Every video I've seen about sawstop shows the finger/sausage sloooowly approaching the blade to demonstrate the brake, and then it shows the intact test subject. I've been wondering: what would happen if you straight up slapped the blade or hit it with your hand at a higher velocity?

You'll be better off than without that is for sure. Probably just a laceration and no missing digits. Have you seen how fast that bitch stops the blade?
>>
>>935489
It's fast and extremely effective, but I don't buy that "intact fingers" stuff they say. I mean you're still touching a sharp jagged blade spinning at 2000+ rpm.

We have one at our makerspace. A guy put his hand into it while cutting. Got cut. Not bad enough for stitches.

So I'm pretty proud of myself /diy/.... I'm almost gid/diy/!

So, this is my first electronically derived art project. I bought a bunch of old broken printers and scanners off ebay for £5.... (shipping was a bitch though, racked up to around £50 in the end)

Anyway, I broke them down and took out all the ferrite beads from the wiring. Threw out the rest of the junk and got to work on pic related.

What do you think?

Its a face - displaying a man who's printer has broken.

Next step is to find a piece of wood and stick them down.

Can anyone recommend me a glue?

I've been poking around bonsai for awhile now, and specifically have been looking at a book about herb bonsai.

I think that I'll pick up some young potted rosemary from the market and let it grow for a year or so indoors (use a fan to simulate wind, etc to build up trunk), before doing too much.

I find that the root-over-rock technique is striking, but have also seen it elsewhere that rosemary is not particularly good for that method.

I'm curious about pic related, because I can't seem to find anywhere that discusses what the white dead looking part of some bonsais are, but it's quite striking and I would eventually like to do something like that. Not sure if it's possible with herbs though.

Also, just general tips are welcome!

1. Find basics about bonsai styles and shapes.
2. Choose your plant, optimally young one. It should be strong, healthy, with flexible wood so you can wire it.
3. Cut unnecessary branches and wire the rest to get the basic shape. Bonsai wires are special - soft eloxed aluminium. They are much easier to shape than normal wires.
4. Let your plant grow for some time in normal container or even in free soil. Check wires regularly so they don't cut into the growing bark. If they are starting to do it, immediately remove them and later re-wire your plant again.
5. Try to improve the root system by adding a lot of very small stones to the soil. It promotes the root branching.
6. Cut and shape your plant when there is enough of new growth. That is usually once or twice per year.
7. If root system is strong and compact enough, you might move your plant into a bit smaller container.
8. Later, when your plant starts resembling a bonsai and gets some price, you can consider moving it into a bonsai pot.

- Rosemary is good herb for making an alternative bonsai. It makes a lot of foliage and can be shaped easily.
- White part you mentioned is called dead wood. It's the part of a tree, where bark that doesn't feed any branches was removed.
- Growing bonsai is a hobby that needs a lot of patience. If you have enough space for it, get more cheap plants and experiment. It takes 2 or more years to make a bonsai.

I want to make my own Oculus, the plan is:
1) Find a screen
2) Find out the Oculus protocol
3) Put a LSM303D and a pi zero on your head for tracking, send signals to pc like the Oculus
4) Get Cheap VR glasses

3 and 4 is done but when I wanted to get a HDMI screen I found this: http://german.alibaba.com/product-gs/5-5-inch-1440p-lcd-1440-2560-tft-lcd-module-with-hdmi-board-for-smart-phone-60249109592.html but then some fucker bought like 100.000 units of that display and now its completly sold out

>"But I am so sorry, for now, there is no 1440P panel in stock, because this type of display has been sold out. May I know 1080P panel is OK for you? Pls kind confirm it. If only 1440P panel is acceptable, the new batch of samples would be ready at the end of March, pls kind confirm it."

- Where do I get a display (hdmi & 1440p)?
- Where do I find out about the Oculus protocol

I imagine you guys are a good source for this.

I recently got a copy of the CorelDRAW 7 suite to generate graphics for a laser cutting machine.

I have some very light experience with parametric modeling software(solid-works, Pro-Engineer) but none with graphics software. I want to be able to draw shapes that fit together with box joints.

is there a function in CorelDRAW that makes this easier?
are there programs that can generate templates?

or will I just need to suck it up and experiment?
laser is an Epilog Laser 75 watt, Helix if that's important. all lines for cutting must be hairline thickness

also, any tips and tricks involving the use of CorelDRAW would be nice.
no, I cannot just get AutoCAD the department won't get it for me.

There's a function called extrude, which takes a 2D vector and adds a third dimension, essentially turning it into a prism of sorts.

It's still a 2D program though so the result will still be a 2D vector.

I can't see CorelDRAW being useful for generating 3D data for this machine. For some pretty technical drawings, yes...
>>
>>932702
There are object properties in coreldraw that let you set line lengths and angles (which shouldn't be needed if you turn on snap to angle).

The laser cutter just takes vector paths so just export those.

You'll have to figure out and plan all the measurements before hand though.
>>
>>932702
What kind of laser cutter can't work off of dxf or some other 2d format that you can export to from solidworks?

the Power and Reset LEDs on my PC's motherboard (like in pic) flicker when i turn on the PC - and the PC does not boot. if the speakers are plugged into the 3.5mm jack they pulse ("wow-wow-wow..." sound) at at the same frequency as the LEDs flicker (~20Hz).

i checked the voltages on all the connectors from the power supply and they're all good.

does anyone have any thoughts on what can cause this flickering? dead caps something? i suspect that the MB is fucked, but how can i figure out what failed?

>>
Trial and error, replace hardware until you pinpoint the damaged element.
Try a different psu for starters. Unplugging everything you don't need.
Sure it could be blown caps if your mobo is quite old. You'll know the bloated ones when you see them.
>>
>>934041

thx. forgot to mention that the MB is about 6 years old. all the caps look ok - no bulging or leaks. when i manually jump the "PS ON" and "GND" pins on the 24-pin PS connector, the PS turns on (and produces the correct voltages). but when i plug the 24-pin connector into the motherboard, the PS does not turn on. why is the motherboard not turning on the PS?
>>
>>934041
Again with /diy/ always always always starting the troubleshooting process with bad caps/solder joints/traces/etc. Why do you always start troubleshooting with the most invasive and convoluted shit?

OP, try replacing the battery on the motherboard first, then report back.

if disconnecting and reconnecting the ribbon cables on the back of the panel don't work, the connections to the drivers are fucked and the entire monitor is trash.
>>
>>935683
Looks like one of the buffer board IC's has failed or a hot press ribbon cable connecting to the inside of the LCD has bad solder joints. Does pressing around the display make any of the segments come back good?

I want to begin to throw some clay but I don't have the resources to actually buy a wheel so I want to make my own wheel.
I have a washing machine motor that may work but I cannot imagine what else can I do.
So if any one has like the blueprints of a pottery wheel or a book or so tho make one would be appreciated

>>
I'm currently building one for my girlfriend. Taking forever on it because we live in an apartment and she can't use it here.

You can find plans for a ghetto one with a washing machine motor online.

The motor is not a good choice though due to the fact they are a/c and heat up when you limit the power on them.

Your best bet is to find a deent sized d/c motor with PWM. Treadmills are an easy source of these.
>>
and in RPM and hp what are the numbers??
>>
>>935554
If you mean me, I'm not 100% sure yet. Math says about 300 which is a bit high. That is also assuming the speed on the motor is accurate. Often the numbers are high. Plus I can limit it down a little if need be.

Current motor is 2.3HP Max with 1.75 HP Continuous rating. Overkill but the motor was free.

It sagging a little its not really noticeable unless you sit on the ground and look at it the top is 3/4 inch thick

Hi /diy/

Can I have some good resources on wood working?

I've bought a heap of 9mm MDF and some thicker supporting "beams", which will be used to attach pieces together and add structure/strength.

What I'm building is a cockpit enclosure. I'll use some good strength wood glue and either nails or screws. It'll be made from a side flat piece and a number of boxes to attach to.

If I can get some good material on good joints, things not to do, etc that'd be great.

The best advice anyone can give you is, wear a fucking respirator when working with MDF
Use very high quality blades when cutting MDF, because cutting MDF is tough and dulls your shit quick.

9mm is really thin shit to be building something like that...
>>
>>934773
Nothing is going to be particularly structural or load bearing. Anything that may take a little extra abuse will have internal reinforcements, so it's cladding round a structure inside.

I'll keep a note on good blades and making sure to use a good vacuum system to capture all the dust etc, thanks.
>>
>>934700

If any of what you're doing is going to be outside or exposed to the elements, forget it. MDF soaks up moisture like kitchen towel. Weak as fuck when it's damp.

You cunting bastard arsebandit motherfucker.

I think what you have there is a PotatoPhone photograph.

but aside from that.

you have internal and external screw calipers, I beleive those are by Starret, and if so, they're fucking great tools.

there 4 micrometers there of various sizes, which are superb tools for accurate measurement.

the wood box, taps and dies, for screw cutting and thread-cutting on rod and holes respectively.
the round things with four holes in them are dies, which should mount into a sort of two-armed wrench. Each one should be punched with a number or letters. ie, 1/4 WW (1/4 inch Whitworth) or M6 (metric M6). Given the sizes, and the thread pitch on the taps (the screw-like pieces that are used to cut threads into holes), I expect they'll be non-metric.

the cardboard box looks like drill bits, all well stored. take one or two out and look and see if they have any name markings on them? Look to me like pillar drill bits, possibly with a 1MT taper on the ends.
>>
>>934367
the most useful stuff there (at least for me) would be the 0-3? mics, the dividers and center head/protractor/square/rule

Lift your feet when you walk for a start. Avoid synthetic clothing, wear leather shoes etc. Friction = charge. Reduce friction, reduce charge. A room humidifier might work as well, its easier to build a charge in a dry environment than a not so dry one.

Those are the easy suggestions though. I want to build something.

..there's nothing to build, unless you want to walk around your house with an 50 foot earth strap from your wrist to the nearest water tap. You sound like one of those muppets that uses an arduino to flash a LED. Stop overthinking it.

If by now you can't work it out with the masses of resources online for removing stripped screws, maybe you're best letting a professional do the work.
>>
>>934209
you drill it down, break with various tools the remaining of the screw and take it out, get in new screw.

Done it dozen of times, aways works. When I am lazy I do this with clenched rusty stuff too.
