Man, i listened to you guys and i watched season 1 of alone and the first episode of season 2. It was awesome. However, it has inspired me. I would love to test myself and see how long i could last with a select amount of items, except i would bring a rifle and maybe even a pistol with me. I think it would be really neat researching the type of semi permanent structure to build that could fend off wind and rain but sustain heat, hunting game, setting traps for small game marine life, and nets for salmon cod rockfish etc. I would have to bring books with me though, a lot of them to keep my mind busy. I would do a lot of carving as well and I would make my shelter as good as possible always making improvements. I know this will attract a lot of hate but does anyone not feel the same? Just dropping off the globe for a bit, testing your limit, and finding yourself? I think the season 1 winner is an inspiration. i won't give a name or how long he survived but he did really well and won 500G doing it too! Anyways throw some thoughts at me, i think it would be a great way to find yourself, but would be extremely draining and difficult at times.

i always laugh when people say they'd need something to keep them busy as if hunting and checking your traps and checking your fishing nets and collecting firewood and improving your shelter isn't too much work already

So, I have been traveling a bit in my shit suv. Saying I am lonely would be an understatement. Now, I hate people, so the best possible option would be to get a doggy companion for my travels and trips.

I do not really care what kind of dog it is, probs not too big because there is not much suv room. But, how happy can a dog be in that situation? Moving around all the time and occasionally sleeping in a slightly cramped car?

I really do love dogs, and I am sure a companion would make me a little happier. But is it an okay thing to do? Take an animal from a shelter and have it live in a ford escape with me? Would be out most of the time, but still... I also sleep for like 10-12 hours everyday, can easily change that tho.

I am not sure.

Get a fucking job and an apartment or something, then get a dog.
>>
>>747812
Shelters won't adopt out a dog unless you can provide a home address.
>>
I would say as long as it isn't a large breed it should be fine. Stick to smaller breeds.

Also keep in mind while it will help with loneliness it will also help motivate you to be more active. Depression has a tendency to make people unmotivated and want to sleep a lot and with a dog you will have a reason to see to something else needs besides your own.

And finally while it may not be the ideal home setting for a small dog it's a damn sight better than sitting in a shelter awaiting it's fate.

Question to the UL folks, I need a lightweight shelter that can cope with high winds and stormy weather such. but I am 6'7" (202cm) plus I got a mid sized dog with me.
IS the MLD Duomid XL a good choice?

why UL?

Because 12+ days trek with no resupply points == lots of food to carry, so it'd be wise to bring the base weight down.

I really want to do the Pacific Northwest Trail next year. It's not as long as the PCT or AT, but it crosses over 4 mountain ranges and ends at the Pacific ocean. Something like 50 people through hike it each year.

Gotta get better at orienteering though, cause it's a newer trail and big sections of it are unmarked/unmaintained.

What is the best bang for buck /out/ waterbottle?
What do you guys use?
I was thinking of getting this klean kanteen, but idk.
>must be stainless steel
>wide mouthed preferable
>must be able to be tossed in a fire for water boilage
Also a cup to protect from heat when pulling out of the fire would be nice

>>
>>745074
You answered your own question. A stainless steel or aluminum bottle because it serves a double purpose. Just don't fall for a brand and get whatever is cheap, because you'll be throwing it into the fire at some point.

I wouldn't pay $70 for a water container btw. That's plain stupidity.
>>
>>745074

That's a big bottle, wouldn't you rather have two smaller ones?
>>
>>745074
The bottle that you have pictured is an insulated bottle and would be destroyed if you put it in the fire...

So /out/ recently I got asked a question

>So anon what are you good at

We were drunk so I sidestepped the question but I realized I have no talents besides doing well in school, drinking and video games.

I am 24 I don't want to waste any more of my youth. I've travelled some but it's expensive and hard to get a group. I go to raves and music festivals but that's just more drinking drugs and empty happiness.

I need a hobby, whether it be sports hiking, surfing w/e and I want something I can get good at.

Living in CA I am open to suggestions, I know this is an outdoorsy board but I'm also open to suggestions like "oh do piano" but yeah I just want a lot of ideas and fun things to do. I am poor but my parents are not and if I were to find something I am passionate about they would probably help me financially but they would not throw money at me to try a bunch of stupid shit out of no where.

Also I need more than "go camping"

I need advice I don't know shit about shit, I need instructions, I need places to go, cheap starting places and smart investments to make for it. My work schedule is also flexible. I was looking through the boards and I figured this was the best place to start.

Example, I do enjoy soccer but after college don't know where to even look to find people to play with because I'm retarded with figuring this kinda shit out.

>plan the trip

I don't even know what to plan, what season should I go during? What countreis? How do I find places to sleep and for that matter work like you said.

And how long should I go for? How much money should I have saved up?

I'm only asking because I'm an idiot on this crap, your post is helpful and thank you very much, I wouldn't have even known about working on farms, but I don't know where to find them.

I had a friend who would bartend but I do not have a license and don't know if it would be worth getting.
>>
>>743871
try

might be hard to imagine, but you do have the ideas and creativity to plan an awesome trip. Just need to get yourself excited and off your butt

pick a starting point and start researching from there. You might start out in the UK and somehow end up in finland a few hours later.

I am not sure where to find the seasonal farm work or just general farm hand. But it is cheaper than a hostel and you have a place to stay for a while.

explore

you will end up finding a lot of really interesting things that will all net together

start at wikipedia lol

Oo la la

I saw a thread a while ago here where people talked about what they usually prepare, pack, cook, eat when outside.

Let's share with our recipes, methods, etc...
198 posts and 29 images submitted.
>>
I usually tend to bring dehydrated food. Instant oatmeal, dried fruit, nutmix, chocolate, protein bars, canned meat and vegetables, rice, pasta.
>>
>>735521
Depends on season and location. I usually go on fishing trips so i never bring anything meat related - because fish.
Maybe some veggies like 1 potato 1 carrot 1 onion and a dehydrated chicken stock cube to make a soup or stew. Usually take whit me that what i can not easily acquire in the location. There are situations where i can get wild forest garlic that tastes like garlic but consists of leafs - but its very rare and needs to be left where it is so this specie wouldnt die out completly. Some ramen is always in my pack for just in case and i usually eat my reserves because you get hella hungry outside doin shit.
>>
>>735532
Continue.
I have us army canteen set with cup as my pot. Stainless steel cup for tea coffe. Frying pan.

I have 4 tent pegs to put my pot and shit on when cooking in fire (Alfie lessons). And i recently got gas burner so im pretty sufficient in different cooking methods.
So stews and soups mainly because fuck it stuck everything in pot add water do something else for some time come back warm healthy food from fresh veggies and fish or something.
Fried fish smoked fish grilled fish and so on.... Im a keen fisherman so i eat what i can get. And im very good at cooking them too.
