Sounds like you have never hunted larger game before. Doing that is not only a waste of the meat and hide, but a waste of the tag you received.

Use whatever rifle you're most comfortable with. I've brought down two Elk with arrows. One was a two blade the other was a three blade. Two blade one nicked it's heart and it didn't even make it 20 yards down the hill. Three blade was a clean lung shot that nicked the spine when it jumped. Dropped on the spot.

I've harvested over a dozen with rifle calibers too. What I'm getting at is it really boils down to what you're comfortable with. Bigger doesn't mean better. What matters more than anything else is that you practice with the rifle you will be using so you can get that clean shot. So many times I've seen hunters try to harvest game with a rifle they never shot before and it ends in fucking disaster. They either gut shot the game or do some next level bullshit like injuring themselves.

The best caliber for large game is the caliber that you are best with. If you're best with .223 and it's legal to use in your area then by all means use it.

no just no
the only gun thats cheaper to build than buy is the ar15 since all parts are easily available and you dont build as much as assemble. the next cheapest gun would be an ak build. you are looking at about 300 bucks in tools if you are starting from nothing and dont break even until ak 3 or 4. most parts kits builds cost way more than just buying one. you build as a labor of love. the only way its cheaper is if you are building 10 or have a machineshop at your disposal.

building to save money is a stupid idea.
