I don't even know what to do with this. I want to involve meta knight and Dedede in the background somehow. I want to make zero2 stand out more on the bottom. What kind of colors should I select?

Learning composition will help you a lot. But the easiest way to make 02 stand out would be adding a darker background.

Consider this picture here; although I recall a better example somewhere. Consider the placement of the characters and their poses, not the style. The colors also used help the characters pop especially the villean. I hope you still see this and find assistance in this!
