currently working on a campaign setting with mindlfayers.
their domain is as always deep underground, but because of cosmic horror fuckery gravity wont behave.
so the intrance to their innermost sanctum is a giant gate with two bridges (top and bottom), going over a vertical ring shaped moat that is filled with an enormous gibbering mouther.
inside is the elder brain which floats inside a huge blob of levitating viscous fluid, with tendrils going out and connecting with the mindflayers gathered there, mindreading, brainwashing and commanding them for nefarious purposes.

as far as artifacts goes.
shit idunno a circlet that enhances psionic abillities.
jars with brains.
a mechanized cranium opener.
an ancient tablet made of a greenish stone engraved with the horrible visage of their tentacled faces that makes you insane for no reason.
arcane research - scrolls, wands, spellbooks, rods, stafs, etc.

maybe tell us about them abit.
since you mentioned ruins ill assume their either gone or somehow reduced to stone age tech.
