As a general rule if people arent asking for criticism then dont expect them to react positively to it. Not every single artist out there cares about getting gud. Some are content with wallowing in their own shit for the rest of their lives and there is nothing you can do for them. Sure you can lead a horse to water but you cant make them drink.

This. Not everyone is trying to git gud. Even people talking about how they bought "Keys to Drawing" or reading up "How to Draw" by whoever, don't go on saying another book is better.

A better approach would have been, you showed your character, simply saying "I drew your character" and if they asked "How'd you do that?!" then there you go...

Probably. The linework is obviously brushpen, and the structures in the backgrounds are either watercolor or diluted ink. The color on Raiden is probably digital, though - the edges are crsiper than the ink or the backgrounds structures, and the way the colors graduate would be very hard if not impossible with watercolors.

I should add that the assignment is a charcoal drawing, so I can't rely on color to help. That's why I'm primarily focusing on general compositions.

You can move beyond angles and shapes and go for general focus points like faces, its what humans are best at interpreting and focusing on.

Personally whenever I see this piece my eye immediately darts towards the focal point of Ivan the Terrible's haunted eyes, and then quickly runs a S-pathway through his son's figure, from head to foot, leading to the end of the spear/scepter and following along its length until I see the blood.

Its a very nice composition.
