The drywall seam has formed a hairline crack and has been fixed 4 or 5 times now. It is right at a large opening on a load bearing wall. I laid some plywood in the attic to prevent the joists from moving in case they were and installed metal bracketing before I added blown in insulation, and the wall is directly over the steel beam in the basement. It's a ~6 foot span with a double 2x8 and plywood header, with about 3 studs on each end (Jack/King). I don't know what to do anymore other than tear it all open again, or to just laminate the whole wall with another layer of plywood. What options do I have?

If it keeps forming you really should investigate why rather than patching it up and ignoring it. There's obviously an underlying problem.

Are your exterior walls brick? Does that exterior wall show any signs of subsidence or cracking?
>>
>>934205
It's an interior wall. The basement beam is fine. My only idea of what might be happening as that that one corner wasn't secured properly to the king studs, and it might be moving ever so slightly, enough to cause the crack to form since the seam is right near it.

I have been looking into building my own since the price for a hour or so in these things is about 75$ in my area.

I found these plans (http://www.scribd.com/doc/21770753/Float-Tank-Plans) but feel they can be improved upon.

also looking for an alternate heating rig that might have better control. Thanks

What is all the PVC and pump equipment for? To act as a mini jacuzzi?

All you really need is a vessel to hold water, and a drain for said water. Theres a number of ways to do that including building it with hotmop similar to a shower stall, gunnite similarly to a pool.

I've never been a fan of baths and have never done a sensory deprivation chamber, so I assume you float for an hour as meditation? Would the chamber really need a circulation or heating system, or is that a convenience thing?

Where do you plan on putting this thing thats likely 50% bigger than a bathroom jacuzzi tub?

>I've never been a fan of baths and have never done a sensory deprivation chamber, so I assume you float for an hour as meditation? Would the chamber really need a circulation or heating system, or is that a convenience thing?

The whole point is that the water temp is very near body temp so it removes the sensation of hot/cold. You're trying to remove your senses.

Circulation system is generally to clean it, but if OP is the only one using it, you could massively skimp since no health codes. Salt water is a bad environment for bacteria.

You also need to use a LOT of epsom salts.

>What is all the PVC and pump equipment for? To act as a mini jacuzzi?
sensory deprivation chambers are filled with brine--basically water that is saturated with salt.
so you need a heater to keep it warm, and you need a filter system to filter the brine acceptably or else it gets scummy quick.
Plus the filter system has to be all-plastic; no metals will last long in that kind of salt solution. Most parts from a normal pool or hot tub filter won't work.

we have discussed these things before.
For a single-person tank, usually the tank itself holds around 1200 lbs of water and then you need to add about 2,500 lbs of salt.

There are spun HDPE agricultural tanks that are acceptably sized, but you'd have to cut an entrance hole in the top. Many of the larger ones have cleaning ports but it's not really big enough to get into the tank through. Cost for the tanks is $800 - $1000.

I want to do something with this for my girlfriend, any ideas?

Hey /diy/, I need help with the caulking of my sink.

I'm renting an apartment and noticed mould arriving, and as I tried to scrub the mould, the caulking is beginning to peel off and I see more mould underneath.
I'm not handy in any way, I need some advice as to what to do to fix this.

(I'm afraid of letting the tenant/agency know of this because this mould was not present when I moved in)

>>
remove and re-apply some.Use bleacher to kill the mold.
>>
Get a caulk gun and a wet sponge. Strip it, re-caulk it and use the sponge to pretty it up. Easy day.
>>
>>934044
rip it all out.

clorox it all down.

let it all dry.

100% silicone doesnt mold. it is also a bitch to apply. remember to cut your tip very small and squeeze it under there until it comes out. let it day, and then cut it off with a brand new razor blade so it doesnt look unfinished.

I'm installing a projector, but there's one problem - it's a plasterboard/drywall type ceiling, and I'm not sure it's going to hold the weight (about 12 pounds or 5.5kg's). I've also got no idea how thick it is, but it seems pretty sturdy.

I was originally thinking of using 4-8 toggle bolts. The thing came with 2 75mm length screws which seem like they're supposed to go into a beam/joist rather than thin board. The mount plate is exactly 6 inches in diameter.

Can I mount it as is or will I fuck myself by ripping a hole in the roof and possibly death by projector?

>>
i have put heavier stuff than that on toggles but never on the ceiling.

if you can't lift the floor above to put extra noggins between the joists and you don't want to cut a hole then screw wood to ceiling into joists and then projector onto wood.

>>933124
>it's a plasterboard/drywall type ceiling
there are still be joists though right?
>>
>>933124
you could mount a brace from the attic between the joists to give you a better mounting location

or just move the projector location to the next closest joist....

but if its only 12 pounds, and nobody is going to touch it once its up, really..... just use the fucking toggle bolts
>>
>>933128
>if you can't lift the floor above
Above is the loft but the trapdoor to get in is all the way on the other side of the house, which means navigating through my roof.

There are definitely joists, in fact to get a perfect 4m throw distance it's about 20cm from the joist. I don't really want to mount it on the joist because 1) it would move the thing closer to the wall and therefore smaller image and 2) the plate wouldn't sit flush with the boards. I mean I could hide it I guess but it would probably also fuck with the alignment, since only two screws could go in.

>>933132
It would sit on the panel between the wall and the first joist. I also thought of using a brace but it would mean fucking around in my roof. I need this thing to not fuck out for at least 5 years (about when we'll replace the bulb or projector and I can inspect for sag or weakness).

This whole thing has made me realize what a lazy piece of shit I can be when instant gratification is the motive.

Millimetres, the 4 and 5 on the bottom are inches.
>>
>>933109
Upper row is most likely millimeter.
Lower row (4, 5; cut off) seems to be inch, as it aligns to about 25,5 of the above.
100-125 would be 2,5 centimeters, or ~1 inch then.

You moron.

Hey electronics /diy/ers. I was just looking at some simple circuits, and theres just one thing I don't really understand about the operation of a basic astable or monostable 555 circuit.

This guy gives a good run-down here: http://pcbheaven.com/wikipages/555_Theory/

Scroll down to "Up and down in 4 steps!".

What I don't understand is this. When the capacitor is fully charged, and it is looking for the least resistive path to ground (see pic), why does it seem to discharge "backwards", rather than just discharge to the ground path directly below it?

Maybe there is something about capacitor theory that I'm missing?
15 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Caps have polarity based on which way they're charged.
>>
>>932864
And this one is charged through Vcc as shown in pic. I guess this is where the fault in my understanding lies, thanks.
>>
>>932832
well basically it is disharging through the ground since the emitter of the transistor is also connected to ground (cap->gnd->transistor emitter->transistor collector->resistor->cap).

So I have a coin that has great sentimental value to me, I want to carry it daily. However, sticking it in my pocket every morning is a good way to lose it in 2 days. It has a hole in the middle I could thread something through. I don't want to put it on a necklace like pic related though, because that looks autistic if you aren't a girl. What could I make to carry it with no chance of losing it?

Hey.
I found a coloured version of Secret hitler print-and play.
i want to print it.
got any recommendations for what sort of cardboard to glue the prints on?
there are cards and some simple boards for tracking the games progress.

I'm not sure what size the cards will be, as i haven't printed them yet.
maybe just glue them to playing cards?

some dense cardboard or something would be ideal for the board.
any ideas where i can salvage some?

Hey /diy/ I been thinking...
Everyone has a shitload of devices that use wall warts. Voltages generally vary from 5VDC(USB) to 18-19VDC(laptop). All of them have to convert from ~120VAC to low VDC. Most of the cost of these are reduction, rectifying, and filtering
USB is starting to become a standard, you can even get outlets with 5VDC, but it doesn't cover the problem.

------What if there were a 20VDC, low ripple standard???------
-It would power laptops with minimal circuitry.
-It would require less of bulky wall warts, possibly even eliminating them.
-It's much easier (and cheaper) to convert from 20VDC to USB 5VDC than from 120VAC
-low ripple 20VDC would require less filtering for 5-9-12-18 VDC requirements.

Downsides are:
-You'd have to buy a supply for your house, and extra wiring (some are wiring their houses for 5VDC(USB))
-Manufacturer support currently non-existent

Wouldn't it be cheaper and more convenient in the long run?
Now, nobody has it, and it would be expensive to implement, but what about new houses?

Right now, I have a wall-wart for:
2 phones
2 tablets
Rechargeable trimmer
3 laptops
Bluetooth-to-stereo
printer
video switchbox
modem
wireless router
battery charger
2 e-cigs
jambox (small portable stereo for you youngfags)

I'm sure I missed some...
But, even at $3 each, that's $51, and that's a low estimate. House wiring lasts (for all practical purposes) forever but we get new devices every 5 years or less.
Cheap China laptop chargers are $10, good ones $60 or more
You can't replace a wal-wart for less than $5-$10.
Why not one LOW RIPPLE supply instead?

How do we make this happen?

>>
>>931707
>How do we make this happen?
We dont.
You are just making a larger problem than there currently is, which really is a nonproblem in the first place.
>>
The problem is getting it where it's needed. You still need 120v AC outlets for appliances, lighting and devices, and in many cases even two outlets is not enough, so you cannot sacrifice one or both outlets for 20v DC.

It's not worth the expense, incompatibility or inconvenience just to prevent use of wall-warts.

hey gang

Attach one rare earth magnet to one button battery and tape one LED light to all of that. Now you have a THROWIE, a little light that you can toss onto buildings, cars, etc, that will remain lit for weeks. Each one costs about 30 cents if you buy the materials in bulk.

Alright nerds I need your help.

My sister is going away for 4 days and I want to prank her while she's gone. She finds the whole shrek "someBODY once told me" meme a bit funny and always jokes with me about it. So basically I want to rig her bedroom door to have a cutout of shrek swing outward (Think of that giant hand thing in Jackass) and a small speaker to play the song when she opens it. I was thinking some kind of motor and electric switch but I don't have much access to servos / arduinos etc (save for online which might not arrive in time) So failing that, maybe some kind of spring trap in front?

Any ideas?
