Old Intuos 4 broke and I'm currently looking to buy a new one on eBay. I'm not at all well-versed on tablets, and I can't really afford anything over 100 USD at the moment. So far, I'm settling on just buying a regular Wacom Bamboo or one of those little Intuos Draw tablets since I'm only a hobbyist and not a career artist. Not really looking for anything with snazzy add-ons for now.

I guess this is just another piss and moan thread...

Whenever I sell a commission or I end up with a successful drawing I could vomit - I get to many butterflies in my belly. I can't sleep for days and get super excited.

I'm so fucking addicted to the feeling of success whenever I have a low time or I simply lose one or two watcher on a plattform I could jump right out of the window.

And I feel so despicable for it... The worst part is - this is just my hobby. I own a house, I have a steady income, I'm happily married. But when my art receives no attention for some time I want to shoot myself. What the fuck is wrong with me.

>My happiness level is directly link to my success in art and it makes me sick...
Me in a nutshell.

>be drawing
>it's shit
>want to end my life
>if somehow produce something good
>want to live and git better
>have to repeat this cycle of doing bad and good
>not sure if want to live or not anymore

Sucks that I ain't like you OP, I've got nothing but this, this is my life line. If I fail this, guess that's it.

I had to decide if I want to study art or try something more save. I went the save route. A buddy of mine didn't and he now survives by pretending to be a girl on patreon an drawing porn. He just moved out and has zero social skills and all... no fancy car or anything like that. Yet I envy him... so fucking much. It's retarded.

Whys that make you sick? Do you wanna feel happy for waking up and scrubbing shit? Do you wanna smoke weed until you die?

What's the best way to train yourself to be creative? How do you create metaphors and symbolism? How do you visualize abstract emotions in fun, imaginative ways?
25 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
That depends on what you define to be creative.

By using what you already know and making a reference to something else.

With your imagination.
>>
>>2880762
Take something you know and flip it or combine it with something else you know. Chances are that it will be creative to someone else

I've been obsessed lately with this OP, mostly because I feel as if I have lost my creativity.

How many hours of work went into the old master paintings?

Do we know how long it would take Vermeer, Eyck, Holbein or Leonardo to complete a painting?

I don't think it's easy to come up with exact numbers, and it would vary from artist to artist and at different time periods, as well as for the individual pieces. That said, many master works took a lot longer than you might think, and a lot longer than most modern artists spend. They also typically had a lot more prep work involved. It was common for paintings to take months and sometimes even years to complete, but that time is not usually fully spent on the painting as many artists would work on and off or have several paintings worked on simultaneously, and would also take time for things like layers to dry.

An extreme example (although a bit more recent historically than the artists you mentioned) would be Millais working on Ophelia. You can read about it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ophelia_(painting)#Painting_process
>>
>>2878105
Thank you.
>>
>>2878422
Also
The old masters weren't just artists too.
They were architects, sculptors, and engineers too. So while they were working on a painting, they were probably doing a sculpture here, a cathedral there, etc.

Can anyone who has used the Reilly method extensively fill me in on how it has helped you?

I'm more of a Loomis/Bridgman/drawing the Marvel way guy myself. I'm working as a pencil artist for a comic at the moment so I draw plenty of faces everyday. Regardless of the feedback I receive I'll try it out for a couple of weeks and see if I gain something from it but I'd love to hear some opinions too.

It's basically just a more complex version of those other systems because it takes into account more planes and anatomical features. The real strength of it is how it relates all these features to one another so things are symmetrical and solid and in proportion. You should be drawing from one side of the face to the other and relating them constantly. Honestly I feel the example you posted is not doing it very well at all, and in fact many of the rhythms they drew are done in tons of small lines rather than longer gestural ones. The system is meant to be a combination of gesture and structure simultaneously.

That said, it can quickly become very bloated. Just look at Jack Faragasso's book and you can see it becomes needlessly complex for no real reason. Many people who use the method end up discarding a lot of it, I know for example Jeff Watts only uses a fraction of the construction lines, and even the ones he uses he doesn't always draw in but rather will "ghost" draw them by gliding his pencil over the line but not having it touch the paper so there is no mark. Others at his atelier use a combination of Reilly and Loomis.

I also feel the method works best when working from observation/ref. If you are inventing a face and use the method you can quickly end up with generic faces.

I'm getting all pumped again about digital art. I really feel like 2017 is going to be a good year for improvement. One of the things I love listening to as I paint is the success of fellow artists who enjoy painting my similar interests.

I was wondering if anybody had some good illustration podcasts. I've listened to everyone of these. I need new new content. whats ur fav podcast /ic?

This thread is meant for artists who might want to try to make anime works in-between their studies. It is strongly recommended that you use this thread in conjunction with learning the elements and fundamentals of art. You can also discuss the visual elements of various professional artists as well if you keep it relatively articulate and civil.

Submit your drawings, receive feedback or critique others! Share your knowledge and remember to thank those who've critiqued or red-lined your drawings. Most importantly, have fun!

Fresh off the Mayflower? Then do yourself a flavor and check out /ic/s complementary subordinate sticky here:
