Is the 5D Mk. III a worthy upgrade from the 5D Mk. II? Or are the changes so minimal that theirs no reason to make the switch? I use the camera for mainly video.

Nope, got a mk2, too, and sometimes i contemplate switching it for a GH4 or a mk3. But for the type of stuff I do it would make way more sense to invest in proper audio or renting locations instead. The only difference would be 4k or RAW 1080p but usually its not the image quality that makes or breaks amateur productions.
waste of money. stick with the 5Dii.
better off with an 80D at this point if you just want video since it has the new sensor. or blow your money on the 5Div when it comes out at the end of the month but itll only be marginally better. but what you have will be fine for a couple more years until 4K really starts to take off. then if canon cant get their shit together youll probably need to abandon ship.

gear thread, don't be a faggot
Why does /p/ rarely, if ever, discuss other people's photography? I mean, if I go on /lit/ there are people talking about the shit they write but there are still people talking about books they've read, on /mu/ there's people talking about music they've made but most still talk about music they've heard, etc.. But here on /p/ it's always either talking about gear or sharing your own photography, and even when you're talking about each other's photography all you ever talk about are the technical aspects of the photo most of the time. Never do I see people talking about their favorite photographers, exhibitions they've seen recently, etc. Why is /p/ the board with the most disregard for their art?

I'm subbing rn to this thread ;);))
Certainly not "high art" but I'm particularly fond of Tim Hetheringtons work from the early-mid 2000's, especially his Libera series.
He's definitely my favourite modern documentary photographer.
https://pro.magnumphotos.com/Catalogue/Tim-Hetherington.html

Fewer people are interested in photography as fine art compared to music or literature. The barrier to entry for photography is basically zero especially now that everyone has a camera in their pocket at all times, while buying an instrument and learning to play music or sitting down to write a book or a poem generally takes more work. Photography gear is pretty much an entirely separate hobby unto itself and a lot of people seem more interested in talking about cameras than about anything else.
So /p/ reflects most other photography forums on the internet. Most of the user base are just entering the hobby or are not highly skilled in it, and are more concerned with learning the technical aspects and the gear because that's simple and more objective than creating and/or judging the actual content of photographs. It seems to perpetuate itself, because new people come to the board and see the majority of the discussion focuses on the gear and on the technical mastery, so that's what they latch on to and start to focus on. Eventually it becomes so focused on it that everyone convinces themselves that sharpness and high ISOs and sensor sizes are the central crucial issues to be discussed on /p/, and the long extended discussions on gear make people very emotionally attached to their own cameras so they start proclaiming the superiority of their gear over everyone else's and arguing with everyone who doubts their choice of gear.
So I'm looking towards getting a D5500 as my first camera to start filming interviews peoples about their cars, I've already tried a T4i, T6i, a 70D and a D5300 and now I want to know what you guys would recommend. Most of the filming is on the road (day and night)
>>2899377
dont go d5000 series. I own a d5300 mostly for stills, tried to do some filming for live music in low light situations, absolute toaster. depending on your budget, i recommend considering a panasonic gh4 + a decent shotgun mic. or, you know, just pick up whatever canon the next guy here says to get.

What is this? 2010?
>>2899377
For video you either want a Canon 70D, Sony A7 II or A7s II or a Panasonic GH4
Nikon can't into video.
Hey /p/ I've got a photoshoot in a few days with an attractive grill. Please give me tips on how to not drop my spaghetti.
Also lets share some portrait examples we like ourselves

Any words of advice on getting this kind of metallic b/w look?
I see it as just needing a strong directional light but not quite able to get curves thatll make skin still have contrast and look nice while getting silver like that

>Any words of advice on getting this kind of metallic b/w look?
Shoot photos with metallic stuff in them.
>>2899338
well im not talking about the car. I think it still works hella cool with just looking at the girl. Her skin is silver and its weird because you look at the actual model and shes pale. The shadows are black but clearly lifted or with fill.. It just seems like a grading thing but i dunno
This has probably already been mentioned on /p/ - but for those who are unaware and enjoy some free filters:
The NIK Filter collection is now entirely free - Looks like Google bought them out in March:
https://www.google.com/nikcollection/
I've been using the collection for years already - and it's worth the download if just for the RAW Pre Sharpener alone.
The rest of the set is great too - good for experimenting. So yeah, party on.

This was shot with a Canon T6 18-55 mm, is this a nice pic /p/?
>>2898650
Poor composition, drab and washed out colors, 90% of subject is out of focus and the few bits that aren't are over-sharpened, and finally f/3.5 @ 1/1250th - literally why?
Practically everything you could have done wrong here, short of also using a really high ISO.
Looks like a nice place, I would recommend using a tripod to lock off the composition and wait for some nice light to roll by. I'd get there and set up an hour before sunrise or set depending on which direction you're facing, and stay until an hour after. You can just leave the camera on the tripod on A mode with your settings set and simply click the shutter (preferably wirelessly or on self timer) each time you think there's good light in front of you. Good luck ~

wow thats s cool

>>2898330
that's INSANE. a packed bit-stream is prone to minor modification. OMG! how can this be? that's totally like if you have an encrypted stream it is enogh to change one bit and you can't decrypt it anymore. stunning.
and for data transfer unfortunately there is no error handling. a pity that there aren't protocols which assure bit-exact transportion. .. what? an average serial data transfer makes ca. 12 errors on 100 bits? .. omg, how does digital technology even work?

If it's especially for video, stay away from DSLR's. Sony and Panasonic are what it's at in that realm, son. You don't need a reflex.

Today I got contacted by a classmate who told me she likes my work and would like if I can shoot her and her friends senior pictures. They said they will pay me, which I'm only gonna charge them like 50 bucks if they like the images since I've never actually shot a portrait session other than my family and what not.
My reason for posting on here is I wanna make sure that I don't fuck this up. What should I research so I can be the best with them. Thanks!
I would also like to say that this will be my first actual gig for anyone other than my family. I don't know what I should expect and am very nervous but confident in my skills.
