I actually meditated seriously for a few years.

It's not a meme. My concentration and cognition improved significantly.

I used to do Hindu-type meditation, chanting Om and concentrating on it,not allowing any other thought in my head for around 20 minutes. Increased that duration to about an hour when I got good at it.

You should get a trainer, as my "tips" are going to be very generic and not at all useful for a subjective experience. Can't recommend any books since I was trained by my father. Try searching on the internet.

Stopped doing it around 6 years back.

Back when I practiced meditation I had my father who would force me to do it. When he transferred to another city, I lost the habit. I tried doing it last year but it's actually pretty difficult to do by yourself if you are not disciplined enough.
