Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™
Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

First for quad core t420 a best
>mom wanted one of those tablet/"laptop" hybrid to replace her old one
>ordered one a couple weeks ago, shit was already broken
>she just ordered a T420
>>56561754
if she broke it in 2 weeks then she'll find a way to break a t420
So I've been searching for a good controller to use for playing some retro video games on the train, but it seems like pretty much everything on the market is absolute shite.
Looking for something small enough to put in a pocket or a bag, but big enough for large hands.
Picrelated (iPEGA PG-9017S) is the best I could find, but is there anything else?
>>56561535
I honestly have the exact thing in pic related, and it kicked ass right up until the plastic on the hinge broke. I'd buy another for sure.
Make a thread on /v/ though, since /g/ sucks for stuff like this.

I was actually jacking off to porn with my comfy ipad set up in the bathroom
only to get said popup
what business is it of the browser?
>>56561356
Once I asked the mozilla devs (over irc) to add in a feature that makes it so that some bookmark folders aren't indexed by the address bar. They just laughed at me and said I was asking because porn.
The lousy thing is, I actually wasn't asking about porn. I tend to archive articles, research papers, and so on for reference or reading later. Now I just use pocket but still browser devs are jerks.
Digital audio means DRM audio
For years the entertainment industry has decried what they call the "analog loophole" of headphone jacks, and now we’re making their dreams come true by closing it.
Restricting audio output to a purely digital connection means that music publishers and streaming companies can start to insist on digital copyright enforcement mechanisms. We moved our video systems to HDMI and got HDCP, remember? Copyright enforcement technology never stops piracy and always hurts the people who most rely on legal fair use, but you can bet the music industry is going to start cracking down on "unauthorized" playback and recording devices anyway... you will rue the day Apple decided to make the iPhone another 1mm thinner the instant you get a "playback device not supported" message.

I buy/repair a lot of equipment that I prefer to sell locally (fuck ebay fees). I price my items very reasonably because I hate wasting time negotiating. A lot of people often open conversation with "why are you selling it" or "what's wrong with it." Those same people seem skeptical when I tell them I don't have a need for it and buy/sell/repair electronics as side income (even as a certified technician). I have lost sales because of dumb people suspecting it must be stolen, that I'm hiding problems, or just have bad stigma surrounding something that's been repaired.
What is a good way to respond to questions like "why so cheap" or "why are you selling" without putting people off?
>>56561006
'I want to make money'
>>56561006
"I just upgraded"
Usually works for me

>What is a good way to respond to questions like "why so cheap" or "why are you selling" without putting people off?
"This is what I believe it is worth."
"It is from an old build and is thus used, depreciating the value."
"You want the fucking part or not? Don't waste my time."
What are some good resources for learning programming languages in-depth, like being able to follow it and understand what it means?
I've dabbled a bit in Java, C#, and C++ (fucking favorite), and I have a basic idea of whats happening when I write basic programs, but I wanna know the details, like what everything is and how it works.
Anyone have any resources where I can discover this witchery?

What is the best laptop in regards to battery life?
I need to use one for university but I don't want to be one of those cucks who brings extension cords to class for a shitty $400 Acer. I just want something that can provide 8 hours of battery life and isn't too heavy.
you arent going to get an honest decisive answer here
you posted a macbook air so you're learning in that direction
it'll be one of the ones on the list
just get it and enjoy your purchase
Thinkpad x260 it has about 15h on gnooloonix
I don't know about other thinkpads like the olders x220 but maybe they have decent battery life too
Charge your shit before hand and get a 9 cell or larger battery.
How many people here use console web browsers? What worthwhile websites are still usable?
>>56560507
Yes, I use EWW which is built into emacs.
There's also w3m, however it's fucking sourceforge based and for about 2 years that site was serving malware https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9623876 and had numerous security problems with tampered open source projects, and essentially blacklisted completely by the entire internet so I consider it a dead project until they move somewhere else (even though now apparently sourceforge "apologized" after being sold May 2016).
Lynx has some serious problems, mainly it's maintainers fill it with exploitable bugs. Links, is still OK though.
Is this just for fun? Or is there some benefit or something to using a console web browser?

About to buy a Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 Pro. Where should I buy one, and should I buy one that's unopened or opened already?
i bought mine at iBuyGou, you have repair centers in Europe (Poland, Slovakia and forgot where), can buy 2 year warranty for $5 and buy "VAT protection" so if customs catch you they give your money back.
if youre from america then i dont care/dont give a fuck buy iphone like everybody else there i guess.
Also, I'm from the US and currently use an iPhone 6 Plus w/ AT&T. I have no idea where to get this chinkshit or what specific model to get.
I just got one from alieexpress have it for a week already and everything is fine I paid like 130$ highly recommend this
Does your ISP support IPV6?

Rogers supports IPv6.
But, if you turn off the router function of the modem they give you and use it just as a modem, you don't get IPv6.
Verizon shill here. I won't pass out like last time.
I am a Solution Specialist, or "SALESMAN" if you prefer to read between the lines. I'll answer questions that to not directly endanger my identify.
iPhones are launching soon but the turnout is only about average. Nothing to blow your skirts up. The $650 credit deal is confusing even to us. No one can give us an exact answer on how it works. It just does.
Note 7's are a fucking mess. You can technically return it without any restock fee for any phone and then swap back to the new immolation free Note 7's when they come out. This is a massive fucking headache for us and we nearly ran the Samsung rep out of the store because this shit is unorganized and time consuming.
Other then that feel free to ask away.
>>56560408
Yeah Ive got a question. Why the fuck did verizon disable the internal fm recievers in the s7 edges they sell? That kinda pisses me off. In fact you do a lot of things that piss me off. If it werent for them being the only network that actually gets coverage at my backwoods home, Id tell you to shove it, and switch to a better company.
>>56560481
>Why the fuck did verizon disable the internal fm receivers in the s7 edges they sell?
100% honest. I have never even heard of this before. If I had to guess it was because of some kind of contract deal with either the manufacturers or us. Like you said. Verizon works in the midwest more or less because no one else has to excess dosh to expand in low revenue return states.
>>56560408
Ok I'll play your little game verizon fag
In my store the iphone 7 turnout is out of this fucking world
Everyone is asking for them and I'm telling them that it won't be until mid october before they get their preorder, maybe later.
The Note 7 recall is going to shit, I've already have a couple of customers that came in angrily asking for a loaner phone until the replacement notes arrive, I'm just a floor lead so I usually just throw them at my store's Assistant Manager
Also I feel like you fuckers are starting to feel the heat because I see more and more verizon commercials taking shots at us and T-Mobile
