>buy opinel sharpening stone
>try to sharpen out some nicks in my leatherman
>fail
Well, how do I git gud?
(I did soak the stone in water before using it before you ask)
>>750996
Just gotta get the right angle. But I normally can't get the blades super sharp with those stones, they aren't fine enough. Try the bottom of a ceramic mug after the stone.
If youre trying to get out nicks, start out with a lower grit and move up. Dont expect good results with just one stone, especially a small one.
Buying multiple stones is a good idea but it would get expensive (and wasteful if you dont know what youre doing)
For a good start, buy some sandpaper for a few dollars and lay it down on a perfectly flat surfave. I personally go from 120>240>600>1500

Wrong pic
I haven't seen this on /out yet. I'm not entirely sure if this is the appropriate board either; but I assume it would be.
Anyone on /out a backcountry skier, snowboarder or hybrid like myself?
I'm fairly new to the backcountry and am more curious on how others do it?
General backcountry ski thread?
Shovel, probe, beacon.
A class on how to use them.
A bro that has the same and taken the class, also.

Here in the alps you need a ABS backpack as well.
Someone on /adv/ said this was the place to post this.
So I bought a mushroom grow kit (Golden Teacher) and I think I might have done something really stupid.
It said to put them in the fridge, but as english is not my native language I mistook fridge for freezer (doh). Have I destroyed them now? I have been trying to grow them for about 6-7 days now and still no sign of anything.
Should I wait a bit longer and see what happens, or is this pretty much a lost cause?
I read somewhere that the first pinheads should appear after 5-20 days so I know it could still happen, but how long should I keep this up until I give up and try with another kit?

https://mycotopia.net/topic/86623-quick-spore-question/
Consensus here, is that dry spores may survive a freeze, but wet mycelium will almost certainly die. Prognosis doesn't look good.

My worst fear.
Thanks for the info dude:)
Anyone else rock run?
It's a savage mix of trail running and bouldering through rough boulder laden canyons and the jagged coastal shores.
I've been doing it for years with no real injures but quite a few scares. It requires your complete and total focus on you footing and the ability to bound from boulder to boulder while keepung your momentum because the end goal is beating the clock.
That sounds like literally the faggiest thing you could do while out.

Probably faggy when OP does it, but it can be cool

OP is helping his grandpa with a garden, any tips on making good compost?
We've got cows and chickens, so I've got plenty of organic material to work with
pic related
>>750460
You have chickens, that's a great thing for compost!
I like to let the them do most of the composting for me.
Look for a slope. Ideal close to the house and the garden (short ways) and shady (you can also plant some trees there)
Put a fence around and chickens inside
Put your manure + kitchen scrabs + garden waste + carbon rich material (straw, hay, leaves, wood chips...) inside your new chicken run at the top! of the slope and water it
The chickens now will scratch through the material, mixing it and pushing it further downhill
When the material arrives at the bottom of the slope, it should be rich compost, ready for the garden.
Keep the area shady and moist
No turning
No weed seeds
No insects
Free chicken food!

I've read that turning and disturbing the pile actually is not beneficial for compost.
Here's why. The core of the compost can reach pretty high temperatures which helps with decay. If disturbed, the thermic process basically has to start from the beginning delaying the time it would take for organic material to decay.
>>750486
You basically have two choices:
>composting fast, hot and have compost faster and have to work more
or
>composting slow, therefore cold and with less work
For hot compost , you build bigger heaps, add more nitrogen and keep it wetter.
Also you HAVE to turn it! because otherwise it will get too hot in the middle and not hot enough at the outside
When you build a good compost and turn every second day, you can have a finished compost within three weeks.
I would not feel comfy shovelling compost for half an hour every second day. Also you need a lot of material all at once. So I usually don't do hot compost.
The chicken compost is basically a form of cold compost. it's not in a big heap, and will therefore not get hot. Also the chickens will mix all the material, so you don't really have to do much. And you can always add material over time in small quantities.
Another great way to compost is vermiculture, composting with worms.
You make a box with a drain (for the garden you can use an old bathtub), add bedding material (leaves, newspaper..), composting worms (Asa foetida), some finished compost and kitchen scrabs. You can also add animal manure, but be careful with that.
The worms will again to the work for you and give you best! compost, worm tea (fertilizer) that drips out of the drain and worms of cause, that you can sell or feed to your chickens.
Hey guys I have some questions regarding navigation in national parks. Me and my gf will be travelling across Canada this summer and plan on visiting some parks, with the occasional 1 day hike.my question; how easy is it to navigate in these parks? Are the trails clearly mapped or do I have to step up my very limited skill with a compass? Thanks in advance.
>>750374
You will be fine as long as you build cairns every 50yds.
>>750390
Kek

This.
Carins have saved my life more times than I can count.
Has anyone here been hiking in the smokies? Would I be able to shoot my bow near my campsite or would I get busted by a ranger? Pic unrelated

>Implying you can carry 2 pounds for more than 2 miles

If you're in a national or state forest you can target practice to your hearts content as long as you're not being a dumbass about it.

Any beekeepers in the northern VA region? Starting a hive soon and would like to visit a couple established hives first to learn from experienced beekeepers. Trying to get some Russian bees for their hygenic traits, hear they're kinda agressive though. Thoughts?
>>750193
Russians are fucking mean. I had one Russian hive and I couldn't go near it without a suit. The main reason people want Russian bees is for their ability to withstand cold weather, everything else is just like an Italian. It's already too late in the year to order a package colony so if you want one you're gonna have to go buy a nuc from someone, or wait til you see a feral swarm.
>>750247
That mean huh? That's pretty wild.
I'm hoping to get a nuc, going to a local beekeepers meeting in 2 weeks. May end up having to wait until next year though 'cause it seems that most folks preorder their nucs in the winter already.

If you have any other questions do you have any social media you can hit me up on if you need something?
Hey /out/ I apologize in advance if this is the wrong board for this but Im in need of some advice.
Basically tomorrow Im going to go on my first solo overnight trip. I'm gonna be camping in a lean to and hiking some local mountains for 3 days and it's gonna be great. The only thing is, I'm considering bringing shrooms with me and spending half of one of my days shroomin at base camp, and the thing is, I'm worried about other hikers running into me. The lean to I'm staying at is about half a mile off a main trail, and I don't want people who are checking if the lean to is empty are going to give me trouble. Do you guys think this is something worth worrying about? Im somewhat expirenced with shrooms and I'm 100% confident I can handle my shit and not get lost in the woods or anything like that. Is this something I should be worried about?
Totally depends on the area you're in. Sure some guys later in this thread would tell you about:
>The mysterous national park disappearances
>Wild animals
>Wild /k/anaks
>Shrooms being degenerate
It just totally depends on your area.
>>750185
Personally I wouldn't op, you never know what's going to happen and if I were you I would prefer to stay in a sound state of mind , few years ago me and some buddy's did the same after an exvergise while back at camp absolutely tripping balls and then got word that the co had decided to move the company back to the ex area and each section would be dropped off about ten k or so from a company patrol harbour that was being set up innawoods , full gear , noise and light discipline the whole way, absolutely sucked.
>>750306
Why the fuck would you take shrooms while in the military?
So I want to do a few hikes in the desert but I'm not sure how to sustain my water capacity throughout the trip, anyone have experience finding semi reliable water to purify/filter on a desert outing?
Location: Mojave/Nevada area
Bump, all the internet is giving me is unpractical solar collectors and digging my own well
>>750070
If you go bit southeast of Primm, you should be able to get some outside of town.
Basically you gotta ruck it all on your back, unless you wanna dig for water but it's unlikely you'd be able to dig far enough to reach underground sources of water since its the Mojave after all.
>t. desert person
Sorry if this is wrong board. Is anybody here into birding? It's recently come to my knowledge that I live in the vicinity of some very great migratory bird sanctuaries that thousands of people flock to each spring from all over the country. I've been going to some with binoculars and really enjoy walking around and looking at all these strange birds that I've never seen around here. I can't help but notice the people who do this though, they all have fuck huge cameras and get really excited when they see certain birds. They know the names of them and everything. It looks like a great hobby, to me it seems like IRL Pokemon where you try to snap pics of rare birds. I'm thinking about getting me an entry level camera even though I don't fit in with the people that are into this hobby at all. They're all old and dress like park rangers.
Just curious if there was anybody here that does this. I guess it belongs here, if not I can take it to /p/.
Pic is where I went earlier. You can't see the whole island but there were thousands of these water birds on one island going crazy.
Thinking about getting into it as well. I love watching birds.
>>750019
I'm getting into it but they are so different IRL from the pics. And yes, this board is appropriate. We enjoy being out and everything related
So Sports Chalet is going out of business. How does /out/ feel about this?
>>749963
A sports chalet near me closed about 1.5 years ago and a sports authority bought it and took over. Sports authority closed after less than a year. I wasn't sad. Their "store closing" blowout sales were an absolute joke. Everything was %10 off of original price. No deals whatsoever. They can all go outta business for all I care. I go to consignment shops and thrift stores to find all my /out/ gear
>>749968
What's a consignment shop?
>>750002
its a pawn shop for poor people
Any android apps for navigating areas, showing the land parcel boundaries and who owns them?
The county government site lists the info, but it would be a lot easier to be able to access the info while on the go.
>>749938
wish my county would list the info for free... gotta go to the stupid office to get any information.
no apps that I currently know of. no.
>>749960
I saw a program for garmin, but they wanted like $100 for it...if I can't find anything, I'm just going to get some good prints from google maps and make an overlay for the approximate plot areas
the larger cities have the info, but the smaller cities and townships just don't have the resources for it...
there are a number of trusts that own huge chunks of land next to a nearby river, but luckily there are strips of land owned by the county and utility company that cut through the lots....it's nearly all forested areas except for where it's been cleared for power lines
That sort of stuff is pretty much GIS domain. I've never heard of an application that does it. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist though.
My neighbors just started a forest fire. How are yall doin though?
