>Have you not heard of that madman who lit a lantern in the bright morning hours, ran to the market place, and cried incessantly: "I seek God! I seek God!" -- As many of those who did not believe in God were standing around just then, he provoked much laughter. Has he got lost? asked one. Did he lose his way like a child? asked another. Or is he hiding? Is he afraid of us? Has he gone on a voyage? emigrated? -- Thus they yelled and laughed

>The madman jumped into their midst and pierced them with his eyes "Whither is God?" he cried; "I will tell you. We have killed him -- you and I. All of us are his murderers. But how did we do this? How could we drink up the sea? Who gave us the sponge to wipe away the entire horizon? What were we doing when we unchained this earth from its sun? Whither is it moving now? Whither are we moving? Away from all suns? Are we not plunging continually? Backward, sideward, forward, in all directions? Is there still any up or down? Are we not straying, as through an infinite nothing? Do we not feel the breath of empty space? Has it not become colder? Is not night continually closing in on us? Do we not need to light lanterns in the morning? Do we hear nothing as yet of the noise of the gravediggers who are burying God? Do we smell nothing as yet of the divine decomposition? Gods, too, decompose. God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him

>How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet owned has bled to death under our knives: who will wipe this blood off us? What water is there for us to clean ourselves? What festivals of atonement, what sacred games shall we have to invent? Is not the greatness of this deed too great for us? Must we ourselves not become gods simply to appear worthy of it? There has never been a greater deed; and whoever is born after us - for the sake of this deed he will belong to a higher history than all history hitherto

Many Holocaust survivors such as Primo Levi assert in their immediate postwar memoirs that most of the good, integrated European Jews were killed during the Holocaust, and that those who survived were those who were willing to keep their heads down and accept the torture of their friends and family, or who were otherwise extremely lucky. That the ones who survived were willing to toss other people under the bus and only thought of their own survival, something he himself struggles with greatly as he feels immensely guilty over his actions during his imprisonment. Do you think this is true? Do you think the Nazis paradoxically killed the best, most integrated Jews, and left mostly the selfish (barring the lucky ones) to survive?

>>2432342
Your right about them murdering most of the integrated jews (I.e most Jews in europe) but the rest of what you said is just projection
>>
>>2432351

No, I'm doing research on Holocaust survivors and it's an interesting theme between quite a few of them. There's a lot of self-loathing projection there, of course, but I do wonder if the really kind-hearted people were the first to die while the more hardnosed, self-focused people survived in those conditions.
>>
>>2432351
I wouldn't call it projection. I've read what is probably an absurd amount of Holocaust memoirs, as well as journals and diaries left behind by people who ended up dying, and the concept definitely shows up more than once, although I would disagree with the premise that the only survivors were those that tossed people under the bus or otherwise ignored their humanity. Perhaps Levi and others like him (the author for This Way for the Gas, for instance) wanted to project that as being more universal because of their own guilt and self-loathing about surviving, especially in regards to their own actions towards others.

In cases where life or death meant the difference between being willing to steal other people's food or supplies, then the person who is willing to do that is more likely to survive. Or at least, survive for longer.

Is the colossus of Rhodes real, or just something presumed to have been real because it's mentioned in some story somewhere?

I did a quick look through google scholar, any text that mentions it outside of a pop culture reference is from before 1960.

Not a single remain or ruin exists of it, no two accounts of it are the same from how big it was, to what it was made of, to what it looked like, and yet everyone accepts it as fact. Why?
And if it was real can somebody please show me the evidence for it or do I just have to accept that a few dudes in the past wrote about it so it had to have been real? I understand that theres certain things in history that we do take historical accounts as they only evidence but they generally arent for some random structure that varies in shape, form and size depending on account.

You're assuming there was only one Collosus, and that any free standing construction like that would last any meaningful amount of time in an area as tectonically active as greece.

You're also overlooking the way that it's fairly unlikely any greek scholars got as far south as Rhodesia to see it in the first place.

(so yeah, it probably didn't exist, or if it did exist, it was just a slightly larger than usual statue more than the harbour straddling nudist fucker it's usually depicted as)

So I actually decided to poke around /lit/'s cycle of meme reactionaries, and I must say de Maistre, in particular, is interesting. He seems to rely at least slightly less on magical thinking than the others that /lit/ likes to mention.

Since /his/ is supposed to be the philosophy board, I'll ask here: where to start? What's the work of his to begin with, and who's a good translator? I'm told that "Considerations on France" is one of his more seminal works.

Bump for interest.

these works are rarely read anymore because French people are more interestd in motor scooter affairs and Charlie Hebdo than their historical outlook on government.
>>
>>2431931
The cambridge edition is good, it's with an intro by Issiah Berlin(popularized Maistre in a negative light, but you know intentions don't turn out the way they want). Keep in in mind it's a pamphlet, so the language is more poetry than actual discourse. St Petersburg Dialogues are his magnum opus, which you can read at any time. His book about Rousseau is literally shitposting with style, but you'd have read Social Contract to fully find it funny.
>>
>>2431931
St. Petersburg diaries is fantastic for multiple reasons, not only for the OG reactionary philosophy but also because it's a great account of someone living in the Russian imperial court douring the Napoleonic wars. Tolstoy used it as a source material for War and Peace, for example.

So when the Nazis were captured, they conducted IQ tests on their top leaders.

The IQs of 21 defendants in the Nuremberg trials were measured in 1945 by Gustave Gilbert, an American psychologist who studied the prisoners extensively. The test used was the Wechsler-Bellevue (in German). The scores were as follows:

[Pic related]

The average IQ of them is 128, just short of two standard deviations above the mean of 100. To put it into perspective two standard deviations below the mean of 100 would be the average of a country like Angola or Sudan(Africa). None of these men had below average intelligence. Depending on the scaling the majority were considered geniuses or near geniuses.

I find it difficult to believe that these IQs were overestimated. IQ tests leave relatively little room for biased interpretation on the part of the psychologist (of course blatant dishonesty is always possible), besides, Gilbert was Jewish and if anything biased against the Nuremberg defendants.

Needless to say, it would have been possible for the defendants to intentionally get lower results, but unless the test was poorly administered and they managed to cheat, it was impossible for them to fake a higher IQ. If anything, they might have had a slight incentive to fake a very low IQ, which might have been construed as an extenuating circumstance, but none of them tried that obviously.

rapier and the other thrusting swords like sideswords and estocs are basically the best sword by almost any metric, why are they considered effeminate or weak and used mostly by women in media and entertainment?
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
sideswords are cut and thrust swords
rapiers can cut and thrust, but are more specialized for thrusting
estocs have a triangular cross section and are basically like smaller lances...they cannot cut

rapiers are not the best swords by almost any metric, but they were very good for unarmored duels

People love to indulge their base instincts, even self-described intellectuals. Also we are in the midst of a raging culture war so it is to be expected. Always remember that this website has ballooned with altrightists since the election frenzy, they are now constantly spilling out into the other boards with their hateful ideology. They only use history as a way to discover thousand year old grudges that they can conveniently adopt into their demented worldview.

How did the US and the UK go from bitter enemies to close allies?
9 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>2430877
Common language/economjc/familial ties that made it easy for each country to have a dialogue with one another. Plus the US had nothing to gain from antagonizing Britain.
>>
>>2430877

Because quite honestly, they're natural allies. You have similarities of language and culture, and quite a few converging interests, especially where the Atlantic ocean was concerned, both countries really wanted things kept quiet so that trade could flourish.

Once you got over the initial issues stemming from American independence and a few territorial disputes in North America, you're pretty much set.
>>
>>2430877

We were never really 'bitter enemies.' Just lads that had some disagreements that were ultimately solved mostly with banter.

Add to this our shared language, relatively similar governmental systems, similarities in both our legal systems, and being far more capitalism-oriented in economics than most other contemporary cunts, while being far enough away from each others' spheres of influence to not cause lasting tension.

There was no reason why we wouldn't have eventually turned into allies of convenience at the very least.

The Lady of Pain, a unkillable godlike entity that can flay the skin off a man with her shadow, teleport you into the sun on a whim or trap you in an interdimensional realm, visits /his/ and decrees to you via one of her mediums the follow edicts:

>None shall worship me
>there will be only 15 philosophical schools in /his/ or the lady of pain will get rid of all of them
>you must arrange amongst yourselves, which 15 those are
>each of the 15 must be able to carry out a single significant function of a small city state e.g. burying the dead, running prisons/gallows, hospitals, policing the city, running courts, manufacturing, arts, public entertainment, waste disposal, etc, and any function one philosophical school handles cannot be handled by another

So what happens /his/? Who are the 15, and what does each do within the city state of /his/?
