Want to hear from you people with ADHD and or dyslexia. There’s a good chance this post will give you anal cancer. Fair warning.

TL:DR; Got ADHD? Tell me if/ how it affected your drawing progression.

Part 1
Aspirations for traditional style animation (think Avatar LAB, Samurai Jack, etc). Part of the skillset I’m working on is to be able to draw figures from any angle with little to no reference. Started drawing ~3 years ago, went hardcore about a year ago; 8+ hours each day, no videogames, no boyfriends, no bullshit distractions. Saved up enough to live on for a while without a job, long as I don’t get sick or the like.

Happy to just throw my ass in a chair and just draw, but I’m unsure if I’m absorbing it same as the rest. Self-doubt is par for the course; we all get it. And I know you’re all sick of the billion other threads of people all freaked out that their aren’t getting better fast enough. However because of the ADHD and dyslexia, I wonder if I have to tweek my study techniques some. There is always something playing in my head; a song, a looping movie quote, past conversations, that kind of shit. Ok, fine. Nothing can really be done about that, at least not without some professional medical intervention(aka lots of money). And yes I’m taking adderall.

I don’t want to end up in THAT category. “This drawing is really good for someone with mental retardation of whatever the fuck you have. To everyone with a functioning brain, it’s shit in a cup”. Playing Chariots of Fire while I win the special Olympics. Fuck that.

Part 2 Below. Yes, I know, part fucking 2.

Part 2
-Are you still improving at a decent rate despite having a lot of thoughts that have little if nothing to do with what you’re drawing during practise.
-Is just the act of drawing a shit ton enough to improve at least somewhat? Or is it pretty much time wasted as soon as you zone?
-What techniques are you using to stay present in the work?
-Do you think your progress is on par with the average practitioner?

I will. Suck. Your. Dick. If you can produce some relevant peer-reviewed articles on ADHD and drawing. All the articles I’ve seen have been pretty pathetics.

_You can stop reading here, as the rest is pretty incoherent. Or at least more so than the rest_

I am so sincerely sorry if this hasn’t made much sense. And also for how long it got, Christ. I’m just looking for assurances from other ADHD(ers?) that hard work is enough to get to godmode-skill. And yes, of course everyone is going to say focus is important. No shit. Not looking for a circlejerk, just want to get a reality check from from people who’ve run that mile.
Having a hard time conveying this without feeling like a whiny faggot. Thanks to those those victim culture twats, anything even close to asking about learning disabilities has everyone in the room rolling their eyes. Probably a ton of people reading through this shit right now thinking “ok we get it, you’re so quirky-random and self aware. You’re so meta, bra. Tell us more about your stereotypical adhd bullshit you tryhard faggot”.

And god knows I’m not interesting in being some inspirational story for young artists having overcome the adversities of mental whatever. Hell maybe ADHD gives me an advantage. I’ve never talked to any other artists who have that shit though, so I have no idea if I’m on the right track or not.

so people I’m studying for anatomy and faces are Vilppu, Scott Eaton, and David Finch. Attached images is sadly mine.

As a person with severe depression and reading that you committed yourself to this is incredible. There are countless consecutive days where I can't even look at my art supplies. Good on you for sticking with it, and good luck with your replies.

Drew a lot as a kid was considered prodigy. ADD helped me hyper focus on whatever was obsessed with at the time and block out teachers, parents etc and draw on everything and at times it was not appropriate. Life got shittier around 12 and gave up drawing since, trying to get back into it Currently and wish I hadn't let other things get in the way. Keep at it and don't lose it. Become as obsessed as you can with something and finish sketches if possible. Your ability to detail and sketch is probably superb but the rest is likely shit. Try focusing on the boring parts or foundation work/color blocking the most.

Hey /ic/,
I'm mentoring this guy who's a newbie in drawing and he asked me why he should draw on traditional media first when he can just do everything digitally (He even bought a fucking cintiq when I told him NOT to but hey, it's his money)

Any answers to his question? I can't quite find the right words to reply him :U

Simple.
You can't build a house if you don't know how to make a foundation. It's always better to learn the basics on the simplest format possible, because then you can apply those same basics to any piece of work, and just learn the new specific techniques that come with using varied mediums.
>>
>>2443213
He wants to only draw digitally, (which I find a really dumb thing to limit yourself to just 1 media) so any answers I might give him is just "Why don't I learn it digitally instead of figuring how to transfer it to digital media?"
>>
>>2443213
Exactly what I was going to say

I want to work in the animation industry. Doing graphic novels, working in places like Cartoon Network, Disney and networks like that. Right now im studying Graphic design cause is the closest thing my university has to an Art Career. Eventually once i get to finish college i will go to a Basic Art School and later to a French school or who knows maybe CalArts . Anyway I would love to get into Animation from the get go but i can't quit College, so I'm stuck in Graphic Design for now. I'm on the right path?

1. Start animating now "you only need sai/ps/flash/easytoon and huion tablet"

2. Do your research

>Want to learn animation
>Takes graphic design
>Am I on the right path guise?

Obviously you know the answer to that is no. Graphic design and animation are wildly different things.

Just start drawing. Quit college, you don't need it if you're not going to do graphic design moron, and i doubt those credits will transfer to calarts so you're wasting your time.

You could die tomorrow and all you'll have accomplished is wasting time at a college that doesn't have your program, learning skills for a medium that is vastly different from what you do. Stop.

Is permanoobs dying? I don't go there anymore but it still makes me kind of sad to see that community go down the drain. /ic/ is just /ic/, it's in a league of its own, hate it or love it.

I guess that's it for me then. Neither reddit nor fb feel right to me...

Where to go to get critique and a competitive collective environment?

So I want to get into the animation industry and become a character designer/visual development artist. I want to study at college but I'm not sure what the best route is. Should I take a course in animation, a course in art and design, a course in illustration, a course in graphic design? I feel animation is the most obvious one but will I be wasting my time learning Maya when I should really be developing my drawing an painting skills. However if I'm trying to get into animation my work will need to be of a certain standard and I feel colleges that offer art and design courses would look down upon animation style artwork
29 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
If you want to be a vis dev artist, study illustration with a course in animation; you'll basically never touch the animation itself. If you want to be a character designer, you should still study illustration, but an animation knowledge will be much more important because you'll need to understand what is a good design for animation. And do NOT learn animation with 3D.
>>
>>2436786
Thanks man. Do you have any recommendations on highly regarded animation courses and illustration courses?
>>
>>2436791
I don't know about illustration as much; I studied animation. I guess CalArts, RISD, SVA, the usual.

I can't make smooth looking lines to save my life.

Besides Illustrator, is there an art program that can make my pen strokes look smooth? I am using Manga Studio, and have stabilization set as high as it can go... but that doesn't get the job done.
21 posts and 4 images submitted.
>>
Paint tool sai has a good stabilizer. Looking at your drawing though it looks like you just need more practice. Im assuming you're using a tablet and those can take a long time to get use to. Just keep working at it.
>>
>>2442614
there are ways to make lines smoother besides stabilizer.
1) you could draw bigger and then scale it down for presentation. some line inconsistencies will be "discarded" if they weren't too drastic, cause when you scale down, you lose data.
2) don't connect your line (you make connect them later if you wish). it makes drawing confident strokes much easier, which brings me to
3) draw a sketch first. line quality comes down to confidence and when you're not sure what you're drawing or where to place lines, that slows down the process which makes the lines wobbly or just plain wrong.
>>
>>2442625
In response to suggestion number two; you might be able to see right down the middle of my image where my two lines connect. This is because I drew half, flipped the image, than did the other half.

I am more comfortable drawing down and to the left, it seems, so I try to do this as much as possible. How do you recommend connecting the two lines?

>>2442618
I am going to try paint tool sai as soon as possible. With Manga Studio, there is a brush called the "g-pen", which has more of a smoothing ability than the other default brushes. Is their an equivalent for paint tool sai?

I've been learning how to join and construct round forms for almost a year, but seeing no progress. I feel like I'm overcomplicating every piece of advice I get on how to join shapes together.

Is there an easier way for me to understand how I can draw two simple forms together? Pic related, the roundness and volume of the character is what I'm trying to go for.
