How do you think of good character designs?
I've been struggling with drawing from imagination and designing interesting characters. Nothing really comes to mind and I end up drawing the same stuff over and over.
Do you guys have any tips or anything for this problem?

you steal other peoples designs and call them your own

Read "The skillful huntsman", It may give you a prompt. Should be in the artbook thread.
Sorry for not giving a more useful answer, I only draw anime waifus.

Looks interesting! Thank you!
Going through /ic/ lately, something occurred to me that I'm sure has occurred to a lot of people. You get a lot of people throwing their two cents around, with advice pulling beginner artists in every direction, and they're all anonymous. We have no idea which ones are experienced artists, and which ones are just blind beginners leading the blind. Hearing the wrong advice early on can be pretty damaging to one's progress, especially at a stage where a person cannot discern good from bad. On other platforms, I'll always weigh a person's advice against the quality of their work.
So, if any of you are interested, I'd like you to post two things:
1. A single example of your work, hopefully something you're proud of.
2. Your advice for beginners - what they should read, what kind of exercises they should start off with, which of the greats to follow, etc. Tell us what worked for you.

I don't understand how you learn to draw and still develop a distinct style.
The books I got from the library just seem like I'm copying what I see, is that really helping?
>>2439729
Ok here is literally what style is, tell someone to draw a dog, a car, a girl. Whatever they draw without reference or any further description is their style. I'd go to my computer and I'd draw an American animation style bulldog with exaggerated front legs and I'd colour it loosely. Tada style. If you ask Kim jun gi he'd draw a Rottweiler in detail with a brush pen. Tada style. Get it?

It's the way you see interpret reality and use your tools. There are many different ways say to describe the form of the nose, and aslong as there's some design sense from reality then its usually gonna be good. Hair is random, people describe the randomness of hair in different ways, e.g their style. Everyone uses different tools and use them differently. E.g using brush pen instead of a normal pen, using sides of pencil more, pressing harder, etc..
>>2439729
when you really learn to DRAW, then you don't copy shit.
You grab your pen either wacom or a real one, sketch, construct and finish what you like to see and this is your style.
If you underlay "reference" under your drawing layer it's not the same as just doing what you want to.
Pls help me /ic/, I'm lost.
It's high time I started taking art seriously and I'm lost at where to start. I have some knowledge on anatomy and light and shadow, and my best works were just studies of still life and heads but it took me a long ass time to do these.
I want to git gud and make the most of my drawing time, there are no decent art schools in my country and I feel like I'm gonna waste years for nothing (there is classical painting but rich kids buy their way in and they only accept 15 students a year).
My dilemma is I don't know really where to begin, what to go balls deep into first and what areas require some prerequisite knowledge.
Now, I found this and it looks pretty dank to me, what do you think?
Can this be applied to landscape later on? I already downloaded some books too. I feel like a complete retard, I'm sure threads like these are common but I'm really lost..
tl;dr Where to begin? How to make the most out of my drawing time?
Learning by myself, pls halp!

I know that already. Been working for 3 weeks and I feel like I'm not doing it properly, I haven't learned much, I feel like I should make a plan and focus.
Does anyone have the Loomis/Death Note "Not Gonna Make It" picture?
Also /ic/ memes and OC thread I guess

Hey I posted that question. Neat.

Nice picture. Did you draw that from reference or immigration?
I like how it changes with music and the speed in the final part of the video.

Anyone know of any good software where you can view 3D muscles individually in high detail? help is appreciated.
Pic related.
Probably should add I'm stuck when it comes to drawing muscles like the pic attached which is why I'm asking.

Style looks nice. 8/10

You can only see the front side of her skirt. We should be able to see a little of the back side.
Her hair looks so cartoony it seems more like a hat. Try drawing normal human people hair, then drawing the cartoony bits on top.
The elbows are okay, but the knee really does make her look like a doll/mannequin. If that's what she is, good job, you nailed it, but if she's a human you should really tone it down a bit.
Her calves are garbage, especially her left calf. It looks like she has a broken tibia. Are you a leg man? It's much easier to draw body parts that arouse you. Try to get yourself aroused by looking at women's legs. It's either that or doing it the hard way: study and practice in a realistic style.
Her arms also need some serious anatomy checking. The distance between her shoulder and elbow should be about the same as the distance between her elbow and wrist. The arms are also too long in general. Stand up with your arms slack, and you'll find that your fingertips reach your thigh. She could touch her knees.
Generally, I like how you used only a few colors, but the white on the socks and her green eyes undermine that. Personally, I'd replace both with red. Her clothes grip her in a way that make it look like she's a human wearing them (except as mentioned above), so good job there.
As a character design, I wouldn't give a girl who fights with her fists a loose skirt unless you're intending to have some panty flashes (like Sakura from Street Fighter). I'd recommend considering hot pants, spats, or a tight skirt. Since her top is red with black accents, I'd make her skirt/shorts/whatever black with red accents. The hair going over her eye is a bit much unless she's actually one-eyed. Depth perception is important for a fist-fighter.
I was, however, immediately able to tell that she was a fist-fighter, and learned a little about her personality just from her expression.
Overall, the design has a lot of potential, but needs a lot of work too. 4/10.
Are there any sites similar to conceptart or even a more serious deviantart that have more focus on animation rather than concept art and illustration?
Bonus if it's geared towards currently enrolled students as well as professionals rather than hobbyists.
i need to know this too. /ic/ is too full of guys who call 3-frame sequences "animations"
>>2442247
This, not to mention one thread for all animation discussions is kind of stifling if that's the main reason you come to /ic/ so if there's an alternative I would love to know.

Do you think glitch art has any credibility? Or do you think it's more of a novelty, or that people just like it because of the vaporwave fad?

> Find the right color palette
> Already have linework done
Where do you go from there ? Do you apply color strictly from your palette and no other colors (Which means the lights and shadows are already in your chosen palette) or do you add light, highlights and shadow colors over your palette ?
How do you apply them on your subject ?
>>2444037

You throw it out and start fresh using just form. Maybe after you add lines, what the fuck are you doing, colouring?
Paint nigga.
>>2444096
Where do you start from ?
How do I paint realistically if I don't have models and props like the old illustrators had?
Most of the artists known to have worked from models had to get to a point in their art where it was good enough to be sold for large enough amounts of money that they could afford to hire models to pose for them. Don't believe the meme that artists only ever worked from models exclusively. Even looking at the picture you've posted you can see many artistic liberties taken with the photographs; a head turn here, placement of the feet or arms, and last but not least of which being that they're all in color.
tl;dr git gud fgt

What type of markers does /ic/ use/reccomend?
I bought a pretty big set of Prismacolors years ago, but I recently bought a set of greyscale Copics and like how they color and blend. Was thinking of investing in a colored set but was wondering what other comparable alternatives are out there, preferably lower priced but I'm willing to splurge if necessary.
Also, general marker discussion thread I guess.
Copics are the best that I've found as far as getting even coverage and avoiding that splotchy marker look, they blend really well too. I don't have a lot of them, but I like their small color fusion / blending trio 3-sets for quick sketches.
There are a lot of more reasonably priced alternatives depending on where you are in the world; W&N Brushmarkers (basically rebranded Letrasets), Neopiko, Chartpak, Spectrum Noir, etc. They're all decent and worth a try if you're not willing to pay up the ass for Copics.
I just hate how most of these alcohol markers absolutely destroy normal paper.
ive got myself the cool greys and warm greys set. all their refills. they are really go tonal studies, quick sketches ID drawings etc etc
cost wise, i think in the long term, they are worth it. with other alternatives they are not refill inks so you have to splash every now an then. but with copic-san one refill will fill your marker 15-13 times. and a refill cost £5 here. they are worth it i would say
Anyone have suggestions on the best paper to use with copics?
