IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

----

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™
Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable

----

Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I recently bought a T420 and just got my msata from ebay in the mail. For the anon that was asking for benchmarks here is a 24gb kingston drive. About ready to install windows.

Try reseating RAM. Every time I've had issues after going balls-deep into my Thinkpad, it turns out that I fucked up putting the RAM back in.

Does the Thinkpad x220 trackpad has a sticker that can be removed? Mine is wearing off a bit

I would think it'd be at least $20 less if you upgrade it yourself. I got mine for $90, just got done upgrading ssd and ram for an extra 50. Now I just have to buy one of those alienware ips panels to get rid of that horrible screen.

>>
>>56540427

Something has to be. Could be static - did you make sure to ground yourself (minimum frequently touching large metal object and not wearing wool socks on carpet)? I replaced thermal paste on T420 before, and it was a breeze, but not sure how more difficult T410 is.

if it's windows recovery then it's either an issue with windows, or you managed to just barely fuck up your cpu installing it

The cpu is recognized in BIOS, that means i didnt fuck it up right?

if you only partially fucked it up then the bios will recognize it just fine.
it's only when you fully broke it that you wont even get to the bios.

Doesn't post anymore. Doesn't even load in to bios. Tried clearing the nvram and every configuration of ram I could do. I get a beep code with no ram installed, but when you press the power button it flashes on for less than a second and then actually starts 5 seconds later, which it's never done before. I tested it with the dock again after resetting the nvram and it's still fucked.

while later /g/ recommends t420. i buy the t420 used on amazon. actually paid about $70 too much, but i got a really nice clean one. have it for few years. its great. plays a few games. spacebar dies. order replacement oem keyboard. comes in 2 days. fix it. its all gud again. i luv my t420. ty /g/

The screen is worn out and burned in, the HDD is loud, nobody has changed the thermal paste in 19 years and it weighs more than I do, but fuck me is it cool.
This laptop is only a year younger than me, this was top shit was I was a baby, now I have a machine with 750 times the ram, a modern 3300mhz Pentium G, and 2000 times the storage capacity

T420 with EXP GDC
I don't have Optimus.
Haven't tested an AMD card so no comment there, I'm using a GTX 960.
Yes
I'm running 16GB RAM, no issues at all.
In the beginning i had random crashes but i fixed it by setting the expresscard speed manually to x1 in bios (Default is Auto), the bandwidth bottleneck is only noticeable in benchmarks, barely noticeable in gaming.

Thanks for answering, some more questions.
Why EXP GDC and not PE4C from hwtools? (I assume they are different and the latter seems to be more serious and recommended, maybe thats why the other guy fried his?)
When you say you don't have Optimus I assume your laptop only has integrated graphics and you're using an external screen right?
About the expresscard speed, I've never seen this option on my t520 bios, did you get a custom bios or do t420's have this by default?
W7 I assume?

>>56545166
Just saw it, thanks. Im actually thinking of getting a T420 too for actual portable use anyway, I like my T520 very much since it has the fhd panel and has msata + 2nd caddy. I wouldn't care much about breaking things on another laptop desu.

Because i don't want to pay $100+ in shipping + customs, the exp gdc has free worldwide shipping everywhere.
Yep, hd3000 for the laptop display and external display for the egpu for a dual screen setup.
The T420 has it by default, same tab where you control intel speedstep and energy settings.
Yes, tried Linux but couldn't manage to get the eGPU work.
Been running my eGPU setup for 4 months.

Maybe that anon fried it by plugging it wrong or something? The instructions for the exp gdc are vague as fuck and it has 5 inputs, of which i only use one.
>>
>>56545419
I see, seems like it's worth it. I'll assume the other anon got unlucky and go ahead anyway since I haven't seen mass reports of failures like this yet, only one mention of something about the way the exp gdc plugs in that may cause shorts when done wrong. Thanks for your help anon.

Say, /tpg/, why would I bother buying an expensive Thinkpad?

Isn't it cheaper and more efficient to buy a med-range laptop, then get an external HDD, some big screens, better keyboard and mouse?

That way the laptop is just the central unit, necessary for everything to function but cheap to replace if it breaks down.
And you can still easily take it out of the house/mobility is ensured

I am compiling a general list of things to look out for when purchasing used Thinkpads. I will eventually post the list to a site and suggest it get added to the sites in OP. Feel free to contribute general or model specific tips by replying and I will add them on to the list

Here is what I have so far:
-Bring a live ISO of another OS you trust so that you can determine whether something is a hardware or software issue

-Enter BIOS, make sure that it is not password locked, if there is a screen prompting for a password then it is password locked and you will not be able to change all settings

-In BIOS, make sure hardware matches the seller's description (core hardware is listed in the BIOS)

-In BIOS, make sure that computrace and anti theft is disabled

-In boot utilities run simple hardware diagnostics if available (newer models will allow you to check the health of memory and storage)

-Boot the device and check that inputs like buttons, touchpad, and keyboard are working properly (make sure they are not disabled in the BIOS before claiming something doesn't work)

-Check physical condition of the item and run a test on ports if possible

-Check if the COA is still on the laptop if planning on using it

-Plug the laptop to a power source or unplug if running off a wall socket to check functionality of battery and power input

-Inspect the screen for dead/stuck pixels or any other screen damage

-IF X220/X230 Series: inspect the screen for white spots (visible especially on light images being displayed)
This is caused by too much padding behind the display that is being pressed against it

-check remaining battery capacity (using upower or tlp on GNU/Linux) (there is a way on Windows as well that I can't remember, if you know reply and I will add it)

-IF T61 series: beware of nvidia dedicated GPU edition as it is famous for problems that lead to GPU failure

I would use pfsense on any shitbox that can take another network card, a dedicated AP/antenna, and a switch so you can have ethernet ports

I have my doubts about making Windows both a router and Wireless Access Point. I never tried it and would be interested to hear from someone that got this working. All besides the point that the wireless card in a laptop is not going to perform as well as a dedicated antenna/AP.

It's been ok if the distances are not too long and it's only 1-2 clients for the AP. The biggest hurdle however that I came accross is that despite the wireless card (Advanced-N 6205
) being capable of 5Ghz I still haven't managed to get it to act as a AP@5Ghz due to hardcoded regulatory bullshit that prevents it from being the one initiating 5Ghz connections

I always plug in and remove the GDC EXP v8 ExpressCard with power off. When I turn my X230 on it will turn on for less than a second, shut down for few seconds and then turn on normally. This happens when I either add the eGPU or remove it both of which I only do at a complete shutdown state.

because if some piece of shit decides to steal parts from your computer and then complain to shitbay about those parts never being in there, you will have no way to prove it. Sellers can easily order return shipping in the US border due to the nature of their business shipping package. This doesn't apply for international shipments. It's a huge mess and shitbay doesn't make it any better by ALWAYS siding with buyers.

The T400 is still a good computer for everyday basic shit, especially with an SSD. But $260 is about double what you should be paying, even if in near-mint condition. There are plenty of T400 units on eBay in great shape with SSDs and 1440x900 screens going for no more than $150, and even that I would consider kind of pricey.

I threw my phone once out of anger, but I would never hit a computer. That's just wrong. Computers are our greatest allies, and if its not working its probably your fault, not the computer's.

Phones on the other hand are merely frustrating and expensive pieces of shit. And if you have an LG90 like I do, the combination of it and Android would drive mother theresa to drink. Apps randomly crashing, screen not swiping, eternally turning on in my pocket and taking thousands of pictures of nothing, combined with the shitty service of t-mobile, its perfectly reasonable to hit your phone, to discipline it.

But a computer which requires discipline merely has an undisciplined owner. Unlike a phone, a computer will do exactly what you tell it to do, when you tell it to do it, no more and no less. So when you hit a computer, you are really hitting yourself. And you deserve better than that.

I bought a X230 with IPS, 8GB, 9cell, and 250GB HDD for $275. I don't think a X230 is worth $300 unless it has IPS because thats like a $80 part.
>>
>>56557268
Only reason why I bit was cause they say it's brand new. I'm really picky about the condition of my machines and I was looking for something brand new or excellent in condition.

I was thinking of getting that x330 FHD IPS mod from some chinamen in a month and probably selling the part as a replacement. Same with the hard drive and the ram, just get rid of it on ebay as replacements (cheap of course) and essentially use that as a way to upgrade my stuff to mSATA SSD and 16gb or ram.
>>
>>56557268
It's brand new, though, if the seller is to be believed. That must count for something.

/tpg/, what would be the next thinkpad to snatch at a great deal if what I'm after is trying new things

I own a T43, T60p, X201, X220, and T520

Started with an X220, what a great machine
Found a cheap X201 and wanted to see why they were sometimes perferred. Way better build and I really miss the latch on other laptops, but I prefer X220's keyboard and its higher res despite it being 16:9 vs 16:10
T60p (not 1600x1200 but 1400x1050), wanted an older machine to try linux. Spent a whole summer just on it as I took only that with me on holiday, was quite fun and I wish its cpu was stronger, the 4:3 screen and build of that machine is in my mind so far unparalleled
Found another great deal, a T43, and honestly I'm not a fan - I like the super button and I like the T60p's build and higher res screens better, only thinkpad I basically never use and wish I hadn't bought.
This was all 2+ years ago, and I worked from my medium-high end desktop PC build.
New job ended up involving building websites and doing some graphic design for logos, but mostly documents and emails, so anyway I spent a month on ebay until I found a good T520 that was 1080p, and it came with the Nvidia GPU but a dualcore, and it's basically always plugged in - way better for work than my previous consumer-tier lelnovo flex, don't regret getting it but I now am really curious about what a T420 1600x900 would feel like

Should my next thinkpad be a T420? Or does the T430 already have a the right BIOS to have a T420 keyboard with all the buttons working?
Or an X200-X230 tablet to try the tablet mode?
Or an X60t/X61t for its aesthetics?

Don't feel the need for a W701ds, got monitors at home
I don't see the hype behind the X301 besides the screen being between X2XX and X4XX size, I like the builds/looks of others more and its cpu is weaker than my X201, and should I need higher res I have a T60p and T520 so sry but the W701ds and X301 don't appeal to me, the T420/T430 and X60t/X61t are the ones I was more thinking about

The X300/X301 is loved because of its keyboard and the build quality. It was almost like Lenovo forgot what cost-cutting was and just decided to modernize the 600X and give the Macbook Air a swift kick in the balls.

That's really the only reason you would want to own one. Because it was the last true no-compromise Thinkpad. But unless you're planning to just use it for Starcraft and typewriter, it's utterly useless in day-to-day use.

here you go fampai

It's gone through some changes: started with the stock 320gb WD blue, then got a 120gb 850 EVO main and moved the 320 to the ultrabay, 320 started throwing errors recently so I upgraded to a 275gb Crucial MX300 main, no onboard slave for battery saving, and threw a couple drives I had laying around into enclosures for storage. Going to dig my old S10-3 netbook out of storage soon and throw a tiny SSD in it, hook the externals to that and use it as a home server

1600x900, HD3000. I've considered swapping to the Nvidia mobo and fan but it's hard to justify the minimal performance improvement, probably going to just put the money towards an eventual desktop build.

There you go, more info than you ever wanted
>>
>tfw you regret getting a X220 instead of an X230
>>
I'm so fucking mad with Lenovo right now. My X250 died completely only 2 months out of warranty. At first it would power on but not boot, now it will not even power on.

For the time being I've gone back to my X200, which is a little slow but of course works flawlessly. I'm debating if I should try finding the problem myself, or just take it to the local computer repair dude and let him fool around with it. I don't feel like giving any more money to the cunts at Lenovo.

And who the fuck can I go to in order to get a decent laptop from now on? Does anybody NOT make shit in this day and age?

I have an X201 thou, already great build quality and the T60p has even better, and the keyboard is the same, and the cpu is weaker (i think)

And the speaker placement is weird to me.
Don't get me wrong, I love the X320 and X330 mods but the X300/X301 I wouldn't go for just yet, wouldn't be enough for a daily driver

It probably is, same thing happens with my T520 but I uninstalled the proper audio drivers and let windows install what it could. Try installing the proper realtek audio drivers from lenovo or alternatively uninstall and let windows pick drivers.

Oh yeah man. No electricity should have been in that machine. I think some thermal paste must have shorted the CPU. I was too messy with the paste. I've learned that you have more room for mistakes in a desktop than with a laptop.

I'll just buy a x220 when I get my next paycheck. The T410 was a waterdowned T420 anyway but it was a great machine with 320gb HDD and 8gb of ram for 150.

I myself am considering going from the X220 to the X201, but I'd miss having 2 drives, the keyboard I prefer, and that I only have a 6 cell for the X201 vs my 9 cell X220, and the displayport. But I really like the build and look/aesthetics of the X201, so it's a massive shame about it being inferior in most ways, because the few ways in which it's better (build, looks, latch) really matter to me. Can't find any cheap X201/X200 batteries that are geunine online though, shame, I was only just getting into linux to the point where I can use it over Windows 7 for daily driver stuff (but for work I need Winblows 7 still so I'd be using my T520)
