Today I just got back into shooting people after a few months. Just blazed and now editing some pictures. Going to post while I edit. This will be a slow one guys..

She's pretty. Post more of her.
Pocket cameras of the past had the exact same "sensor" as their contemporary top of the line SLRs: 35mm film. Pocket cameras of today have shitty sensors compared to DSLRs. Thoughts on this.
It took a long, long time for pocketable 35mm cameras to become good. It will take less time for pocketable full frame cameras to come to fruition, but you're placing unreasonable demands given the newness of the technology.
Having said that, the RX1r2 comes pretty damn close to being pocketable, and would be if they didn't worry about ergonomic factors like having a lens barrel large enough to comfortably focus with, etc.
The Ricoh GR is absolutely pocketable and has a terrific aps-c sensor that blows most 35mm out of the water, so there's that.
35mm SLRs were not 'top of the line.' Some were made to very high quality, and rather expensively so. This however was mostly either for the purpose of personal luxury, or for photojournalists who preferred 35mm for the high shot-to-shot speed and number of shots per roll. Top of the line SLRs were typically 6x6 or 6x7 format, quadrupling the potential resolution compared to 35mm film.
35mm compacts also had very bad lenses most of the time - the few that had acceptably sharp lenses are cult classics which are very overpriced today due to popularity.
I can tell that this is going to become a meme if someone isn't clear right now why you can't design digital cameras with current sensor technology and the kinds of lenses that were put in these cameras.
Effectively, unlike film, which you can treat as "flat", digital has something called wells which the light has to get into.
These lens designs have light coming in at such a grazing angle in the corners that it actually causes the image to smear and you get a phenomenon known as colour vignetting where the corners go super purple or green.
Anyone that's used the Sigma DP2 Merrill raw to dng converter (SPP digitally fixes the problem before you notice it), or used the wide angle compact leica M or Contax G lenses on mirorless cameras will have seen this first hand.
Dont mind me, I'm just your current year Pulitzers material.

Old one finally hit the autosage after 90-something days, in that time I learned how to walk, came back to FL, got all my shit stolen because I was stupid, scored a D7000 outfit that I have been building over the last couple of weeks, went back on the road for 25,000 miles and came back >>2840526
Random bullshittery on the road, stopped in our terminal in Springfield today to pick up my truck. Will definitely have some local stuff this week it will be a while before I actually drive off there's a waiting list on trucks apparently. I might sneak over to some of the caves in Missouri
Someone had requested more of that reflection shot in the previous thread so here's some more.

Underexposed, garbage framing.
General thread for camera bags.
Discuss best bags, post your own bag, help newbs decide what bag for which camera.
Still waiting for my Pacsafe Camsafe Z16 to arrive. Purchased it on the 29th of July and apparently the original bag was lost in transit. They said they sent another one but yeah, haven't heard much about it since.
That's my fault for trying save $150 of the original retail price though. There's a good chance I'll never get it :(
Might just cut my losses, charge back and get a lame ass Lowepro or Vanguard instead before I head off to Tokyo/Seoul soon.

I was shown this forum the other day by a friend of mine.
I'm a working photojournalist/ documentary photographer with a focus on social conflict, crisis, and war. I work primarily as a freelance, then selling my work to major magazines and newspapers, however I have worked for AFP in the past.
The world of photojournalism has changed a lot over the past few decades, but as someone who only started a few years ago, I'd be delighted to help others who are looking to break into such a career.
I've worked across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa covering famine, civil unrest, and war, among other issues.
I'll happily give all the advice I can!
***Unfortunately I will not be able to post my work or reveal my identity, as I would rather not be tied to a website like 4chan (only because until the other day, all I had ever heard of the site were vulgar descriptions)***
I will use the alias "Tripoli" for further reference
(Photo: Tim Hetherington, Liberia, 2003)
welcome, it's always nice to see professionals pop up on /p/ and try to give advice!
I'd like to ask about how you got into the world of photojournalism - as in did you have a degree, connections, and what kinds of work you did when you started out.
anything you'd find insightful about your work would be great!
>>2903645
How does one get into photojournalism / documentary photography in a very peaceful country where no real unrest or social upheaval happens? What do I photograph?
>>2903645
Thanks for posting here. What was your first conflict zone? Ever meet Hetherington?

I personally don't see what a shoulder rig could do for me. Either I want a stable movement, then I use a dolly/slider/jib/crane, or I want a hand-held style for following movs, pov etc., then I just take it in the hand.
Shoulder seems only to be useful if you have to hold the cam for longer periods while moving around and shaking is not a big issue ... aka documentaries.
So I just bought a lens for £250
I know that's nothing for some of you, but for me that's a lot

I'm gonna buy a glidecam at some point in the next week I've decided. I think a shoulder rig will be too bulky
I'm a photographer form the UK, currently in my first year of A Level Photography (I'm 18, just started late). As far as my class goes I'm way ahead, but that doesn't say much.
I've had a camera and been taking photos for about 10 months now, which isn't that long. I've had a few paid gigs but I've rejected quite a few knowing I don't have enough experience to be happy with the results (example being a couple weddings/family portraits).
I'm wanting to do pretty general stuff - local clubs and bars near me have regular photographers, and doing events, portraits and weddings on top of that would probably make a small living.
I'm gonna dump some photos and then my flickr for those interested. Mostly recent stuff, I'm always looking to improve although sometimes circumstances make it hard as hell (I've done a lot of stuff in pubs/bars without flash)

FUCK YOU
Hey /p/otatoes,
I'm traveling to the Seattle, Vancouver, and Alaska next week and wondering what lenses I should take with me. I need to find a balance between versatility and portability, since carrying all that stuff around sucks esp. considering the number of stops I'll be making.
I've got an X-Pro2 and most Fuji primes:
- 14 2.8
- 16 1.4 (WR)
- 23 1.4
- 27 2.8 pancake
- 35 2 (WR)
- 56 1.2
- 90 2 (WR)
along with the 16-55 f/2.8 and 55-200 zooms. I also have an X100S, which I have been neglecting in favor of the X70.
I'm planning on bringing the following:
- X-Pro2
- 16mm f/1.4
- 35mm f/2
- 56mm f/1.2
- 55-200 zoom
The 16 and 35 are WR, which might come in handy in Alaska (weather seems to be mild in Seattle), and this range seems to cover wide, normal, short-tele for portraits, and a longer zooming tele in case it's needed.
I'm wondering if, instead of the primes, I should bring the 16-55 2.8 since it's also WR, and save myself some space and time switching lenses at the expense of the increased aperture and detail of the primes. I'm thinking I'm willing to bring the extra lenses but two weeks of carrying them around may make me regret it.
What do y'all think? What would you bring with you for a similar trip?

There's the gear thread, and then there's the FGT thread (the film general).

What thoughts are there? Jason Lee is a well known photographer with his own ultra large format camera. He's also an avid supporter of film and helps young photographers out all the time.
He also owns his own somewhat-reputable skateboarding company and is the inventor of the 360 flip (fuck you, Rodney).
He's also a hilarious actor, and if you only know him for My Name is Earl, you're missing out.
All of this, thanks to the positive power of Scientology (tm).
