People say shit like this to prevent you from gaining social status - which may hurt their own social status. Ever heard of the experiment by sociologists where one person is given $10 to split between him and another person however they want, but if the other person rejects the offer then neither get anything? Once the split gets to around $7:$3 a lot more people start rejecting the offer. I.e. people are literally rejecting free money because someone else would be getting more. Underlying everything is biological competition, most people do not have your best interests at heart and will discourage and resent you for ambition. You will never escape that, it's just human nature and you have to accept it and ignore people when what they're doing or saying makes no fucking sense.
