Why is Aristotelianism so superior to modern reductionism?
24 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>2429856
Because it's been dressed up by historic mystique and seems interesting because it was written by a society you are not part of. It is not intrinsically better, and the focus on Aristotle actively promotes a blind acceptance of authority. Also, while Aristotle's ideas have a great deal of value for the practices they proposed, and I personally enjoy them and think they can be learned from, modern science is usually much more verifiable than many of the claims of Aristotle, and truth is ultimately the aim of science. I also don't think that kind of image corresponds to the style of discourse Aristotle would have appreciated.

Could someone give me a quick rundown of the Shia vs. Sunni controversy? As far as I understand it Ali is considered to be the legimate succesor of Mohamed and Abu Bakr is considered legitimate by the Sunni's. But then I don't understand how Ali became the fifth Caliph by Sunni standards.
Is there anyone with the knowledge about early Islamic politics to explain this?

>As far as I understand it Ali is considered to be the legimate succesor of Mohamed and Abu Bakr is considered legitimate by the Sunni's.

That's basically what started it.

>But then I don't understand how Ali became the fifth Caliph by Sunni standards.

He was the fourth. He was the only remaining choice.

ITT: the year is 1916 the month is may and the French and English have just finished there plan of cutting up the Ottoman Empire for there future exploitation. You with all the current knowledge you have of the Middle East and the problems caused by these borders tell them about all the shit they cause. What is your proposed border solution to the post OTTOMAN problem?

>>
Add more land to the empire because it was the only thing keeping the savages from chimping out.
>>
Egypt and north sudan

Arabia and the levant

Turkey and the southern caucuses

Persia gets Baghdad and kurdistan

Dont make isreal. The jews have literally always sucked when they had a state, and been MVP minority throughout all of history without a state.

Would that be westphalian enough?

It's complicated. On one hand he triggered the Counter reformation which arguably saved Catholicism. On the other hand his rebellion caused death and divide to sweep Europe and cause centuries of strife.

How can there be so many (conflicting) ethnicities so densely packed together?
How is one ethnicity different from the other if they're so close together?
Why did they never conglomerate into larger groups?

1) Human genetic and cultural diversity

2) Genetics, culture, linguistics, history.

3) Most had only been in their given area for a few hundred years before European contact. A lack of large scale economies and writing (except in the northwestern most portions) prevented any joining of forces.

But how did individual languages and genetic bloodlines develop so close together without intermixing?
Did they literally never leave their villages?

Tell me about Sassanids, what did they call themselves? What was interesting about them? Were they wealthy and were their armies competent?
25 posts and 6 images submitted.
>>
>>2428336
Sassanian Empire was Persian, a continuation of Achaemenid ethos.

They called themselves "Iran-Shahr", also known as "Ērān-shahr". Ērān is the literal pronunciation of Iran. Since Sassanian times, Iranians refer to Iran by the same name. "Iran-shahr" roughly translates to "Land of the Aryans".

They were interesting because they codified Zoroastrian beliefs and were a rival of Rome. They were a theocratic monarchy though and tended to suppress unorthodox thought, though some progressive kings such as Khosrow I took measures to prevent this. The Academy of Gondishapur is considered the first hospital system and it also served as the foundation for "House of Baghdad".

Given how much was destroyed in Arab and Mongol invasions, we can only infer wealth. Based off architecture, I would say they were wealthy. They were competent and worthy rivals of Rome.

Daily reminder that economics books which look at the progression of humanity from an inherently non-aggressive non-Darwinian stance are not only more realistic, but ultimately sending a better message for the organization.

there is no good in this world that isn't enforced, you are not genuinely good unless you are an aggressive darwinist

georgism a shit, all capital should be marketized
>>
>>2427449
Again, it's not realistic though. Life isn't inherently aggressive. That's not even really the point I was trying to make but if you view life as you wealth being inherently justified in letting people starve, not only is that cruel from a sociological standpoint but it doesn't make sense.
