What's the ideal rate of inflation XP should have when it comes to gain in levels? Are empty levels ever a good idea?
19 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
Empty levels are meaningless, since they defeat the purpose of having levels at all. It is paradoxical to have become better without actually becoming better.

You also don't want leveling to take more and more time (as they do in vidya) - just have the challenges in order to gain experience at all be harder.

The reason why there isn't a bunch of level 25 Fighters in the village guard isn't that they haven't trained - it's that they haven't got the guts to do the sort of deeds that would turn them into level 25s.

For a simple xp system, just have each level be achieved after, say, 10 challenges. If something the party does is too "low level", it just doesn't count. An easy challenge might count as 0.5 or 0.75, while a hard challenge counts as 1.5 or 2 regular challenges.

I've normally just them them levelled as appropriate but the player keep on insisting I give them XP ( I guess it's the 'joy' of having numbers go up, what can I say, skinner was right).

Assuming a rate of steady rate of gaining one level every 3 sessions, what short of scaling should I give them?

>Are empty levels ever a good idea?
No. Especially if only certain classes get empty levels whereas others don't. A fighter getting more HP and a +1 to his BAB is pretty lame compared to the Wizard or Cleric getting a new gamebreaking spell.

Basically what >>47740129 said.

Because some people like making fun, high adventure characters.
If you want to run a scary medieval whatever, put limits on what people can make instead of letting them do whatever they want.

Unknown Armies (3rd edition, specifically)

>Why is it good?
It's got one of the best sanity models in any rpg, with deep mechanical caused by each facet of the sanity guages.

>Why is it bad?
The rules are in an early alpha state so character creation is temporarily confusing as fuck.

>What is the worst thing you hate about it?

There are a few magic schools that have some rules to them that I want to aggressively edit until they work better.

WHFRP 2nd Edition

>Why is it good?

Super-fluid career system that ties directly into the RP, super-easy to understand rules and a god-tier setting. It's also very easy to integrate homebrew rules and mechanics.

>Why is it bad?

Characters die too quickly, so a lot of the epic "Hell Yeah!" factor is lost.

Combat is also fairly static in the early game when few characters have >1 attacks, dodge blow or powerful magic, so it usually turns into "I aim and attack" over and over again.

>What is the worst thing you hate about it?

FFG scrapped it for overcomplicated bollocks.

>What's the weirdest thing about it?

Players I've hosted seem overly-eager to invest their XP into the Consume Alcohol Skill.

Mate, there are tons of them. Go crack open the 40k rpg books and see just how many there are.
>>
>>47737875
And almost all of them are replacement limbs/organs/etc, a piece of common party equipment built into your body or some variation of mechadendrite.

Still, even if I did underestimate how many sources for bionics there were, does that mean we can't think up some cool ones?

>"We Are All Us." The Lunars teach cosmic unity as their central precept. They assert they have combined the best of mysticism, shamanism, theism, and wizardry into a single, coherent, tolerant whole and they will open your eyes, with a punch to the face if necessary. The goddess Sedenya, also known as Shepelkirt, is the Goddess of the Middle Air, reborn with the aid of the Seven Mothers to destroy the rebel Orlanth and unify all cultures and lands in the benevolent light of the Red Moon. Even those tainted by Chaos can be healed and turned into good Lunar citizens, for Chaos is not outside Glorantha but a part of it and it must be healed and made part of the whole. All things, even Chaos, serve the Red Goddess. This faith heads a growing Pelorian empire which brings change to all it touches, yet is a land of civilization and order and law. We are all us and you will be us too.

Are Lunars cultural marxists?

Being a Paladin is not about Law... not about Light... sometimes not even about Good. For Laws can sometimes be written by evil hands, the gifts of the Light can be twisted to obey those full of arrogance and malice, and even what is believed to be Good can be a mask for the corrupt to work their plots unseen.

It is about Justice, about protecting the weak, uplifting the downfallen, punishing the wicked. Justice above all - that is the code of the Paladin.

When you are a Paladin, you are the Shield for he who cannot defend himself, the Healer for he who is too broken to go on, and the Sword that strikes unerringly to slay the forces of evil.

To be a Paladin is to be Right. There is no pride, no arrogance in that statement. To Be a Paladin you are right, for you must not second-guess - because your choices are not made for yourself. You choose the harder choice because it will help someone, it will make a difference, rather than rid you of a problem.
When there is a law harming the innocent, you remove that law.
When there is a man abusing his position, you will undo his actions.
When there is a monster preying on the weak, you will destroy it.

To be a Paladin, there really is no choice you need to make, because you won't think, you will ALWAYS choose what is right, not what is easy.
Pray to the Light. Follow the law. Respect your fellow man, or whatever other lesser-than-these things you may do. All that matters is that you have faith in your actions. That they will one day make the world a better place.

But being a Paladin is also about the small things, not only the great ones.

You give comfort to the sick, even if you are too weak to lay on hands. You build bridges and mend fences, sometimes literally, and help in menial tasks without complaint nor seeking of reward. You give counsel where it is welcome, and where that counsel is unwelcome you sacrifice your own dignity to soften others' hearts.

And above all, only when you discover there is no other option, nothing left of the person you're trying to save but a shell of a man hiding a monster, do you call forth that famous righteous fury and kick him so hard his body falls apart in two halves.

A paladin is a symbol of what he fights for. Some fight for country, some for glory, some to protect the innocent, some for vengeance and so on; what they have in common is their willingness to sacrifice of themselves for their cause. This is what separates a Paladin from other men: that in the same situation where a normal soldier would break, run and hide - the cause be damned - he will fight and die on his feet for what he believes in. Paladins are about ideals, not profit; struggle, not ease; truth, not politics. They are neither leaders nor followers because they walk their own path.

A Paladin is the last full measure of devotion a man can give to his purpose in life.

What makes a paladin so powerful is very plainly stated. Faith. Not in any gods, not in the laws of man. No these are empty meanings of the word. Faith that what the paladin does will always be just, will always be righteous, that he will put the needs of others before the needs of himself. That when surrounded by doubt and betrayal, he stands shining, the one last thing you can trust in the world.
>>
>>47736761
While it seems the word is ending around you, and all hope is lost, he is still there. He will help you, he will save you from the deep dark of evil; be it from the hearts of men or the mouths of devils. He is there so you will not give up. That you will stand tall against injustice. from him you gain hope, courage, and determination.

He is standing bold in his faith... so that you will not lose faith.

To be a Paladin... is to be a Hero in the truest sense of the word.

Faith is the Paladin's cornerstone, for without faith - that soul-deep trusting in how things beyond your power will work out for the best without your influence - they have nothing.

Yea, their faith in what they do can get shaken, dragged through the mud and spit on, but they never give up. They press on, in spite of this, because at the end of the day they know what they do will make a better world because of it.

A true Paladin might have lost their path many times, but they never lose the faith. He might be lost and forget why he fights, when he feels nothing can be done... then they'll find a thing... a thing so horrid that they know something must be done, and then they will remember why they fight. Then it's time for the Paladin to pick up his sword and get back to work.

What's the best way to play a badass character without venturing into either the "edgy self insert Gary Stu" realm or the "so randumb ditzy secret badass" Jack Sparrow/Vash the Stampede realm?

Like someone who is obviously a badass but also someone you might also look down on? Most people who try to play un-respectable badasses just end up looking like a typical BBEG.

I think you're a lost cause op.
>>
The first step is not trying to be badass.

Badasery is like illumination, is a golden fish that you can not catch, but that will jump in you hand once you are ready.
>>
Yeah don't try to be badass, but if you're talking about a character that's very good at fighting and strong try and play up the disadvantages of spending your life mostly just learning how to murder. Have the badass loner actually have their social or intellectual ineptitude be a burden. Also realistically they would have a few scars and probably won't be crazy good-looking.
