Hello fellas, I built this "workbench" today from a couple pallets and liked the result, but it's kinda flimsy and I'm thinking of ways to reinforce it (It doesn't need to be pretty). I'm not into woodworking, that's why it may look amateurish.

Any advice or tips?

Cross bracing anon. Strap of timber across the side, one on the back (drawn on the front for clarity), this should sort you out for now.

You need to brace as pictured to remove wobble.

I don't know how you're going to do that with pallets you're going to have to get creative. My table is made from 2x4's so design and bracing is super simple.

My plan was to use 2x4's, but everything in my country is very expensive and I was not willing to pay a lot of money for a simple workbench.

I have already nailed a board on the lower side (pic related), but ill try your suggestion. Thanks.

How To Free Energy
60 posts and 6 images submitted.

Moving magnets, nothing is for free tho, not even immigrants.
>>
>>922889
That's not 'free energy' OP, that's a transducer; you're converting mechanical energy (moving the magnet) into electrical energy, by inducing a current in the coil.

Now, if you want to play around with something, try this: Put up a long-wire antenna outside your house, as high up as you can get it. For bonus points, tune the length for 1000kHz (middle of the AM broadcast band). Sink a 6-foot ground rod into the ground for a good, solid earth ground point. Connect that to the lowest voltage drop Schottky diode you can find, using the ground rod for your circuit ground. Now you're stealing power from all the AM broadcast transmitters in your area. Connect that to an energy-harvesting-and-storing circuit that charges a supercapacitor or secondary battery (Linear Technology has ICs that are designed to do this), and over time you have 'semi-free' energy (again, you're 'stealing' it from AM broadcast transmitters -- but they're giving it away anyway).
>>
>>922893
What if we poison the water in mexico so that it genetically modifies all newborns so that they are slightly magnetic. Then, instead of building a wall, we build a massive coil they have to walk past to get into america, thereby generating electricity. I know it's not "free," but it's free for us.

I have a light with a grounded plug that I want to use on a timer I have on hand. Problem is the timer only accepts two pronged cords. Could I use one of these cheater plugs and connect the ground tab via ring terminal to a grounded cord plugged in close by?

>>
>>930326
Yes you could.

Portable appliances aren't covered by electrical code, so the world won't stop spinning should you do that.

One socket ground is as good as any other.
>>
>>930330
Thank you, that's what I figured.

I'm making a DIY light/reflector for some plants and because the reflector is going to be made out of metal duct I thought it'd be a good idea to ground it. I could just stop being cheap and spring for a grounded timer (like $12), but where's the fun in that?

The price to buy a wind mill to generate electricity is outrageous. I don't understand why they cost thousands of $$$$.
Why cant I hook up an altinator from a car to a wind mill to charge a battery?
It seems like a simple idea, and I have the ability to make the wind mill.

>>
>>928162
using a windmill to generate electricity is going about it all wrong op
you should be using a wind turbine to generate electricity.
>>
if you wanna connect the blades directly to the alternator, it wont work coz the rotational speed is too low. you'd have to rewire the alternator to compensate. however if you have a windmill, then presumably you can use gears or belts to obtain the necessary speed, so it could work unaltered.
>>
>>928162
Because they're low production volume items and a car alternator that is made in the millions still costs like $300.

Just because you can put together a system from scrap doesn't mean the company building a commercial product can too.

Anyone know if they're useful in any way or have any value?

Should i just throw them away?

I got some 40 watt four foot shop light enclosures I intend to use to replace some 100 watt incandescent bulbs in my garage. The enclosures have grounded plugs, however light bulb adapters have no provision for ground. I know there are ungrounded plug adapters with a ground attachment point, but I'm trying to do this without running a grounding wires.

Does an LED DC converter need to be grounded long-term?

its not the most dangerous thing you can do. if you're worried, just make sure you unplug it before changing your lightbulbs

How about you just do it right? One of these costs $5 and if the boxes are grounded, like you claim, its a 2 minute install.

Or you could just replace the old fixture with a standard outlet. Its probably a standard sized 4 inch box behind the fixture.

I dove into a project and got about 75% through it before realizing I have no idea what I'm doing. The simple version is I need to design a small pcb with the following I/O:
- 3 logic level control signal inputs (whatever gauge, probably 22),
- 12V source (maybe. I could connect it directly to the 12V output wire) (18awg, up to 6A)
- ground (18awg, up to 6A)
- 12V output (14awg, up to 6A)
- 3 signal outputs (14awg, up to 2A each)

So what is the best way to connect each of these to the board? Something disconnectable would be ideal, soldering 14awg directly to a board just seems like a bad idea.

Is there a better way to set it up?
I've heard it shouldn't touch any of the walls, but it might be okay to be against the back wall?

Hey /diy/

>TL;DR Help me learn Synths 101

I'm going to be starting up a synthesizer project this upcoming semester (hopefully more than one) and am looking for the best references to learn about synth design, development, and construction.

As a physics major I already know a lot of the basics of electronics and circuits, but that's mostly stuff like V = IR and what not. I don't know how any of that applies to actually generating sounds like a synth does.

My university apparently has a collection of Bob Moog's notes and drawings that I will hopefully be able to look at, though many of the parts might be outdated.

Hopefully this is enough info to get my point across, so please /diy/, teach me about synthesizers.

You basically need to learn about RLC circuits and how the charging/discharge changes waveforms. Frequency modulation can be easily done using a 555.

>>930072
I've been introduced to RLC circuits through E&M and Diff Eq, but am clueless on the practical application of them in synths (i.e. how the charging/discharging changes waveforms).

Care to give a brief explanation?

I'd like to know if anyone has experience with isomalt sugar?

I'd like to cast a slab of white non-translucent isomalt (about 55 per 80 per 3 cm). I found online that Cakeplay makes white isomalt ready to be melted in the microwave, which would be easier to use, but it's pretty expensive and I need lots of it to fill my cast.

Does anyone know how I can produce a great quantity of white matte isomalt with a limited budget?

>what is pulled sugar
any reason you need it to be made of artificial sweetener, flyboy?

just make pulled sugar, add food grade white pigment, press down into mold.
>>
>>930012
Actually I don't care if it's sugar or not, I'm just trying to produce a slab which needs to be opaque (and possibly shiny) and that could be destroyed if rained upon or exposed to water.

I found isomalt, which seemed to be the easiest way with to produce such an object. But any other ideas are welcome.

best i can say is don't be a cheapass. beer brewing is a hobby where you spend a good amount of money - to not save any money. _you don't do it to save money!_ if you try to save money it will not be fun.

for example: get a decent brew pot - one that's a little too big for what you need. one with a spigot perhaps. if you're gonna do this for for the rest of your life why not. seriously - look at the videos like "huehue here's how you user your new cheapass kit!" - look at that big ass lovely brew pot they use that doesn't come with your cheapass kit.

also - don't buy small size stuff. go full size batches the very first time. nothing like throwing away your 1 gallon piece of junk because you need to upgrade, or only having one gallon of fantastic beer that you just waited months for.

i duno, find a brew supply store in town if you have one and ask questions, or see if there's somebody in town who will let you help brew a batch or something

Long story short, my buddy is about to move into our apartment and live in our walk-in closet

The one thing he really hates about it so far is that the lightswitch is on the outside of the closet door.

Whats the easiest way to allow him to use a remote or something to turn the light on and off from inside the closet?

I tried amazon but "light bulb remote" only brought up cheap looking stuff like pic related

thank you /diy/!

>light bulb remote
this

or just use a floor lamp/table lamp with its own switch

you are welcome
>>
Lutron Maestro wireless dimmer. Make sure to not get the RF variety as that kind needs line of sight to operate. Make sure you understand how to install the switch correctly, and research if the switch requires a neutral conductor, as older building wiring usually does not have a neutral at the switch.
>>
Depending on the light switch location, I would just just a hole on the inside wall of the closet, right behind the light switch, rotate the box and switch to be inside the closet, then put a blank plate over the hole on the out side.
