Esee 5 or Esee 6 or???

Looking for a new knife for end all be all every day use/inawoods/SHTF knife.

Been reading that Esee knives are tier 1 and the Esee 5 will last a lifetime.

But for bushcraft, survival, camping needs what knife is the best?

Avoid memes. Go for a classic shape that will be good at classic knife work. No serrated edges because then you can't sharpen the damn thing again. No sharp spine since you want to be albe to press your thump against it.
Full tang for strenght.

ESEE 3HM if anything.

Resist the urge to get large knives - they're far less useful, than a more reasonably sized blade.

Esee are indeed very good quality, but you want a knife that's somwhere between 3 inches, and 4.5 inches tops - anything more is going to be too unwieldy.

Some options to consider:

Skookum bush tool
LT Wright genesis
LT Wright Lagom
Esee 3HM (modified handle)
Esee RB3
Helle Temagami
Numerous woodlore variants like this one here: http://www.tlim.net/602.php

Some general specs:

4'' straight back, drop point, or spear point blade (including kephart).
1/8'' thick
high carbon steel (A2, O1, 3V, 1.2235, 52100, 5160, 1095 or similar)
Simple, comfortable handle with no guard, and no finger grooves, or other "pseudo-ergonomic" features.

If you are comfortable with it, you can go as low as a 3'' blade, and 3/32'' thick.

The only caveat here is that for camping, you might want a 4-5'' blade for slicing food, but you can just get a $10 mora, or an appropriately-sized Opinel for that.

Pic related (2nd from the left) is the general style of knife you want. I could also recomment the jessmuk (great knife), but only if you don't mind spending $235+ (the other options I mentioned will run you anywhere from around 80 bucks, to about 170).
>>
>>959412
depends on what you mean by "sharp spine".

If you mean double edged, then heck no - a single edge is what you want. But what is generally known as a "sharpened spine" is more like an ice skate, and you want that to strike a ferro rod, or to clear bark, etc.

And pressing your thumb on it isn't a problem, but you should avoid swedges, since that's where you would press with your other thumb sometimes.

Bushcraft survival stuff is all a meme used to sell trash to dumb kids.

Buy a good knife for hunting; helle and bark river are good. Only use them for processing game, nothing else. This knife needs to be kept scary sharp all the time so you can process an animal quickly without trouble. Needs to have a round spine to be able to "unzip" the belly to get guts out, needs a belly of some kind to skin properly, must have a good slicing geometry; flat grind with secondary bevel of small size, and a handle with some kind of guard (pic related) so it doesnt slide your hand onto the blade when wet. For whatever wood related stuff (feathersticking, carving, cutting etc) use a mora or an equivalent. Blade geometery should be either a scandi grind or a thin convex edge. Can be full tang but it isnt a neccesity. And for chopping of any kind for the love of god buy an axe, unless you want to get half the work done in twice the amount of time dont buy a big fuck off knife. You DONT need to baton, you DONT need to chop trees, you DONT need to pry things, you DONT NEED ANYTHING MORE THAN 3MM THICK. There is always an abundance of wood on the ground, burn that instead of splitting logs with your gay ass fucking knife.

If you need a knife for shtf buy a kabar + the above. A dedicated fighting knife is good to have, but dont carry it everywhere like a spaz. Buy a gun instead.
>>
>>959475
>hunting knife

actually, most use you get from your main knife has something to do with working wood, not processing a full-sized buck.

>>959433

pretty decent knives. What's the little one? Roselli?

>>959427
>pristine, never-before-used bk2

sure sunshine. Tell me more about how your vast theoretical experience lets you theorise about that brick being adequate for anything even remotely knife-related.
>>
>>959477
What kind of woodwork exactly? Because making a fire/shelter is kind of a one time thing and I doubt you are going to be doing much else for an extended period of time. Getting food is a much more periodic thing especially depending on what type of game. If someone is getting rabbits and grouse you are going to be doing it daily. If you are going to be trapping/collecting hides a good knife is going to save you alot of work in the long run. Again if shtf having some wealth in skins for trade is very valuble.
>>
>>959481
Also having the best steel for a hunting knife is good so it stays sharp when you are away from camp/sharpening implements. I doubt anyone is going to be feathersticking a mile away from their camp.

only if you can get it around 100 dollars.

For $135+ you can get a next gen or bush baby from lt wright, and for $170 a full size genesis, with some other options around $140.

Tops just cannot compare.

>>

Why not?

Are you a lazy cunt that would rather have stainless steel?
>>
>>959632
Performance.

There are some pretty good stainless steels out there, like 12c27, 440c, s35vn etc, but most high performance outdoor knives use tool steels like a2, d2, o1, or 3v, and those ard not stainless.

Then there are things like Roselli's uhc steel at 66-68 hrc

Throw sparks off of the spine, sharpen in the field easily.

Sure. You can go for high end super steels like zdp 189, infi, or maxamet, but besides being quite expensive and in some cases pita to heat treat, an outdoor knife working conditions are quite different from innacity edc cutlery.
>>
Won't the Esee rust in humid conditions or if exposed to light rain or wet wood? Is there any metal that is not carbon but not 440 and stays sharp? I don't want to worry about rust and running out of oil after months.

Does it matter? Aren't there some states with stand your ground and castle doctrine things? If they are threatening you with a knife or about to beat you to the ground with a steel rod I assume that it being cooler, wallet or your anal virginity doesn't matter to the law.

jesus christ pls be troll

do you use it for nothing but playing in wet forest? does it have literally zero patina? i have high carbon knives and as long as i use them for daily cooking chores for about two weeks each (wash n dry afterwards duh), they develop a robust patina. it also means i'm intimately familiar with the feel of the knife before it ever comes in the woods with me.

ESEE is a shit brand for what they are vs what they say they are. It's 80% marketing.

>>
>>959433
>>959655
I'm interested in the water 6 myself, but I'll admit that I worry about, and over think things a lot; I worry that a 3/16" blade is too thin for survival if I had to use it for chopping, batoning, etc is I didn't have my axe/hatchet with me. I heard the 6 tapers very quickly and isn't really 3/16" the majority of the blade, just the the beginning at the hilt. Can those of you who own it give me some insight? I know people complain about the 5 being unnecessarily thick at 1/4" but it's overbuilt design gives me peace of mind.

TL;DR Is the esee 6 tapered quickly or only nearer to the tip, orshould I just get the 5 for peace of mind?
>>
>>961427
Water=Esee because phone's auto correct is annoying.
>>
>>959825
It got damp for ten seconds and it rusted ...so if I DIDN'T use it it wouldn't of rusted. If I lay it down on a damp log/any situation with water I don't want to tend to it every single second of its life. I'm not always going to have oil. Are there any high tier knives that are 440c, s35vn?

I would be really fucking surprised if you broke this knife under "normal" ude including sensible betoning

It's just to long and for most camp chores. And it's not really a good chopper because it's a knife and not an axe

Fällkniven

And the vg-1 and 3v Cold Steels ( the reasonable ones like the SRK ) are good as well

ESEE is a meme just like TOPS
>>
>>961601
>reasonable
>srk

Pick one. Srk is just another "muh indestructibible survihvul knoife" meme.

Tops makes a zillion silly designs and a few reasonable ones like scandi trekker, bob, shango and maybe some others. Both tops and esee are very good quality, but what kills them for me is the fact that they're in the same price range as bhk, and ltwk, and they just can't compete.
>>
>>961611

SRK is a pretty solid design.

It's light and straightforward, issued at BUDs

>>
>>964023

too big, too heavy, too thick, poorly designed handle, bad geometry.

Literally everything about this knife, every dimension, is blown way out of proportion for the sake of "muh indestructible knoife" for no actual benefit (a 1/8'' thick knife is more than enough for hard use), and actually reduces performance, so the main purpose of it (said hard use) is a pain in the posterior.
