So I'm about to purchase my first car after totaling the car my parents bought me.

I wanted to know, what kind of maintenance would I be looking at if I bought a classic 6 cylinder mustang, or a classic caddy, or some classic vehicle. Are there any classic vehicles that are better for DDing?

I'm not a total noob to maintenance as I had to do a lot of work on my E90 BMW myself because of cost of labor at the stealership. Are there any good forums for classic cars? I remember the bimmer post forums saved me tons of money.

Would a BMW 2002 be an easy fixer upper?

Other than greasing the chassis, setting timing, and keeping the carb tuned, you'll spend most of your maintenance time keeping a 40+ year old vehicle from plainly falling apart.
>>
>>14721138

Mustang Coupes are amazing if you want in on the classic car game.

Get them now while prices are nice and low - Everyone spent years blinded by the fastbacks, but the market for those is absolutely fucked. In about 5 years, Coupes will be very expensive.

So it's mostly body work? How difficult is maintenance and what products should I definitely get and what products should I avoid

Also how expensive would it be to get an LS1 in a 66 Mustang

/o/ please recommend a good set of all season tires.

They will be used on a Subaru Forester and may see some dirt roads occasionally.

Currently I have these BFGoodrich Touring tires on it, and they are very noisy and worn, time for a replacement.

Alright, I don't know shit about cars, what would be an easy manual transmission car to maintain? By easy I mean that the parts are relatively cheap and easy to come by. I want to learn more about cars and work on them to become an expert. Any reliable websites for comparing parts, buying shit, and generally to learn more about cars?

ITT we talk about out experiences with Aquaplaning.

Me tonight:

>doing 130 km/h on the highway, wondering why the remote controlled signs say 80km/h speed limit.
>spot a huge pool of flood water under a bridge about 5 seconds too late.
>car feels like it's on ice and I can feel the rear end pulling to the right.
>shit bricks and try to angle the wheels to the correct direction
>skid ends and rattles the car
>manage to keep in on the road

Moral of the story: Never doubt the road condition adjusted speed limits.

Hey guys, so I have around 10k, and I was wondering if the mazdaspeed6 is a good choice. I currently have a 300td, but I'm really getting tired of it, and I'm looking for something faster, while maintaining quality and spaciousness. I'd appreciate it if you guys helped me

Say I have pic related, a first gen LS400. Market value about 3K.

Market value for a decent E39 M5 around here is about 13-15K. Smart option, of course, would be to buy one. However I kinda like the LS's looks more(guess they've grown on me), the weight is a bit lower, and it's got better front suspension compared to the M (struts. Vs. Double wishbones).

Now, suppose YOU had a 10K budget to spend, to make an LS400 into a drivers car that can compete with the M5. What would you spend it on?

If you say manual swap, it'll be between 2 and 5K. Figure 3K, and assume a 7K budget.

>make an LS400 into a drivers car that can compete with the M5
no offense but i don't think that's really possible. the LS is great though

off the top of my head you'd have to
>new wheels and top of the line tires
>completely new suspension
>more power out of the engine, supercharger maybe
>lots of chassis stiffening

another issue is the lack of performance aftermarket, like i dont think there's polyurethane bushings for it

why not get an SC300 and do lots of supra parts swaps? it's the same platform so (most) parts are interchangeable. turbo dat 2jz
>>
>>14724122
So basically, this would be enough:
http://www.autotrader.nl/auto/lexus-ls/1996/helmond/735nx/lexus-ls-ls400-600-pk-zeer-snelle-auto/

>turbo
>600hp
>coilovers
>wheels & tires
>brakes

It'd just need chassis stiffening.

I'm dead set on a V8.

Just got the head out of my mr2 (gen II 3s-gte)

I ordered a head gasket kit from rockauto, and some assorted hardware from Toyota

How can I tell how healthy the head is?
The intake valves are blackish, the exhaust valves are a dry brown

What else should I do while I'm in here? Doing the HFH and the thermostat, any other ideas?

The motor and turbo are both relatively healthy, it just needed a head gasket because it ran hot for a while

Holy shit.
You're going to fuck this up if you haven't already.
Take the head to a shop please. Leave it to the professionals to make sure it's good.
And you'll probably fuck up the installation.

Take the valves out and clean / lap them.

No real reason not to if you have the head off already.

Most of their lineup is angry looking boring fwd economy peoples cars.

Does anyone have experience with the Infiniti I35? A local small dealer with a good reputation is selling a 2002 model with 120k miles for $3900.
Is it reasonably reliable? Easy to work on? (spark plug, belt, fluid changes etc.)
24 posts and 8 images submitted.
>>
looking at that engine bay, you gotta separate the intake manifold to reach the far bank spark plugs.

its not overly difficult, but it can be intimidating to newcomers to wrenching

otherwise it looks basically like a V6 Altima set up of similar years. Transverse V6 belts can be difficult sometimes, but that comes with the territory.
>>
>>14723291
If you like it get it, OP. Just a Nissan so it won't be crazy hard to work on.

If you're willing to put up with CL weirdos you might be able to find something newer with fewer miles on the private market.

So basically detach it from the engine and get it out of the way to get to the plugs on that side? I guess that's not so bad. I'm relatively new to working on cars but I think I can manage that much.

>>14723327
I been looking on CL for manual transmission cars. But I ran into this one on a spur of the moment while looking at a Lexus on his lot. Looks very nice and might be willing to settle on an auto trans for it. Then again he is also selling a $1000 Geo Prizm manual that I could learn on and DD until I find the right manual transmission driven car I want.

When I install a fuel pressure regulator for a Carbed engine fed by an electric fuel pump, do I install the regulator near the Carb to compensate for head loss?
8 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>14722037
usually yes.
>>
>>14722037
Best choice would be to get with the times & install injectors.
>>
>>14722037
You install in the return line just after the carb. If you don't want a return line, get a mechanical pump.
