Didn't see a thread about it so what about an /out/ essentials thread?
I'm getting into hiking and camping with 2 friends and we're planning on what gear to get. There's 3 of us so splitting the weight won't be a problem and for now it's just over the weekend. We all have experience from camping, hiking etc but now we don't have any gear left aside from clothing, a tent and 1 sleeping bag and shovel.
How about you ask google instead? Way faster and probably more coherent answers

No less than 6 Moras
Who here has made a sheath for one of these puppies? I need some ideas, bros.
PS: I cannot work leather ;_;
You're better off just getting a bag for it. Or building a case out of wood. Curved blades are a bitch to sheath.
I keep all my carving gouges/spoon knives in a little box I made that stores them all vertically. Essentially a lot of little cubby holes
>>743836
sheath is to protect the cutting edge, not you.. in that case. Go to the hardware store and get a small length of plastic tubing, and cut a slit down the middle. or some of that black window screen spline. normally has a slit already premade down the middle of it. or you can get some of that protective floor mat, locks together with itself. its closed cell foam.. basically just carve a channel of your knifes shape into it, and use it as a box sorta?
>>743841
1. This knife is razor sharp and I intend on maintaining that. 2. That curved tip would do its best to eviscerate said bag every time I try to pull it out.
I basically wrapped duct tape around it into a ball for the time being but it looks ghetto as fug. Shame, this tool would be great for taking out into the woods and carving out spoons from green wood, but the shape is almost too wacky to take /out/.
Hey /out/! This is probably a dumb question, but I am having trouble finding hiking pants that fit me. I am average, 33x30 size, but everywhere I go it is either too baggy or too long. I currently have a pair of columbia hiking pants, but they are very baggy and they are the smallest size that still fits.Trying to plan a trip to Whitney in a month, but I want some better pants. Any recommendations?
PS: I've been to REI several times trying on pants, none of which I like.
-Pic related, they are the same pants I own.
I got some cheap ones at Sam's Club. Slim straight fit, thigh pocket and normal pockets
UV resistant and they don't get torn up by thorns.
Only $20, so that's a good deal in my book.
I tried those on the other day along with other pants.
I settled on arc'teryx rampart pants because they were loose and flexible with neat pockets- not much baggy butt. Their sizes are all kinds of fucked... 32 fit me best despite 30 being the more correct size.
srsly tho, them pockets
>"I am average"
>is a manlet
Sorry OP
I have always used a gas stove for hiking but I'm planning a trip with primarily camping in mind (will be taking an axe etc) and figured I would pick up a wood stove.
Ive come across the chinese copies on ebay for £12~. There are two that look about the same other than different pot stands, I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with them?

I'm also planning on picking up a titanium pot or even a set of titanium cookware as the aluminium kit I have now tastes terrible if you eat out of it. Any recommendations would be much appreciated.
I just bought one. Tried it like two weeks ago in my backyard. It was freezing point and dry. Started very easily and kept burning until depleted, with no unburnt fuel. Didn't have to push anything around. So far that looks pretty promising.
Just get the cheapest one or better yet make one yourself out of some tin cans. That is all these stoves basically are.
>>742882
Not gonna click those links but I'd tell you right now to get those foldable ones. The one in your pic can be built on site with a knife and an empty can so it's not worth the money. You might aswell get a lot of empty cans and get rid of them after a couple uses, specially if you are car camping.
So guys
Me and my brother are doing a 2 month trip to combodia.
We live in Scotland so we dont do heat but only humidity.
Im asking you guys what would be best for the jungle in terms of
>Clothing
>repellents
>Outdoor sleeping
>First aid
and any other tips for jungle enviroments.
Will be going at the start of the rainy season.
Thanks in advance!
>>742342
also sorry for the sloppy post and my lack of knowledge, any questions just ask!
>>742342
It's called the rainy season but it still will be incredibly hot. Also El Nino is going on and the area is going through a huge drought.
Clothing, long sleeve and light. I have a bunch of ex officio that works good. I find that I sweat so much here that the fancy fabrics don't wick away anything, but they do dry quicker. Key: a big wide brim Hat, the sun is brutal. I use merino for underwear and socks.
Repellants: I just use the stuff from 7/11 in Thailand, it works fine for me.
Outdoor sleeping: I used my Hennesy hammock once in Sumatra it was the most uncomfortable night of my life. I picked a bad spot, no air circulation which was a big problem, but in the heat I couldn't stop sweating. I had to wash it after one use. But a hammock would be your best option.
>>742342
'Strayan here. Make sure you stay hydrated. You're gonna sweat a shitload, so drink heaps and monitor your piss; if it's not completely clear, drink moar (water, not those idiotic energy drinks).
Fuck off cotton. You'll end up soaking wet and then freezing as soon as the sun goes down. Like other anon said, ex officio is good. Wear loose clothing and stick to synthetics.
What exactly is your accommodation? If you're planning on sleeping in the jungle without a guide or a group then you're mad cunts. Get bug nets obviously, a tarp and hammock setup would do you best. Ray Mears has a good tropical setup, look his shit up on youtube.
Just use whatever shit you can buy locally for repellant, but citronella works well.
Don't think you'll need anything special for first aid other than the normal shots before going there. Check regarding malaria.
Ok guys, I have followed the local board advice and dumped my gf.
My job allows me to live anywhere (well anywhere in the US will good internet and access to FedEx and an airport)
Now I want to focus on more outdoors activities like backpacking ,mountainbiking and fishing.
Right now I am thinking Colorado front range, any other suggestions?
>>741340
Jesus m8 which board recommended you to dump your gf and why did you listen to them?
>>741357
This board!
And it was definitely a good move, I was nothing more than a paycheck to that woman and she hated me spending any money on /out/ activities.
I am just glad I got out before she could conceive a baby. She kept "forgetting" to take her pills.
>>741366
If it'll make you more happy then you made the right choice. Just beware that our memories deceive us; we remember the good parts and forget the bad parts.
I heard something interesting the other day; someone said "Shes perfect but she wants me to do x"; and the other guy replied with "If she was perfect then that wouldn't be a problem".
Theres more to life than bitches anyway; myself and my partner split on new years and since then life has been great. I finally had and won a boxing match after years of training but not really applying myself enough to get in fighting shape. I've been /out/ loads and I've been studying buddhism heavily.
Good on you OP; pussy is just a distraction.
A thread for serious mountains, and the serious mountaineers who climb them. Seriously.
A serious mountain requires serious wildlife.
>>740923
/out/ Only cares about buying things and not actually goes /out/. A dude made a fucking kelp forest and the thread has less replies than a sock thread.
So in the span of two years have these axes had a 150% retail price increase or am I seeing things? They're going for $180 on eBay no less, and their Amazon avenue is around the two-hundreds. What happened?
The GB axe is a meme now, just like the Morakniv.
Just take a look at the kek frog statues for sale on Amazon if you wanna see how memes affect pricing of items
>>740523
This works out great for me since I've owned one in almost pristine condition for three years with minimal use (booklet included), and didn't think that selling it could actually be profitable
>>740526
You're part of the problem, you filthy juden
Why aren't you guys outside boating today? Its a beautiful day, get off 4cham and go /out/!
>>740310
it's snowing outside right now.
>>740310
I hiked 50 kms today.
>>740310
I'm working 12 hour nightshifts until monday morning. Feels bad man.
So you work /out/ and use your hands and they look like this. What does your wife say about that?
That you aren't used to manual labor. First time working?
>>738518
What wife?
>>738518
I wear work gloves for a reason, anon.
Who else pretends they're a ninja here?
I like to climb trees and surveil targets. I once spent 4 hours up a tree watching someone through their window.
>>738442
Some ppl call this "acting like a ninja" authorities would call this "stalking"
Why are you so autistic?
>>738442
"Pretending they're a ninja" isn't gonna cut it with the cops when they throw your ass in jail for borderline stalking someone.
I'll try to be constructive here and say to please try to find a more healthy and productive hobby. Climb all the trees and sight see all you want, but don't do illegal shit.
No really, is it summer yet?
Alright /out/ me and my cousin only have one summer to build a log cabin in the upper peninsula of Michigan before i ship out to Europe. Any advice? Thanks you. Also General Log Cabin i spose.
>Fell trees
>Allow to mature for a season
>Build cabin next year when logs are light and dry
Hmm small problem..
Think about this for a second. Do you really think that your ancestors waited a whole season after felling their logs to build their cabin? No. They would die.
Tldr; Modern techniques are much better suited for aged logs. Classic techniques are much better suited for green logs. you're going to have to account for shrinkage when making doors/windows with green logs. Also, the type of log matters for green vs aged. Softer woods are better for green cabins. This also brings on a whole new set of problems for your cabin which you'll have to address though. Softer woods are more prone to decay and disease. You'll need long and steep roof overhangs to protect from the sun and rain. Long roof overhangs mean splash back from rain. you'll have to have it adequately lifted (~24 inches) from the ground to prevent this. Take what i'm saying with a grain of salt though as what you'll need is entirely based on your areas climate.
I'm also in the process of building a cabin though. Keep on researchin and ask me any further questions, I'll try to assist.
>>738808
So where were building it theres going to be an abundant amount of lodging pine - the really tall pine with branches only at the top. Is that a good wood to use?
Pic obviously related.
Thylacine or Tasmanian tiger, thought to be exctinct. What does /out/ think?
Any sightings ?
what you think /out/
clearly never existed in the first place.
same with 'squatch. as of right now it meets all the guidelines of an extinct species.
>>737803
You might want to research michael moss

Thanks mate.
Kentucky general. Post pics, stories, or good places to hike.
>>737183
I actually just got back from Land Between the Lakes with some friends. Great time. Ever been to LBL?
>>737185
I haven't, I've always wanted to go though.
>>737192
idk just exactly where it is, like i live on the boarder of TN and KT its about an hour or so out. Im actually planning on going kayaking this weekend with the senpai
So I'm looking at getting myself an adventure bike and I'm looking at the dr 650. I was just wondering if anyone here had one and if it had any quirks I should know about?
Also I'm really new to motorcycles so forgive me for having noob questions. Like this: how can you tell when you need to refuel on a dr650 if it has no gas gauge?
/o/ and I had one without a gauge. You just know. Learn it's mpg and gas up like clockwork or like me, you will run out in the middle of nowhere.
>>741688
So perhaps have a little extra fuel with you and I guess I'll probably get myself a larger gas tank.
>>741679
>gas gauge
Sorry I gotta say this. newfag pls. staph.
most people forget that most motorcycles for a very long time were behind what most cars where doing, look at when motorcycles started getting ABS brakes, mid 2000's and even then they where like early versions of car ABS, shaky and scary as fuck. even despite their existence in cars.
Gas gauges on motorcycles, STILL aren't a thing. and rightfully so. you can look down into your fuel tank on almost every bike and judge how much gas you got left. most bikes also have a way of recording your mileage/trip. so you learn when you run out of fuel, and when to fuel up.
Dr650 is gonna be a bitch to ride on anything but clear cut trails and open fields. as a noobie. you have to be super skilled to pop over logs and shit. its over 300lbs.. so just trying to unstuck it in deep mud is gonna make you super tired. and waste tons of energy.
