Hello /p/. I am new to photography, so I am asking for your advice.
I am looking forward to portraiture; I am planning to buy a digital camera with an objective, which lens's focal lenght is about 80 mm. I believe that this is good for taking portraits?
Any advice on photography overall or portraiture?
Thanks in advance.

I typically like to use 85 primes. But then again its subjective. All based on how you want to shape a person's face etc.
>>
>>2892460
Oh, okay.
Let's say that I use a prime 85 mm. What should be the optimal f-ratio? Something about f/5.6? I know it depends on different parameters, but let's also say that the shutter speed is 1/80. Does a f/5.6 aperture fit these parameters?
>>
>>2892461
Typically if you're shooting portraits then you're gonna need to separate your object in the foreground from the background, using depth of field. Most times, you should use a smaller f-stop number, such as f/1.8 to get the shallowest depth of field as well as a nice blur and bokeh going on in the background.

I recently started looking into photography and I'm learning someone through a friend who works in the industry. At this point, all I really have is just my smart phone which is a Galaxy Note 5. I always try to keep the lens clean as possible, and always take photos in the "pro" mode. Any good tips for a newbie? Books I should read?

smartphones don't allow room for artistic choice (without producing ugly crud) due to the extremely tiny sensor and extremely tiny fixed lens.
You can't switch between wide DoF area shots and creamy blurred background portraits.
You can't change focal length between wide angles and telephoto angles to affect the geometry of lines, faces, vehicles, etc. (A phone camera is usually only like 27mm or 29mm with no way to change it)

The phone essentially eliminates photographic technique, so everyone's phone photography is essentially identical. 'pro mode' is nothing more than a marketing gimmick, as it's missing all the actual choices for pro photography.

I use my S7 Edge at the moment as I am currently without a camera, it can produce some nice results, you're vertainly limited with using a small censored camera, but mainly by your own creativity.

>>2891304
Would disagree, a lot of flagship smartphones are shipping with excellent cameras considering the size of the phone, they are becoming more and more usable for some applications.

So I want to get into youtube and video. I am looking for a window mount for a galaxy s5 to record the videos, so I bought an adjustable window mount. However, it is horrible, it vibrates all over the place and won't make a good video. Please let me know if there is anything for me that would be more solid to mount my phone. I did try to tape it all around with electrical tape, to make it more rigid, but it was still shaking like crazy.

This is the item I bought:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/281154825441?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&var=580542411525&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Also, I bought this one, because I can set a face view, or a dash cam view. If needbe, I can buy 2 separate items so I could get the best video quality for dash and face views.

I enjoy taking night timelapses, and perseid shower will happen soon. Never tried to take this kind of photos, do you guys have any advices about that?

Like, are those objects bright? Bright as a stars, brighter? If i'll set ~10-15 sec exposures on higher iso (which is 1000-1600 in my crop) and fully open aperture, can i expect visible meteor smudges on a photo?

Please advise.

For meteors my go to settings are 25sec, f2.8 at ISO 1250/1600.

>can i expect visible meteor smudges on a photo?
Yes and no, it all depends on the meteorites. If they are small and fast your camera will have a hard time capturing them, and they'll show up extremely faint or not show up at all. If the meteorites are larger and slower than they will easily be visible even in a RAW frame.

Hi /p/,
