What causes groups to play what I call "DM chicken?"

You know, you describe something as explicitly dangerous or unworkable, and then the players seem to go out of their way to try it, even when there's no clear upshot to be gained, like provoking a powerful NPC.

As far as I can tell, it seems created out of an expectation that you, the DM, won't actually cause the consequences to happen to them, that you're bluffing. Is this on the ball?

And how can you curb these tendencies? The obvious, of letting them suffer the consequences of their foolishness, hasn't really worked out for me, usually just getting complaints that I make things too hard. Can anything be done but pack up and move on?

I find that the thing that works best is bringing the hammer down HARD. I found that every time I went easy on my players for doing something stupid, they would just up the ante the next time.

Spending 30 minutes rolling up a new character is enough of a pain in the ass that its a disincentive to doing stupid shit.
>>
Don't tell them how dangerous something is and they won't see it as a challenge.
>>
>>47760207
Of course, dropping the hammer down on somebody for something stupid just makes you look like an ass.

I've had friends who do that, they get tired of all the baiting players do and just say, "Lightning stikes and you die."

In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium there is only war. Imperium of Man, once strong and proud, now is slowly crumbling, whole regions of space are lost to the horrors that lurk in the darkness of the void. Sector Deus is just one of the thousands of Imperial provinces that form the front line in the war to defend Humanity itself. Corruption from within and aggression from without threaten it. But the Emperor sends us hope. High Lords of Terra commissioned a Chapter of Adeptus Astartes, finest warriors Humanity has ever seen, to defend this region of space. They are the last line of defence that hold Age of Ruin at bay. They are the Ghosts of Retribution and this is their tale.

Okay, here are some background stuff, I want to have done: thoughts anyone?

-Investigate every and all connections between the GoR, including serfs, and the honor guard of Ursus, I am searching for friends etc.

-Have Targos screen people, including chapter serfs for being spies (Kest Ursus etc.), if he does not do so already

- Lord Admiral Hagen should have a list of combat ships that were damaged/could have defected to the triachy for an initial guess of their strength. Also more up to date reports, if available. Furthermore the number of civilian ships, especially large transports and shipyards in the area are of great interest for planning an eventual invasion of the triachy.

Lastly I want to confirm, whether the important people are informed of threats we identified, like the genestealers of san larion.
- Use our spy to identify Ursus assets/holdings
>>

Chapter has no ongoing open conflict operations. You've just retrieved Belisarian heirs right from under Sector Governor's nose. At the moment you are on the Aspera Dominus, course is set for your homeworld - Mormark.
>>47760019
Which one of these tasks do you identify as the main priority? I see three intentions:

1) Chapter counter-intelligence

2) Preparations for the invasion of Styrian Triarchy

3) Contra-Ursus intelligence

Okay, I really want to do Darkest Dungeon RPG now. Distant and isolated city-state; dark and corrupted forests around; warrens, ruins and coves teeming with darker things. I've got image in my head, have ideas and storyhooks. All I need is the right system for this work. My requirement on system are those:
- should not be setting-specific.
- because fighting is going to be main pastime, combat system should be detailed and present players with a good number of tactical and strategic choices. It also should be fast and deadly, with mistakes ending up in gruesome injury or death.
- rules for fear, horror, hunger and madness slowly creeping on players. Or quickly, if they stumble upon nameless horror.
- resource management should be a thing and should be handled with ease. Economics should also be included - I have no desire to write all prices by myself.
- magic and healing should be accessible yet rare; system should run on assumption that characters can heal themselves after each fight and that every character should have X magic items by level Y.
Can /tg/ help find me the perfect system for this one?

Some light rules should also be presented.
>>

LOTFP, free art-less rule book on their site. a B/X retroclone with a horror bent and some modern touches (ascending AC etc)

combat isn't all that detailed but it is deadly.

no rules for fear or insanity to my recollection though

>no rules for fear or insanity to my recollection though
That's kind of requirement. I need them and I want system with them; without the need to homerule them in.

What are some good plot hooks involving Golems?

>The golem is a lecherous pervert, and wants to fuck the goblin princess, who is herself interested in the applications of stone penises.. You must save her virtue so she can be married off to the neighboring tribe and not create an incident, while your charge is quite unwilling to have your "protection".
>>
>>47758890
Golem mechas made by gnomes threaten the power balance of the region. Your job is to acquire as many maces of smiting and anti-construct spells as you can to help fight the rising tide of diminutive world conquerors.
>>
>>47758890

>A golem's master dies and he goes rogue, recalling all of the Master's fleeting wishes and curses. The first of which is to obtain the sacred gem of Phawn which ends in a number of dead guards and a traumatized little girl that was the sole survivor and witness to the incident. It is not apparent that this is the work of a golem at first and must be coaxed out of the girl over a number of days. During this time the golem continues to fulfill the petty, and sometimes odd, fleeting wishes of his dead master.

Which is the superior resolution method, /tg/?

Neither really. It depends what you want from the dice, which is more a matter of theme and play style.

Hey /tg/, dunno if you remember me, but I was looking for advice on how to deal with cowardly players a while back. If you need a refresher, here's some of the shenanigans they pulled previously.

>Running back to the dungeon entrance if one of the thieves fails a listen roll
>Everyone checking for traps all the time, despite insistence that it doesn't work like that
>Fleeing from any fight against ranged attackers.
>Going all the way back to town, which is an in-game week away from the dungeon, because one of their frontline fighters took minor damage and the cleric had to heal him.

I took some of your advice, and am now ex-DM for these idiots. I just up and quit. I'll tell you how it went down, but don't expect anything good or story worthy. I just need to vent.

>Before they set out, a messenger runs into town
>Proclaims that the local baron is deathly ill, and that the only thing that can cure him is a rare herb that conveniently grows in the dungeon.
>Anyone who can find it will be granted titles, land, and gold!
>Players just blatantly blow it off. They vocally don't care.
>Even try to justify it by saying that what they've been doing is easier
>And they haven't been doing much
>Whatever, it's fine, still have plan B, let them set out how they please
>They get to the dungeon and head inside
>Once they're sufficiently deep, a sudden cave-in traps them inside!
>And as cowardly as they are, I will give them credit that they never complain about DM fiat or railroading when shit like this happens.
>No, they just decide to clear it out themselves
>Despite very strong hints that there could be another exit if they'd just explore and be adventurers for once.

>Start a game
>Ask players to make their chars all at the same time, but you tell them to first pick a concept and write it down their sheets in 3 words.
>Now they must pass their sheets to the player at the right of them. Tell them this could be their new character, they should pick their nation, physical appearance, ager and gender, but no mechanics (except those given by race/nation as approriated).
>Ask then to pass sheets to their rights again.
>Now they must pick a class and distribute points, make the crunchy bits but no gear.
>Tell them to pass the sheet to the person right in front of them or something that breaks the 'to the right' order.
>This person buys the gear and also selects a background for the character. Names him/her.
>Pass sheets to the left this time.
>This person picks a goal.
>Players can pick between rotating right or left one more time, the character they end up holding is the one they will be playing.

Would you consider doing this if you had a group you deem decent or better, /tg/? I particulary like the challenge of brings concepts someone else made, fleshing them out and trying to make them mine, but I understand characters are a very personal thing too and you might end up with something you don't enjoy.

I like the idea of everyone writing a short concept and then passing those around, maybe writing 3 just so someone isn't stuck with something they hate.

Outside of that, I think you get too many hands in it and it'd end up messed up. Having the general background picked out for you is one thing, but having all the details essentially be decided by committee is offputting
>>
>>47758440
No, not really. It's one of those ideas that seem fun at first, but after a while will get me thinking "I don't like this and that" and make me want to kamikaze the character and create a new one.

It also doesn't help that my experience with premade characters was with a man that couldn't understand that a GM isn't a film director.
>>
It'd be fun for a one-shot. Some of my favorite gaming moments were times that a DM tagged me to play an NPC or "fill" a one-shot with a plot-heavy pre-made and it was up to me to make it work for an hour or two.

Beyond that, though, you're going to have a real lack of sticky. People will be trying to play character's they don't have much skin in with options they wouldn't have chosen with a personality designed by committee. At best they'll throw away the fluff they don't like and try to make something out of the crunch, at worst they'll just wander off.

Hey there /tg/ I'm bored so I started looking for real-world places that sound like they should be found in /tg/ related materials. Bonus points for cool backstory.

Here's a couple to get started:

Lichfield: name translates literally as "field of bodies/ the dead" legend has it that 1000 villagers were massacred here for reasons unknown

Isle of Wight: random island stuffed to the gills with high-level undead beasties, dungeons, loot and, bizzarley, a sailing competition
