentimental adoptive father of this.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyV81QawP2g

But enough of the family drama of nobles you've barely met once or twice, and aren't even there to learn about! You're Samson, and you have your own familial issues to be griping about! The people holding your father hostage haven't been heard from in some time, and if something happened to them, you're... Well, quite frankly, you're going to be pissed. You suppose it would be a convenient out for your coerced alliance with the Dories, but it would also mean your fight with the Empire is far from over.

You and Millicent look out to the sea as you sail, trying your best to take in the vastness and majesty of the open water instead of the grim circumstances that have kept you in the islands for so much time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1SJNhIXIq8

"I... Did always dream about going beyond the shores sometime," Millicent says, laughing slightly sadly. "I guess there wasn't any way I would've ended up out here..."

"What makes you say that?" You ask "You could've just... Gone. I bet you even coulda talked me into getting off my butt to see the world if it meant hanging around you more."

"We can't all afford to just drop everything and travel, Sam," Millicent says. "It was already pushing it just learning how to dance like I did. If Norman wasn't so in love with hunting, I don't think I even could've taken time to do that. And, uh, even then, just in case that fell through, if Norman was injured or one of our parents got really sick, that's why I learned..." She looks away, still as embarrassed as ever with the odd thievery-related talents of hers that were integral in the uprising in Fort Dalshin. "I was prepared to keep us fed however I had to, anyway."

"That's not why you befriended Raleigh and I, is it?" You ask, intending it as a joke but immediately realizing that it's kinda mean-spirited once it leaves your mouth.

"No, of course not!" Millie answers, obviously slightly offended. "I can't believe you'd even imply that."

"Sorry, sorry," you say, hanging your head low. "That wasn't very funny."

Millie sighs, obviously forgiving your slight rather quickly, taking on an amused tone as she gets in retaliating jabs of her own. "The hero of the Southern Islands and Holmstead resistance, maker and writer of history, is still completely incapable of keeping his foot out of his mouth."

I went in with a group who all thought it looked good, but ultimately we found it too simplistic and progression unsatisfying, having come from DnD 3.5e. In the pursuit of trying to streamline the game, a lot of the mechanical complexity we found engaging was lost.
>>
Like a peanut butter and fluff sandwich, only you fucked up and got extra smooth and creamy peanut butter so now its just overly sweet with no real crunch or substance. Seems like a nice departure from PB&J but ultimately doesn't add too much and you get sick of it pretty fast.
>>
>>47777643
I only experienced character creation and the start of an adventure.

My impression was that it was trying to integrate elements of d20 and FATE, to the detriment of both.

Character creation was incredibly unsatisfying. After picking one of 3 classes you chose a couple of aspect-y/feat-y things from a finite list that used a largely meaningless adjective and gave some kind of limited mechanical bonus. I also think there were three or so attributes. I think they were randomly rolled.

If I was in love with the setting I'd try running it with something else.
