My mom didn't hit my brother and I much, but she was really emotionally abusive a lot of the time. Her mom (my grandma) beat her with sticks and broke her nose twice in addition to much worse emotional abuse though, so I guess I should be happy she was a lot better than that.

Got raped when I was 8 by two older girls as well, but that was a one time thing.

There's multiple reasons. She has no life skills, a criminal record from drug use so she can't get a job, a drug addiction, and no other options. To her it was either suffer for the sake of her child or have the both of you die on the streets.
