I had been planning to hike the Maroon Bell 4 pass loop next week and its supposed to thunderstorm a lot of the week.
Anyone have any experience hiking in Colorado in this type of weather?
I've heard some say this is unavoidable in Colorado and you just have to get down each pass by 11 or 12.
I've heard others say I'll get fried by lightening.
I'm a novice backpacker so I'm not really sure what to believe....
Just spent two weeks hiking in CO. Thunder almost every day. Just find shelter until they pass and keep going. Don't stay on the passes too long and try to do then before noon. Otherwise you shOuld be fine.

Yeah dude, high mountain thunderstorms aren't something to fuck around with.
I would plan to be making your descent down by the time the storms even start rolling in.... if not below treeline by then.
Should you find yourself caught in a storm... find a low spot in a valley (or as low as you can easily get to) and crouch down on the balls of your feet. If you're in a group, spread out 20-30ft from each other. Wait it out.
>Clouds rolling in on the way up the mountain to this site
>Lightning fried a microwave radio on this tower a few days earlier, POE injector in the doghouse got zapped too
>Backup POE injector already installed in the cabinet (move the cable), had a replacement radio in the truck
>not going up the tower today
>flash of lightning, nearly immediate thunder
>timetogo.exe
>Boogie'd down the mountain
Site I had come off of an hour or so earlier had a lightning shelter just off the road in the saddle of the two summits. Big 6ft-round steel cylinder on its side, wall/window on the far side, door on the front side, benches inside... sort of "cage" around the outside of it... all heavily grounded... Good to know it's there, but I don't wanna have to chill out in there waiting for a storm to pass either.

>I've heard some say this is unavoidable in Colorado and you just have to get down each pass by 11 or 12.
Yep. They're magnificent.
>I've heard others say I'll get fried by lightening.
You will if you're not off of the mountain by when the storms move in.
Why should I not wear jeans when I go camping?
If I don't where am i supposed to clip my knife scabbard?
I'm serious I'm new here
All jeans are pants, not all pants are jeans
More breathable water resistant options exist that you can still attach your knife fedora to
>>840178
>knife fedora
So is there disdain for having a sheath instead of say putting it in my PFD?
Ladies and Gentlemen but mostly ladies, I’m here with you again.
You wouldn’t believe the sheer heights I’ve risen to since you all last gathered round last month. I’m now chief plant architect of the housing co-op where I moved just 2 weeks ago.
Once the minorities I will pay to build it for me are finished, I’ll have 10 garden beds under my fief.
>>840081
If I get my way, and I always do, it will also have 3 oversized compost bins, a perennial food forest and a bench for me to seat my royal ass.
>>840081
>>840084
I’ve also built these.
There’s 2 things I like about sub irrigated planters. One, you never have to water them.
And two, you never have to water them.
If irrigating by hand is beneath the African lion, it’s beneath me as well.
>>840096
My old garden will remain mine as well, because once you win land, you must never relinquish control.
>Be innaicelake
>Waiting with my trusty weapon
>A curling stone
>Waited with it all goddamn season
>No deer no moose no small game bagged this year
>It's the last day of Canadian goose season
>See one of them fuckers
>Sneak up behind it
>Deploy_stone.exe
>Fucking stealth stone, the bastard doesn't hear it
>BOOM
>Hits him in the side, doesn't kill
>Wing broken
>My two partners show up with their brooms
>Bastard goose tried to run away from the stone
>Not today fucker
>Intense fucking sweeping
>Stone starts to redirect its path to the goose
>Bastard turns to the left
>right back into the ice
>Sweepers start going fucking ham on it
>It starts speeding up
>The goose is loose
>Keeps running around on the ice
>wildgoosechase.webm
>This continues for hours
>Finally the fucker is exhausted
>Collapses and allows the stone to run him over
>Fuck yeah bag and tag
>Start tagging
>Check the time
>12:01 AM
>Department of wildlife shows up
>Arrested for killing a protected species out of season
>Get 10 years
Curling stones only slide so far because they disperse water droplets so that the surface of the ice has a bumpy texture. Lake ice is usually quite smooth with cracks and fissures.
Your story isn't even technically plausible, otherwise you would have included those technical details in your stupid fucking story.
Furthermore, sweeping or not, speeds up or slows down the stone. It does not change it's direction, the intended curve is planned by the person throwing the stone by subtly manipulating the handle.

A group of friends and I are planning a camping trip to Vermont on Labor Day weekend. Do you guys have any recommended sites or tips?
We have some experience /out/ and we like hiking, swimming.
Only retards and normies go camping on labor day weekend. Which are you?

>camping trip to Vermont on Labor Day weekend.
I can assure you it won't look like your pic. Come a month later.
If you don't know, they are called the Green Mountains for a reason.
>>839907
>labor day weekend
Avoid all campgrounds if you can. Get a backcountry pass.
I need to make a bugout bag for when SHTF. What should I buy?
bruv, buy yourself a robot assistant that's capable of searching the catalog
>>839865
Not only is it in the catalog, if you google "bug out bag content list" you'll be looking at shit for the next three months. Why even bother coming here?
>>839889
Because I trust my fellow anons will give me the best answers.

I'm pretty new to backpacking, but I have a full set of gear. Problem is, I didn't realize until now that most of the places I want to go require a fee. Normally I don't mind this, but sometimes, like today, I just want to leave the house on a spur-of-the-moment 3-4 day backpacking trip, and I want to do it for free. Are there any general rules of thumb on where you can and can't go for free? I think I heard that state forests are free, at least the one was that I went to.
National forests are free if you live near one
Idk about parks tho
>>839744
Usually the fee is for a campsite or parking. Just call whatever place you plan on going and ask
>>839752
That's what i'm confused about. What, exactly, is a "campsite"? Does this apply to backcountry-type hikers?
I'm a year into getting a BS in Forestry and am looking to volunteer/work doing something related.
I'm in Arizona...How difficult is to get get a volunteer/paid position as a Firewatcher? Generally, what is the application/interview/screening process like? What do they look for? Do I just wait for them to post openings at the start of next year or is there a way to apply ahead of time?
>>839673
Go to USAjobs.gov
They don't hire fire watchers really anymore. It's all done by satellite now.
>>840102
This, there's a few manned firewatches in the Cascades but they're mostly there as an attraction for hikers.
The FS guy who was posted at Granite Mountain a few summers ago would bring cookies and hand them out to the kids that made it all the way up the trail.
Do any of you plant fags know what this is?
>>839668
Can you at least give us the region where you found it?
>>839668
Datura
Very toxic to animals and people, but looks pretty, and gets pretty large. The seed pod spikes can irritate your skin terrible. Amounts of toxin in the seeds varies drastically and morons eat them as a drug for really bad trips.
Datura Stramomium. AKA Jimson Weed, Zombie Cucumber, toloache. Grows wild in most temperate regions. One ingredient in zombie powder used by Haitian witch doctors. Eat x number of seeds, you see God. Eat x plus a few too many....you meet God! Leaves used to be sold in anti-asthma cigarettes (pic related). There's a great account of British soldiers eatin a salad of the leaves in the American Revolution. Fucked 'em up for a WEEK! Tread carefully...
What did I grow in my garden? Purple pods when just growing, but here we are now. These beans were a bio experiment so I've no clue what they are.
>>839547
that is grade A methamphetamine my dude
>>839557
holy shit i didn't know you could grow that in a highschool classroom.

You must be 18 or older to use this website.
I want a camera for outdoors, I want a DLSR for the fact I want to do video recordings of things too.
It doesn't have to be "SUPER" light weight, as I motorcycle mostly to my /out/ adventures. so an extra bag isn't really an issue. the only thing I MUST have is an audio jack for hooking up an external microphone, the camera itself doesn't even need a microphone for all I care, just the ability to take low light pictures, and record in low light. AND to be at least water proof, so I can use it in the rain/around water like on a boat. [or has a decent enough waterproofing case]
but IDK what to get. what I want to do with the camera.
go to urban areas at night and just take pictures of the things around.
take pictures of birds at dawn/dusk
do lots of video recording of storms.
close up shots of bugs/mushrooms/plants/flowers
basically really boring shit. Everytime I see something cool I try to snap it with my cellphone camera, LGG3 fyi. and it either didn't focus right, or the picture is just not clear enough.
as far as price, I want a fair price, but I also want a decent enough camera to work with, that I can use for the next 10 years without having to worry about quality.
As a photographer: any DSLR will be too hevy around your neck after an hour. Get a smaller mirrorless cam like the Nikon 1 oder even a waterproof outdoor compact cam
Theres virtually no reason to drag a heavy ass DSLR into nature.
>>839497
>hevy around your neck
You know LowePro makes some pretty amazing backpacks. yes?
>>839502
Oh youre that kind of photographer.... so you wanna drag the cam out od0f the ruck and put it back several dozen times per day?
Protip: your cam needs to be ready. And to achive that it has to hang in front of your chest.
Does /out/ know what kind of flower this is?
artichoke.
>>839445
protea, queen protea i think
>>839449
oh nvm definately not queen, but some variety theres like a million different ones.
This is a spider bite I just got, I feel hot and weak, what kind of bite is it?

Looks like a brown recluse bite, very poisonous
