I'm a beginner that has been learning to draw for about a year. I recently began learning from the Figure drawing book by Andrew Loomis. This picture was my first attempt at the mannequin posing on page 58.I would appreciate some criticism on what I did right and what I did wrong and how to better myself

What do you think about this software? I haven't seen many animations made with it, as an animator I think it has potential, with a really complete key animation I can see it working nice.

Traditional Drawings = Decent
Digital Drawings = Bad

I thought that traditional shit is supposed to transfer over to digital. Yet, my digital drawings are completely trash compared to my digital drawings.

Hello /ic/, first time posting here, so don't bully because I don't know culture of this board.

My father really like antiquities, and he left some behind (he isn't dead, he moved out)

I have this spooky thing.

I want to get rid of it, I can't sleep because of it.
I don't believe in ghosts and shit, so it's not prolly "haunted".
But I don't want it. (I should prolly add, that I am little schizo)

But I don't want to lose any opportunity.
I already asked some people, and I could make some € out of it.
So I am here to confirm stuff.
What do you think ?

Before critique, /r/ sucks unless you want boobage...

I recently broke my hard drive on my Lappy, and my Photoshop Elements 3.0 broke (Its old, but I like how it smooths the texture).

I'm in need of a new software/possible legal download to work with, .gimp is a laughable hackjob, and cant figure out how to get my toolbars back on screen after it glitched out..

Pic related, what I was working on when the lappy broke.. Only have a thumbnail size saved, was going to be a 7 foot x 5 foot ish tapestry.

kek its obvious you just watched the sinix video man. makes the problems quite a bit more obvious:

-paint away the lineart. seriously. the red and the blue clash, badly.
-work on your brush strokes/smoothing. right now it looks really smudgy. maybe some hard edge brush + airbrush in some parts would help.
-id recommend you to study the facial area more, from whatever reference you use.

good luck anon.

It's hard to say that there's a coherent art style. You have everyone from Penny Arcade to Ruan Jia doing the artwork.

The new expansions have moved into a higher quality standard and look good, most of the time, without losing their charm. Sometimes it goes overboard with the rendering, contrast Medivh versus Reno Jackson. I personally prefer the latter.

When it's done right it's really charming and organic, and of course fun to play. The charge cards depict the minions running, for instance.. It prefer it to any other card art and hope to make something for it one day. Magic simply looks good but feels kinda photobashy and samey lately. It has the benefit of old age though and in that sense is a mammoth that no other card game can compete with.

What skill(s) am I trying to improve by drawing from observation as realistically as possible? I want to exclusively draw stylized comics and cartoons, and I understand those ideas do come from life, but what value does realism give me?

Pic related is a good example of observational drawing. Why would I ever want to draw a pencil sharpener to this level of detail? What skill am I practicing by doing this?

As a comparison why wouldn't I do observational drawing like this pic instead?

It breaks down ideas into forms like spheres and cylinders. This is much more valuable for exaggerating cartoons & comics, but it also captures the likeness of the real thing. Isn't this a superior use of drawing time if I'm going to do observational work?

Not looking for memes or bantz just want honest feedback from other artists. Again my focus is comics/cartoons only so I never really want to be "that good" at realism. Maybe one day. But when first starting what value would I get from taking observational drawings to such a finely polished level, rather than doing construction-style art from observation?
>>
>Pic related is a good example of observational drawing.
It isn't though. It's a tacky looking photo-copy

It seems like you have a shallow understanding of what drawing and art in general entails.

Go ahead and start drawing some cartoons, you'll find that you can't get very far drawing from purely imagination, but sometimes it takes hitting that block to truely see the merit in other methods.

Or I guess, you could just stagnate and/or give up

>from purely imagination
You can draw from life but not do realism. The cat picture is a good example. Or what about this pic from Glen Keane?

Not very detailed but didn't stop that guy from working as a pro animator.

Nobody said anything about JUST drawing from imagination. Where was this stated?

I understand the value of drawing from life and observing life. Already good, we're on the same page. It needs to be done.

What I'm asking about is realistic observational drawing with perfect proportions & finely rendered shadows. Why is that valuable for comics or cartooning? What skills are learned through extremely accurate observational drawing that carry over to construction-based cartoons(ie. Star Butterfly is a bunch of spheres and cylinders; how does realism help me do that?)

I don't even know what to do with this. I want to involve meta knight and Dedede in the background somehow. I want to make zero2 stand out more on the bottom. What kind of colors should I select?

Learning composition will help you a lot. But the easiest way to make 02 stand out would be adding a darker background.
>>
>>3116735
Consider this picture here; although I recall a better example somewhere. Consider the placement of the characters and their poses, not the style. The colors also used help the characters pop especially the villean. I hope you still see this and find assistance in this!

>Dunning kruger
Is it just a meme or is for real? If the latter, how do we know if we got Dunning Kruger syndrome? How do we prevent from catching it, and what is the remedy for this disability?
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
It's not a disability, it's just perceiving yourself to be better at something than you actually are. As long as you realizie that you aren't as great as you think you are and start to set realistic goals accordingly, you can start improving for reals.
>>
>>3116250
It's goes to the other side too, perceiving yourself as not good enough, the typical "I just don't have what it takes!" or "I-I don't have talent!"
>>
>>3116247
the thing about it is though is that it's only about estimating your ability,

so dunning-kruger would be,

'michelangelo's david eh? i've been doing sculpture for 3 weeks now and i think i could pull that off with maybe...2 months more training'

[in 2 months]
'bernini's the rape of proserpina eh? holy shit i will never ever get to that level'

in 2 months he has learned enough about sculpture to understand his own level, you see?

it doesn't mean out sculptor friend can't get better at sculptor or anything, just that he might say some dumb shit.

and it certainly isn't like a delusional thing where you hallucinate that you're art looks better than it does.

im realizing that theres an abundance of visual media out there on the net, and artists need to specialize.

so anons. assuming youre still grinding your fundies, what are you planning to specialize in? Where do you want to work? What do you want to fill your portfolio in?
And anons that already found work, what do you intend to make of your skills? What kind of legacy do you intend to leave behind? What do you want your 60 dollar artbook to be filled with?

If its anything like ilya's artbook then kys
4 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
I would love to specialize in cartoon animation specialize more in the anime ish area something like what YouTubers would produce for example speedosausage.
>>
Well, theres entertainment everywhere and practically everyone has access to it. Fundies is just a daily exercise that all artists are suppossed to do, like eating right or working out. As far as art and work, its completely unrealistic to expect a good paycheck as a upcoming artist. you have to like creating art before and do it for fun without ever expecting to get paid (unless your hella good or already famous)

I want to work for myself in freelance so that i wont have to deal with bosses anymore and ill have the freedom to make my own hours doing something that i do anyways. its like if you got paid to play video games.
