Tell me why hatchets aren't the most versatile tool, pro tip: you can't.

Hatchets aren't the most versatile tool

Oh wew look I just did!

And FYI a 'forest' axe (or hand and a half as they're called here) > hatchet in versatility.
>>

Another hatchet lover here, forest axes require 2 hands making it less versatile ;)

So I've got an intresting idea. I'll preface this by saying i've done some research and couldn't find any mention of it. But has anyone thought about using a pre-workout supplement during a hike or backpack? I would think to have one water bottle with one scoop of diluted C4 in it and another of fresh water. My thoughts are that it would keep you going for longer without tireing or resting. On the other side, would the extra sodium and need for water alongside it make the whole thing pointless? I'd love some feedback.

TL;DR do you hike with C4? is it effective?
21 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
>>754369
C4 can cause dehydration pretty quick, so you'd need to bring extra water, especially if it's hot.
I find that the kick doesn't last very long, so unless this is a really intensive hike over rough terrain, it won't help much with endurance. My experience comes mostly from drinking a whole scoop at once for sports and lifting, but taking occasional drinks from a diluted solution may help.
TL;DR I've taken C4, but not while hiking. It probs won't work anyway.
>>
I drink a big can of coconut water before I go. It was recommended to me for cramps, seems to work. I'd be interested in something also. Some days it seems like I can hike forever and sometimes not.
>>
>>754369
There's a reason that marathon runners don't do this. Pre-workout supplements are for shorter events, like doing 40 minutes of circuit training or a HIIT session. For longer events it's more important to keep your blood sugar and electrolytes up, as well as hydrating regularly.

Can I train a goat to carry my stuff while hiking? Is this feasible or am I fooling myself?
38 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
It is a thing that people do. You have to make sure the trail you are hiking allows pack animals. It can get very expensive when you factor in the cost of the animal, vet bills, and food. I would rather invest my money in good ultralight backpacking gear.
>>
>>754214
Alpacas are a far better choice. They also make better companions/pets.
>>
>>754214
Pack goats are a thing. The ranch I elk hunt on uses them when packing big base camps in. They are really good on narrow trails, better than horses and burros.

You can rent them from High Unita to see if you like them.

So what's the best way to have maps/navigation on a smartphone when out of cell service?

Will be for both hiking and off road motorbiking trips

Where do you get your maps?
Is .gpx the gold standard (for poor cunts)?
30 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
>>754053
I use the "geo tracker" app. I download .gpx routes from websites like "thewalkingenglishman" and use that when I'm out hiking. It doesn't require signal and instead works entirely off gps.

The only problem is battery life. I figure with a compass you could save some battery life and just use your GPS now and then to check you're on the right route.

Alternatively just buy a gps. They're purpose built and have better battery life.
>>
>>754053
.gpx is the golden standard yeah. being out of cell service shouldn't matter for gps apps as they contact satellites not the phone network.

Random but I am planning an expedition this summer -- none of it is really .gpx logged (yet) what I am thinking of is using OS (ordnance survey) and IGN (french equivalent) online mapping and exporting expanded route maps as PDF or something to access on a kindle for the battery life. Obviously this means navigating by hand but should save a lot of space and money vs paper maps.

I am planning on using a dedicated GPS plotter to export the route as .gpx once I am done.

Thoughts?

>>754070
if possible try killing the wifi/bluetooth and phone signal (without killing the GPS) -- will improve battery life somewhat, but they are all powered by the same module (the main processor) in a phone, so it will still be less efficient than a dedicated unit.
>>
>>754053
>best way
learn compass & map and do NOT rely on an electronic device that can fail, run out of charge, get wet and die, etc, etc etc.

Hey fags and fagettes

Anyone know of any noice spots near Aberdeen, Scotland? I'm planning a camping trip with some friends later this month and it will be our first time in this area. Wondered if anyone knows any little secret chill spots /out/ the countryside to camp. Preferably somewhere not much more than an hour away by bus, would be much appreciated.

Being in aberdeen you are right next to the cairngorms where ive done my fair share of solo camping and hill walking. Would be longer than an hour to get to these spots, but they are very chill and isolated.
However, it has been a very late winter and even I am having doubts about a 5 day 9 munro challenge on rannoch moor planned for a fortnights time.
Was just north of loch lomand last week and had to call it a day and come off the hill due to blizzard conditions.
I can give you locations but they would take about 2 hours to get there, not including the walk in.

Yea i'm thinkin Cairngorms for sure if we don't find any closer, winter has been late but we're not planning on doing much walking once we're there besides to/from site, mostly smokin. If you know some good spots there, would be great thanks mate, are the cairngorms easy to get lost in? We probably wouldn't be looking to go somewhere too far off the path because we're all pretty much plebs atm as far as /out/ is concerned but somewhere secluded and remote for sure. Hope you're able to go thru with your challenge man.

if you want to scare them off/annoy them use your red ryder. if you want them dead get a Gamo break action pellet rifle and some decent pellets. Also shot placement, try for the head/neck/chest, sometimes a wing shot will deflect or just wound.

I had that in NZ. Good "rifle". It vibrates in an unusual manner after each shot. The stock scope is dog shit. 8/10 would buy again.

Something that easily starts fires or a machete.

Also, I wouldn't go to Leishmaniasis sandfly territory, or other places with nasty diseases you're definitely going to catch. Not worth it.

That's how it is in VA at least. Look into the WMA's for your state too! Have fun!

In Essen und Umgebung gibt es einige Wälder und Felder. Für diesen Sommer ist min ein Querfeldeincamping geplant. 24-48 out. Irgendwo hin fahren, Querfeldein laufen und da campen

Schwabe hier...

The American Geode team visited abandoned ghost town Centralia, PA to explore this old coal town that had been abandoned, demolished and condemned in the 1990s due to an underground coal mine fire raging since the early 1960s.

This might sound like a dumb one, but:

If a National Forest says I can only camp there for 14 days, does the 14 day limit "reset" if I move to another campground in the same National Forest?
136 posts and 22 images submitted.
>>
>>738921
Rules are really more like guidelines.
But in any case AFAIK yes, the 14 day limit is for a single stationary camp. Mostly to keep people from setting up shanties and just living there. If you break camp and go somewhere else it resets.
>>
>>738921
Yeah, you have to move like a mile and you can camp again
