For me the original ones, as the one in your pic are perfectly fine. Your pic is from Iceland (pretty sure, eastern fjords) where there are no trees or such and messengers in old time used these to orientate through the vast lava- and snowfields, along the fjords and vasteness of the country. They are old and well made.

The faggy new made hipster cairns are ugly and annoying. Those can and should be destroyed. The Icelanders do so all the time with the ones made by tourists.

We don't hate them, we just love kicking them.

I'd recommend buying your insulation and water proofing separately. I have an eVent rain jacket and then can choose what to wear underneath depending on the forecast. Also can stay dry from the rain and dry from sweat if I get to hot.

That looks good. Something to consider about fleece is that it has to stay dry to stay effective. Also, it's not going to pack small and will take up a lot of space in your pack.

I have the opposite.

I work long 48 - 60 hour weeks and lately I especially feel the drive to get out. The things I used to enjoy.. TV, alcohol, video games, weed, going to bars with friends to try and pick up women, boxing... all of those things don't amuse me anymore. They seem hollow.

Ask yourself this Anon.

Why do you work so much? Is it to earn more money? What will you do with that money? Will you buy a new car to impress people? Will you buy new clothes to impress people? Will you buy alcohol? Will you treat yourself to a new video game?

Do those things make you happy? Are they worth the long hours of trading your life in exchange for a wage? Do they make you permanently happy or do you eventually desire something else?

We're taught by marketing and the general social attitude in the modern world that our happiness comes from things; that people will respect us more if we dress a certain way or have a fancy home or a fancy car to impress them. We're taught that respect is important; and that working all our lives for material possessions is right because those material possessions will make us happy.

How happy are you right now Anon?

Happiness comes from love. It comes from genuine human interaction with good people and simple activities; it comes from getting /out/ with friends or even alone, it comes from being content with what we have and realizing we have everything we need to be happy.

Get yourself /out/. Ask yourself how much of the shit you own was worth the price you paid for it; considering the price you paid wasn't money but actually portions of your life that you will never get back.

Good question OP. As you probably surmised, it is a lot of work trudging through snow for any significant distance for any extended period of time. Physical energy expenditure wise, I mean.
The increase in your energy expenditure is obviously proportional to snow depth and the condition of the snow as well as steepness, roughness of terrain, obviously. Is it fresh, light and fluffy snow? or is it hard and crusty? or deep and densely packed?
Some snow you can walk over the top of even when its deep. Most snow you're sinking in with almost every step and of course this makes more work.
Visibility is partly an issue, due to the need to maintain your sense of direction, to maintain your desired course. This takes, stopping when possible to view for landmarks, granted an actual constant blizzards affords near zero visibility.
So you must consider how are you directioning, if at all? following some sort of natural topographical contour definition on the landscape?
I would say you have to be using at least a compass, having beforehand laid out you general route and waypoints (including landmarks to keep you on the right track). Handheld GPS would be extremely helpful and would not only allow you to maintain maximum possible physical speed of travel, but ensure you won't get lost.
A word of warning, in extreme cold temperatures, your electronics do fail. even those that are "rated" to operate in sub-zero climates.

I have, at times, hiked all day through near blizzard conditions in the northern midwest. Watching for hazards in the ground, stopping to look around while trying to find a safe foot route, even if it's only for the next 15 meters or less, this all takes up a lot of time.

I'm going to give a ballpark estimate of say, 1 mph as a rough average. tios depends alot on how much gear you're carrying and what your purpose is. Are you on a backpacking trip with 40 pounds of backpacking gear?
Or did you just jump out of a plane with spec ops weapons?

30-06 if you really want that bear to not rape you. Bears have taken .308 and still charge without flinching. 45 for home as it has a lower chance of penetrating walls and hitting something you don't want to hit. Use hollow points. But with 9mm you get higher capacity and that's what I carry in public. 40 is useless.
