Will learning to draw help me visualize literature better?
>>3124340
No and yes.
Everything that builds a visual library - so not drawing per se.
Looking at pictures, learning about history, museums, tools, watching movies, ...
For example, by seeing a trebuchet meme you will be better able to envision a scene in a book that mentions a trebuchet.
For example2, this caterpillar gives you visual library elements next time a monster is described in a book.
The point is to be exposed to as much as possible in the world. If you only draw hands for a year, your visual library is going to be WORSE, not better.
>>3124340
Not necessarily learning to draw, but exposure to visual images and experiences will be the reference that you use in order to grasp ideas better. This anon >>3124343 is right.
That said. You like CM and Blood Meridian? This is something I drew years ago when I was just starting out with putting comics together. Enjoy.

Why is acrylic looked down upon when compared with oil painting?
>>3123574
Good oil paints contains much more pigment than acrylic paints which makes them more expensive. This confers more status to oil paints. Acrylic paint also has much more commercial origins and a shorter history than oil paint. So basically, acrylic paints are oftentimes more associated with commercial art while oil paints with fine art.

What about gouche?
Does anyone know of any solid routines or courses to follow that will significantly improves ones drawing ability in general? It seems I know all the methods but have a hard time balancing them in practice to see a well rounded improvement.
>drawing ability in general
That's so vague. Honestly, just post your work explain your goal within said piece.
Draw something from a ref that you know will take you at least 3 hours.

Here are some quick sketches I did today. As you can see, there's some knowledge there but there's also a good number of mistakes. Obviously the perspective is off on one, the antomy is screwy in a few places, and even being able to draw figures decently at times I still don't know much on scenery and the likes, so I just want to improve my overall draftsman ship but I don't have any direction. I've read just about every art book out there that's decent and thrown around here and I think the big issue is I don't have a solid "workout routine" so to speak.
Post the best sketches/paintings on ic that you've seen
Someone post it.

yes you got skill.

i need a list of artist that pertain to one of the formal elements in the picture to then research and create a piece that shows clear influences from that artist

/ic/ will disagree with this.
>Until you can draw an accurate portrait of someone, you don’t know how to draw.
>Study closely the work of the Old Masters.
>Stop making art that originates only from your own imagination.
>On any given day, always be in the middle of reading a book. When you finish one, start the next. Fiction, nonfiction, biographies, autobiographies, history, science, psychology, or how to build a kite. Anything but go easy on the comic books.
>Fill up a sketchbook every month with pen or pencil drawings of the world around you, not from your imagination.
>No video games, either.
>Listen to classical music and jazz. If you are unable to appreciate it at least as much as contemporary music, you lack the sensitivity to develop into an artist of any real depth.
>>3123172
I mostly agree. About videogames though, they can be helpful, just don't make it your only source of ideas.
I disagree with the music part, or at least no opinion on it.
>>3123174
Videogames aren't really good. They're less nuanced than older mediums like literature and film because the majority of video games have black-and-white morality. Not to mention that they're simplified. Even if you do play competitive shooters R6:Siege and CS:GO, you're fucked over by poor netcode due to the large userbase. Let's not forget that they try to hook you into gambling by buying lockboxes and skins.
They do have good artists, but that's just it.

Stop symbol drawing--learn and practice anatomy. Stop chicken scratching, push your values--blackest blacks whitest whites (but down concern yourself with value much until your line art is where it should be.
If you can't figure out how to do these things read the sticky.

I drew my friend today with his own tools. He turned out more chubby than he actually is and there is something wrong with his skull's shape but I don't really draw like ever. I made the sketch when he was watching YouTube on his phone and then I finished it with fineliners. Do I have potential? Non Instagramish photo in second post
any feedback whatsoever?

Hey everyone, I made this artwork of goku, it took me 10 minutes to draw. How would you rate it and do you like it? Any suggestions to improve it would be appreciated, thanks in advance.
>>3123988
It'd take more time to write a critique than you used for your drawing. My suggestion is to fuck off or post in one of the draw threads.

Does anyone else not understand the hype behind this painting
due to it being so ubiquitous, i think its hard to understand its nuances.
come back to it later in life and see if you see its gravity. i love it once thought it was a beautiful thing that it was universally loved, but now understand why people might not like it; do to it being saturated by pop culture.
>>3120757
The paint strokes give us feeling of high tension in this painting, furthermore, this turns what would be realistic rendition of same city and sky into something more than just that
>>3120757
I don't know about hype, but the reason it is a notable piece is because of the time period it was created in. When I look at paintings that revolutionized the art world they were ground breaking. 1434, Jan van Eyck. The Arnolfini Portrait is an example.
Hey /ic/ I'm in a bit of a situation, I'll explain but I'm really not sure what to do.
>doing an illustration course at uni (I love debt)
>for a week project we had to collab with a random member in the class
>decided to work with this girl because I admired her style and thought it would work well for what I had in mind
>decided to create a short animated illustrative piece (not full animation but just more of a time lapse of a narrative in images)
>it was a success, the tutors were impressed
>head of our course got in contact with us both the create an animated music video for a band who he was friends with
>seeing this as an opportunity we said yes, though I was a little hesitant because I wasn't an animator and I've barely had any experience in that field, but I was willing to give it a shot
>my job was to create the storyboards, paint the environments and animate the scenes, her job was to paint the characters and produce the line work for objects in the scenes, this was fine as we were set to do what we were best at
>it started off well and content was animated at a steady pace, but slowly my partner started producing content slower and slower especially as we went home for the summer
>this is when the problems started really arising
>the characters where done shoddily compared to what she normally produced, it's ended up with me having to take each character and repaint/reline them then divide them up for animation
>I eventually asked her if they can be done in a better quality, they go up in quality but are just as slow

>head of year starts to worry about the project, he begins emailing us constantly
>each time I have to apologize and explain that there's been a slow down due to bullshit reasons, I don't want to place blame on anyone as it was both at our fault
>contact becomes slow with partner and I start to panic because I feel like I'm letting down myself and it's giving bad representation on myself
>partner looses her digital pen, this fucks me up even hard because now I have to paint them and divide them up myself
>this puts more stress on me and adds to the panic
>she apologizes and tells me she feels really bad, but I play it off and say it's fine just produce what you can and get it to me
>no content or contact from her in weeks
>don't want to keep pressing her for work, but I know it's the only way things are gonna get done
>we keep loosing big opportunities my head of tutor has offered because it should of been done by now, and he had some huge connections he wanted pass it along too
>it's feels like a knife in the chest each time
>afraid that if I contact our commissioner (head of year) and explain this to him it'll just look like I'm trying to place the blame on her
Please help me /ic/, this is fucking me up badly and this is my first commission for someone and it's done me so much damage, I don't want to give up but I can't go any further if she doesn't produce anything for me to work with. We're about half way through the thing and it looks averagely awful, I feel like I've blown the biggest shot I'll ever had.
tell her it's no big deal if she can't keep up due to personal reasons. Ask her to help you explain so it doesn't look like you're lying. If she's a reasonable person she'll help you.
>>3116394
ah it slipped me you can't contact her. Rip. Try explaining it anyway, I don't think they'll think you're lying since this is kinda common.
