I used to do Hindu-type meditation, chanting Om and concentrating on it,not allowing any other thought in my head for around 20 minutes. Increased that duration to about an hour when I got good at it.

You should get a trainer, as my "tips" are going to be very generic and not at all useful for a subjective experience. Can't recommend any books since I was trained by my father. Try searching on the internet.
