That color coding of society was developed in the modern era in the West. Before everyone in Europe was divided according to their nationalities or local ethnic identities.
The Chinese always distinguished themselves from other East Asians.
Hunter-gatherer San peoples distinguish themselves as yellow as opposed to other African peoples who are called black. Russians on the Altaic steppes are apt to call Kazakhs dark.
Only in cases where the difference is more pronounced like the Japanese in New Guinea does the color distinction take place and even they at one time might have referred to the Ainu as black also (they did call them 'spiders'). Other wise what most often happened was that people referred to each other by their tribal names or called outsiders barbarians.

Yes I think Mongolia population was about 500 thousand people(it has 2.8 million in 2016). They invaded coountries with the help of other nomadic peoples from the steppe, so the combined population of all the people living in the Mongolian empire that took part in the invasions was probably much bigger, maybe around 2 million people. But it's still much less than the population of the countries that they invaded.

2) The Mongols were very meritocratic and after they'd conquered new lands they would pick out from the people they'd just fought against the ones who possessed skills that were useful to them and promoted them to generals and advisors.
