What's the difference between the muscles of someone who trains for strength and someone who trains fro hypertrophy?

Strength training isn't just about muscles, it's also about joints, ligaments, tendons, bone density.

Hypertrophy is about targeting just the muscles, so they grow bigger.

In bodybuilding, there's actually some muscles you don't want to get bigger. For example, if you do a lot of heavy OHP, dumbbell presses, and lateral raises; but you have shitty form and too much weight (which is the case for a lot of guys), you will end up additionally training the supraspinatis muscle in your rotator cuff. As the supraspinatis hypertrophies, it pushes against the AC joint, causing your shoulders to pop when you lift them. This eventually leads to a torn rotator cuff.

There has come about this utterly bullshit meme that all you need is to train like a powerlifter in order to look like a bodybuilder, all because some highly inaccurate short studies and highly inaccurate EMG studies show full body activation on the squat, bench and deadlift.

But that doesn't mean shit, just because your bicep is activating on a bench press doesn't mean you're getting anywhere near sufficient training stimuli.

The only muscles strength training actually stimulates effectively is the chest, some triceps, quadriceps, and the entire posterior chain. So basically you're not even training 75% of the fluff muscles that actually make you look aesthetic.

What makes the issue even worse is that the bench, squat and deadlift are so good at what they do it makes the imbalance of aesthetic proportions even worse, since your fluff muscles can't overload and grow anywhere near as much as your functional muscles. The ideal approach is to still do your big 3, but do not go crazy on them.

Here's my personal story.

I started out like this. I decided to lose weight, and on the first of the next month I took this picture and for the first time in my life I went on a diet.

I spent 6 months on a diet. No exercise, just watched total calories. Didn't really care about anything else.

I steadily lost weight. I was down 47 lbs by the end.

I then decided to have a very relaxed diet. Watch calories when it was convenient, but never turn down a good time. I lost about 1 lbs a month with this new type of diet.

Now I'm down 55 lbs. I am trying to get myself to exercise, but I'm depressed. I started dieting in hopes of reconnecting with my ex. She got pregnant. I met a new girl. She was then my reason to live. Asked her out eventually, she said no. Since then everything in my life seems to be going downhill. Friends moving on with their lives, and I just feel hopeless.

I've come so far but I can't force myself to keep going. How can I get motivated? Here is me, took this picture yesterday. I could use a little encouragement.

I can easily control my diet, but anything that requires me to move is hard. I can't even fantasize about getting back with my ex anymore because that would ruin her child's life.

I have no energy! Thinking I fried my CNS I got off of pre workout two weeks ago after building up a tolerance, but I'm STILL tired and can't attack the gym with the intensity needed to make progress.

I eat healthy 5x a day and workout in the mornings and sometimes in the evenings.

Example work day:
7am: Banana and milk protein shake
-Gym for hour and a half
10am: Work
12pm: chicken and sweet potatoes
3pm: chicken, kale and nuts
6pm: chicken, broccoli and rice
7:30pm: home from work, take an hour nap.
9pm: gym for an hour
10:30: cottage cheese and nuts.
1130:sleep

What the shit /fit/ I eat well and at regular 3 hour intervals, each week I change my diet, I get 40-60g's of protein a meal with plenty of carbs and no caffeine. My head feels...dull, like I'm empty. What the hell can I do to increase my energy levels?
