So I'm having best buy install a radio and the led monitor for my car because it also tells me gas mileage and oil life and all that stuff. I'm also going to replace the car speakers but the installation bay said it would be an additional 190$ to the 70$ for the radio and its frame (190 is for parts and labor) for a total of 260$. Would I be better off installing just the speakers myself? Is it difficult or should I just pay best buy

I want to build a portable grill out of this canister, what's the best technique to make a perfect straight horizontal cut a couple inches above the solder?

chuck that bad boy in a lathe and use a parting tool

or

place it on a level surface
fasten a marker on a combination square at the height you need
draw your line all around
>>
>>933150
I don't have access to a lathe, but the combination square seems like a good idea
>>
>>933147
Put a lot of extra weight on a guillotine
Wouldn't hurt to add some extra height as well

Okay /diy/, i need your help. I am currently building a MKARS80 transceiver, and ive got a problem with the transformers. I build it to learn more about electronics and ham radio, and yeah, i know, not the best project for a newfag. So, first problem:
What is the difference between windings & turns?
2 Windings with 3 turns. So i take one wire, turn it 3 times around the core, and then i take a second one, and turn it 3 times from the other side on the core?
Other question pic related.

>>
>>933141
Neither I'd say. One is about 270 degrees, while the other looks like about 630 degrees. A turn is one complete revolution of the current.
>>
>>933142
Okay.
Here you can find the Manual: (Page 8, top left T2)
http://www.radio-kits.co.uk/radio-related/MKARS80/MKARS%2080%20transceiver%20V1-3.pdf
How to do this? O.o
>>
>>933141
left is 1/2 turn
right is 1 + 1/2 turns

left is what they mean however by 1 turn from the shape of the core. ideally you bring the wires together or cross them to close the loop but if your instructions dont then dont

a winding is a collection of turns that a wire makes

so yes 1 wire = 1 winding, 2 wires = 2 windings

Its all about fabricating it yourself, to your specific case and rig.

Not sure anyone can really help you there

How do I install mortise hinges? I got them for looks and the appeal of being able to take shutter off without unscrewing hinges, but the Amazon seller didn't include instructions. My windows are smallish pella vinyl. Planning to make shutters out of tongue and groove boards but haven't decided if I'm putting them inside or out yet, I'm probably going to have to put them inside since the window sticks out like an 1/8" out from the exterior trim boards
5 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Pretty hinges.
>>
I have a fucking CRATE of those bastards...

Here's a dumb explanation.

In the photo, they are in their "OPEN" position, so the shutter would be open and flat on the wall.

The one side of the hinge screws to the narrow edge of the shutter board.

The other side of the hinge screws to the narrow edge of the window facing trim board.

When the shutter is closed into the window, the Butterfly of the hinge meets.

When closed the shutter and window facing trim should be flush.

Understand?
>>
>>932292
personally i would run a 2x4 or whatever around the outside to mount them too. then just paint or wrap the 2x4 with aluminum mounting directly to a vinyl window is prolly not such a good idea

I want to control a DC motor using Raspberry Pi and a L239D microcontroller, like in this page:

https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-raspberry-pi-lesson-9-controlling-a-dc-motor?view=all

I saw in other webs that is recomended to sold a capacitor on the motor to supress noise.
Do I need do that, even if I use the microcontroller?
3 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>933357
yes, especially if you use a microcontroller or raspberry pi. Capacitors cost like nothing man. Oh an the L239D is a motor controller, it amplifies the signals from the raspberry pi into something that can power a motor.
>>
You should connect the +vmotor pin though.the RPI power is not used to control the motor

If you have acces to a wood lathe, i would sugest you cut the diameter to about 4 inches in diameter. round up the tip, and dont forget to sand it to a high finish.
That being said its probbably cheaper and easier to just buy a dragon dildo

how expensive/difficult is it to get into robotics?
I'm interested in learning python, can you write them in that?
4 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>932820
Depends on what you mean by "get into robotics"

If you mean as a hobby programming little toy arms they probably sell some you can program in python or use some sort of interpreter.

If you mean as a robotics programmer for industrial robots, read this article (http://robohub.org/the-future-of-robot-off-line-programming/) and then decide if you think you can gain the skills required. And it will probably be too expensive for you to do as a hobby.

If you mean how difficult is it to make a walking talking humanoid robot butler with natural language recognition, machine vision, force feedback and self awareness then unless you are rich as bill gates and as smart as a couple of Von Neumanns, Einsteins, Plancks or etcetera then it is going to be far too difficult and expensive for you.
>>
>>932820
been a hobby of mine for years. I've built several. If you are hobbying it, go to robot shop and build a few kits first. You ain't gonna build an R2D2 though. Think smart trainable cockroach.

Maybe start with a Lego Mindstorm kit and work from there.

You can flash a Mindstorm controller brick with a Java interpreter called LeJOS, then write your code in Java.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LeJOS

Distilling ethanol is not Amateur Night, if you fuck up you can cause an explosion, or you could distill it wrong and end up with poison.
>>
>brew alcoholic beverage
>run through still
>??????

Seriously though, Google will give you tons of simple designs for a distillation apparatus.

As long as you follow the instructions and don't use lead solder, it should be fine.

PROTIP: use a reflux still
>>
>>929880
Not possible to make poison by distilling wrong. Anything bad in the product came from the mash.

Err... RamMap is built to do exactly what you're asking us to do for you. RamMap lets you see which processes are using which blocks of memory. I suggest you go read it's FAQ, learn to use the app, work out which processes are eating your memory, then think about whether you need them running or not.

You could try installing an OS that would allow you to address more than 4GB RAM, for a start - its called Windows 7 (64 bit), x64.

Your (usable) RAM is showing 4GB - used. Nor do I know why you have a 32 bit OS on a 12GB PC, but, throw that shit, it aint activated anyway.

Hey /diy/, I usually go to the technology board but this has been a question for a few days. So my neighbor across the street decided to start welding shit and I'm worrying about my son's eyes. He likes to play on his bike during the day, which is also when my neighbor decides to weld. The dude has a welding mask, but doesn't take care to stop the bright light. How far can I be without damaging my eyes? I'm assuming it won't affect us too much, but it's annoying to tell my son to stop and turn around when he gets halfway around the cul-de-sac.

Neighbor can afford a welding curtain, and you can tell son NOT to stare at arc lights. Merely being across street isn't much hazard.
