I'm looking for a good backpack for camping. Not over night hiking trips, I have one for specifically that but I'm looking for one to use on general camping trips. Not too big with the solid frames like overnight packs have. But not small as I do carry quite a bit of equipment including a bladder for water. What packs do you recommend /out/?
What capacity do you want? I have an osprey daylight that's awesome for carrying water, jacket, some food, and emergency supplies.
I also have an ilbe assault pack that works well when I need a little more gear. Both were bought for $40 and have held up to years of consistent use.

I think this one looks ok.

Im thinknig about getting it for a "3-day pack" sort of stuff
this one looks good too (for a medium sized pack)

>Not over night hiking trips
How are you going to get to that camping area? if the answer is by car, just get a duffle. Can't see why would you want a backpack if you are not hiking.
So let's say I want to sleep in my car, or car camp and set up at a park (which requires a fee in my surroundings) so I don't have to commute back and forth to school when I have a night class + a morning class the next day.
Where is it legal to park and sleep for the night?
If a park has a camping fee but free parking does that mean it's OK to at least sleep in my car?
I was thinking its legal in more places than just walmarts
>>749521
So this is less camping and more just inconsistently homeless? If you're in the US, national forest should be your go-to, but could be further than home anyway. Wal-Marts are okay, but there's too many tweekers for me to be able to sleep. Churches will usually not call the cops, but there's usually no witnesses to keep the occasional tweeker from messing with you. Hospitals are probably the best lots I've parked in, you can say you're waiting for a relative in surgery and security will usually leave you alone. Only works once or twice, though.

Walmart let's people park RV and shit in their parking lot. It's some way to prevent drinking and driving.
So I've tried to make this thread in /x/ before but not a lot of those guys have really been /out/side that much. So I want to know your weird and scary experiences while trekking, camping etc. Not scared like when a bear clawed your scalp on your face kinda scared, I mean the supernatural type.
>Be once in a river log camp with 3 friends
>we have desolate camping houses in my country
>go to a lake nearby with friends
>swim and then sit on the beach
>after 15 minutes one of the rocks in the shallow water just starts sliding away
>hadn't paid attention but now we're all staring at it as it swims slowly further and starts to sink
>it looks like a human's head facing away with a bald head, not like a beaver or anything like that
>never found out what it was and kinda left it at that

>nice, good times
>two fisherman that were a couple hundred meters see me

ITT: Troll whining about people getting mad at trolling.

But anon I was just having fun and they had no business coming talk to me in a threatening way. If they asked nicely I would have stopped.

You can't really blame retards for acting retarded, OP.
Visiting Oregon in a few weeks. Are there any places that are a must see? Best places to hike? Flying into Portland and staying for about 5 days.
Multnoma falls for the tourist experience. Saddle mountain and Dog mountain are both nice hikes and depending on what kind of vehicle you have the logging roads off of 26 make for some great innawoods areas. When I lived there my favorite was N. Wolf Creek, the entrance is at mile marker 36 on Highway 26 about an hour west of Portland.
Places in Portland that are cool to visit are the Kennedy school and the portland city grill.

I was looking at Multnomah falls. But I'm not all for the touristy experience. Still have never seen a waterfall. I'm really looking for kind of mountainside hikes. Also was wondering if you could camp anywhere in the forests, or if you have to be at an actual camp site.

>never seen a waterfall
Some people go apeshit over them
>camp anywhere in the forests
If it is national forest or BLM land, the answer is usually yes
/out/ how can I optimize sawyer's mini usage? I mean i don't lile to drink directly from the filter so I always do pic related, the problem is it takes a while and it takes a couple times to fill my 1.5l water bottle because sawyer's water bag it's a shit to fill. Does anyone knows some tips to take maximum performance from it?
While hiking keep a catheter inserted into your penis and use the pouch as a fill bag, this way you can fill it directly while hiking and not waste time. Just like astronauts!
>>749239
Apparently the platypus bags fit on the sawyer.
>>749239
How much will the Sawyer bag hold?
I might plan a trip to Greenland for next year to hike from village to village. However, I don't know anything about this country. Anyone has had any travel experiences in Greenland? How was it? Share the stories if you will.
Everything Greenland related is welcomed
>>749221
It isn't as green as Iceland.
>>749221
I lived in Nuuk from 1995 to 1999 (moved from there the day i turned 5), but I remember how it was and know general things about the country. So if you have any more specific questions, I can try to answer them.

Where do you live now? Denmark?
Hey guys, anyone know of places to camp in Michigan? I've googled of course but most places appear to get a lot of campers, and I'm looking for something a bit more...secluded?
Sorry if this is a little open ended, or broad. Even if you guys know of some places outside of Michigan but still in the surrounding states. Most of my friends are shut ins so they're of little help.
How secluded you want and how far do you want to drive? Where do you live? Pigeon River area is about as secluded as it gets in the Lower Peninsula. Huron Manistee National Forest is pretty good too, I spend a lot of time there. I don't know how you can't find something in Michigan, it's a paradise for camping. The whole UP is practically a campground
>>749078
the DNR has a map of parks and campgrounds
http://www.michigandnr.com/parksandtrails/#map-tab
>>749078
Well, if you want secluded, what could be better than an island in a lake on an island that's a national park in a lake? You'd probably need an amphibious vehicle to get there.

Any sc/out/ want a kydex sheath for a USMC Ka Bar? Dont need it anymore. Hate to just thow it away.
Feel free to post shit you would like to get rid of. Maybe some less fortunate sc/out/ could use it.
I would love to have that. I'm in Houston tx . USA. I have some small cans of gas for a those 3 prong stoves I have more use for.

Wild Australia with Ray Mears
>Not following frontierspeople's ways
>Not learning indigenous hunting and cooking techniques
>Whale watching from a tourist boat
I'm not sure I like this.
>>748881
What the fuck?! I like watch ray for the smug bastard making fire in 2 seconds from wet logs then cooking some local animal and saying its delicious every single time.
>>748881
He's so old now :(
Also fuck Australia. Take Mel Gibson back.
I'd watch a hundred hours of him whittling by a camp fire while exchanging stories with other old fucks from around the world.
But a travel show?
Have you done your part in the fight against invasive species, /out/?
I spent all day Saturday removing Garlic Mustard from 43 acres of woodland.
Be sure to get it soon! It comes up early, another week or so and it'll be hidden by the native species.
>>748811
Do you do anything with it as far as food or flavoring?
I thought I read that some anon likes to eat it, but after reading the wikipedia article, it doesn't sound like people eat the plant on its own. Plus what the article said made it sound like the mature and flowering plants aren't really good for flavoring.
>>748825
Just feed it to pigs. It's pretty worthless.
>>748835
Reminds me, I really want to go boar hunting one day. With an M60 or something ridiculous. Chop em down.
Have you tried any recipes or even nibbled on the young garlic mustard? Does it seem appetizing at all?
Hey sc/out/s, how do I into deer hunting as a newbie? I've no hunting experience because my family are fairly anti-gun and you can't now hunt in Ireland but sod them, it's what I want to do, I just don't know how to do it
Also hunting general

Really want to do the PCT next year. Need to know how much it will cost in total to do the PCT?
Also, I'll be coming from the UK to do it, so stuff like visas and flights will make it more. Anything else I'll need to come from UK?
Thanks guys

Best advice I have for you is if you stop to resupply in Redding make sure you don't look like the gutter trash I try to run over every day.
how much gear do you already own?
how much do you hike?
what's the longest hike you've done?
what's the longest you've been /out/?
also, >>>/trv/ will probably be more help with flights and visas
Rock noob here, so I picked up this rock the other day and immediately thought that this is a flint rock, but it was not like any other flint I've ever seen. Are there any geologists here that can help me identify this rock, and tell me how valuable/rare is it. Rock was from Jordan btw. Thank you.
I finally did it guys. I planned my first hiking weekend in about a year from now. I'm pretty damn excited.
I wanted to ask you guys what do I need to know? What are the chances i'll be murdered?
Of course, i'll have all of the tools and I have some camping experience such as how to set up tent and how to build a fire.
I'll have a friend come with me but he never hiked before either. Any good spots to hike in upstate New York?
Pic somewhat related, it was my fishing trip down at delaware river.
>in about a year from now
you planned a year ahead for a weekend hike?
>>748136
I didn't make strict plans. More like an idea. I'm just excited and wanted to talk about it because i've never been on an outdoors trip before especially without my family.
why are you waiting a year?
