Draw your off-hand thread!

That's right - if you are right handed, draw your left hand and vice versa. Your left hand is always with you lying around there useless so draw it. You can also repeat the process for few days and post progression. This is the first one I did - not so good, but I know it's going to improve gradually.

This does improve both your still life perception and your hand drawing skills also!

The fist seems little small, maybe you have small hands or your could train your eye to catch measures and distances better. Try to really focus when you draw from still life, like shut everything out and just stare your hand and the paper back and forth. Maybe do these studies twice a day for couple weeks and see if you improve! This is one of the easiest exercises to do.

Awhile back I made a post regarding oil paint and what kind of paint and what kind of books i should check out to learn how to oil paint. I believe anyone can br a great artist/painter if they actually out their determination and will into it and ultimately trial and error is a big thing when you are starting something new. I dropped out of junior college where i was studying art (Well i just stopped going cause i didn't have money and it was a drag) because they weren't really teaching me things that I didn't know rather things that already made sense to me. Anyway I did a painting for someone as a wedding gift and I've never done an oil painting but I decided this could be fun and a learning experience. (I was kind if drunk since I was at a bar when this happened). I had about 5 months to do it but I didn't start till the 3rd or so. This was my 4th attempt at a oil painting. I also have a couple photos of my first attempts.

Tldr trial and error is the best way to learn how to paint, well for me.

Not bad for a beginner. But your drawing suffers, his chin :( the painting is better than where his chin bleeds into his neck.
Here, you have value, simple in the face, and simpler in shirt and background, broad color. There isn't any complex color, which perhaps you will improve on later.
The hair looks too flat, it would be better with a composite dark (some blue in there).
The composition is satisfyingly traditional.

Sure, show your earlier attempts?
>>
>>2292561
It's okay. Looks like you can control the oils, but now it's a matter of making good decisions in the painting. Right now it looks like you just copied a photo, mistakes and all. Like the colours look like a photo (not in a good way), his teeth look like you cut it out of a magazine of a different person and pasted it in, his eyes look dead, the whole thing feels flat, the edgework is poor etc.

I would recommend picking a master portrait painter, finding a hi-res image of theirs, and doing a master copy. Do this often. Sargent, Velazquez or Van Dyck are all good choices, but you can pick someone else if you feel more of a connection to their work. It would be good for you to try painting from life too. If you can get a model or friend to sit and pose for a 3 hour portrait or something you will probably learn a lot.

I'm not good at sculpting anyway, and my painting skills are nonexistent (something I've been wanting to learn, though) so that is more or less out of the question.
Something related to art would be good, though.

Are you fucking kidding me. I don't even like western art. Anime is 100x better but even i can tell Will is 100x the artist of Jazza.

I use 2 Parker propelling pencils (one with hb, one with 2b), an eraser, sharpie, a Pilot V5 pen and a Pilot drawing pen along with a small drawing pad.

Three pencils, a rubber and a ruler.

And whatever paper I can get my hands on.
>>
These and a binder of printing paper are pretty much my go-to for the "not giving a fuck" drawings and the stuff I tend to have with me all the time.

For other standard stuff that I have a staedler 2mm lead holder and a pentel pocket brush pen. I want to invest in some copics but they cost a fucking arm and a leg.

Will I get better if I do 1 hour a day of practice /ic/?

Is it really essential to do 4 hours a day of practice?

I'm just a hobbyist and I want to get at a level where I can draw furry porn for $.
15 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
It's not essential.

You'll improve with 1 hour a day, just don't expect massive improvement.

Just study smart. Don't draw random shit doodles, make the most of your hour learning fundamental stuff. Do a little more on the weekend.

What I'd do in your place is do my research on the weekends - what I want to work on the for the week, read the books I need to read, watch some videos, find some refs, whatever. Draw a bit too. Then on weekdays, apply what you researched for an hour a day. Review and find what you need to work on each weekend.
>>
>>2291689

mileage is everything imo. 1 hour a day won't get you anywhere.

I want to get into drawing traditionally, but I don't know what I should buy to start out.

Which utensils, sketchbooks, and drawing boards are good for beginners?
30 posts and 11 images submitted.
>>
>>2289904
It literally doesn't matter as a beginner. You're perfectly fine with a regular pencil and a stack of printer paper.
>>
To start?

blank printer paper, bic pens, and the pencils you have laying around. A ruler wouldn't hurt to have as well. You seriously don't need an abundance of tools and what tools you will need depends on your goals and what kind of shit you want to produce.

Don't bother with a nice sketchbook, it'll just make you anxious to draw in it, and your first drawings will almost certainly be shit. Use supplies you don't mind wasting.

Aspiring pro thread? Aspiring pro thread.

Some thoughts I've recently had and bits of wisdom I've picked here and there.

'Games industry is exploding and although it is a very volatile and fast paced industry, as a whole it is doing amazing'. Talking to some concept artists however the root of the problem some of us might be experiencing became clear: Most of the explosive growth of the industry has been in the casual games sector. And not so much in the 'cool realistic triple AAA title' sector. However that's the jobs everyone is competing for, and catering their portfolio towards.

Additionally the demands in terms of technical skill for these casual games are incredibly low. As a result jobs are given on the basis of recommendations and 'he is friends with so-and-so'.

Another thing that worries me is the sort of 'talk from above' where people 5 years ago were saying 'If you aren't using photos you will stop getting any work very soon'. Now they are saying 'If you are not using 3d you will stop getting any work very soon'. Is this true? Maciej said on artcafe something something that only very few people still get work for pure painting. By very few he meant he can count them on one hand. How true is this? And if it's true... what is next? What will come after 3d? Is the concept artist of 2025 someone who can create an entirely animated inhabited world from scratch in 3d wearing an oculus rift, or something like that?

Getting a job in the video game industry is ALWAYS through recommendation first. Doesn't matter if it's AAA or indie. Recruiters ask employees if they know anyone first before even looking at any random resumes. It's very hard to just submit a resume and get a job.

Technical skill demand isn't low. People aren't dumb. They know if the art in their game is bad it's going to look like a shitty cheap game. You have to be good no matter what.

3d is extremely important. It drastically improves the speed and workflow of a concept artist. Even a basic program like sketchup makes a huge difference.

That being said, it isn't necessary to know 3d to be a concept artist. Whoever said that is a fucking idiot.

>concept artists 5 years for both indie and AAA projects. Console and Mobile.

Keep in mind that handheld devices are getting incredibly powerful compared to consoles and PC.
In 5 years time we will have medium tier phones able to render 720p visuals of a PS3, which has been the point where going "realistic" is aesthetically pleasing.

Games will remain casual, yes, but many of them will look like your generic AAA console tripe because the tech will get there. Which is what matters to you, the artist.
