So yesterday i picked up a blade for my garden tracor for super cheap. It came with a mount but does not fit my tractor - No problem, i have a welder and can fabricate one. I am trying to decide how i want to raise and lower the blade when reversing or not using it. My options are as follows: Electric linear actuator : $40, or a 1500lb electric winch: : $70.

Cost aside, which route would be better? the linear actuator is only good to 250lb. The blade only weighs 70, but the angle at which it would be pushing up might make it seem more.

Thoughts?

garden tractor plows are usually lifted by the mower deck lift linkage. if thats not an option i would go for the winch, keep hardware around to fix the cable when you wear through it.
>>
>>930452
Sometimes there is even a handle you pull. Probably the cheapest option....
>>
>>930495
If the tractor has an option for a plow on it theres normally already a bracket on the deck lever that you can attach to the blade.
Mine has one in the middle of the deck attachment points and pushes a rod forward to lift the plow.

Try brushing that area througroughly with isopropanol, managed to save a laptop after a spill once that way. Although it doesn't look good.

What's on the other side of the board, specifically right underneath where it says "atxpower"?

It looks like a component on the bottom of the board overheated. You can see the heat damage to the pcb there, where it turned the fiber board brown.
>>
>>931547
looks like you burned an smd component on the other side of the board. It's a bit hard to replace and not worth the effort. But if you can find if and have the willpower and steady hands of an owl eye surgeon, yeah you could fix it.

Hey, so I got one of the walls in my apartment soundproofed. The people who did it were a company but I am not sure they did it right. Here's why. I got some foam like the one in the picture and put it on the whole surface of the wall. Thing is the people who did the work put the foam with the creases facing the wall and over that a layer of acoustic rigips. I want to know whether having the creases facing the wall and having a layer of rigips over it does anything or it's pretty much useless. thanks

>>
>>931440
It is not useless, just less effective
>>
Correct, the nubs are there to deflect sound waves in different directions. The flat side will deflect but not break-up the waves quite as effectively
>>
Did the company politely explain that acoustic foam is not for soundproofing, and only installed it after you insisted that you knew better? That might explain why they stapled it to your wall haphazardly, they figured you wouldn't care.

Hey /diy/, a meme page on Facebook posted some plush Gondolas.

General question, but do y'all work fast or slow? I'm a slow, methodical worker and that got me in a little trouble when I did painting, but I've found it helps me just in general. I do things right the first time instead of just rushing it.

What about y'all?

Need help. The only thing that seems obviously fucked up is the melted black plastic on the coil.
This is the circuit board from a Black and Decker BNA17 minifridge.
My girlfriend said it just stopped working one day and I want to see if I can fix it.

>>
Fix/replace the coil then
I have no expertise on fridges, so I cant suggest anything
>>
>>931526
Inductors / transformers don't just burn out by themselves. They do burn our but something else is the cause, like a short somewhere.
Also it's a pretty day picture and form here the coil looks like it might not be damaged just china glued (the black stuff the use for smd chips)
Anyhow before you replace it check the rest of the board for shorts.
>>
>>931532
I don't have any experience working on circuitry, but I don't see any other spots on the board that look blown. Any help is appreciated, I'm combing over it for blown components right now

What sort of background reading would I need? I'm good with OOP fundamentals and soldering. Poor at reading schematics. Good with deduction and logic flow. Never built anything robotic. Love working out of daw's and have a firm grasp on midi. Thoughts? Any good books or reference manuals related to building this project would be appreciated.

I'm interested in getting into woodworking. I'm looking for a project book that delineates which tools/machinery are needed along with step-by-step instructions for making each project.

Anyone know of something that fits the bill?

I would suggest looking at ana-white.com
A lot of books don't deliniate machinery, because a lot can be done multiple ways. eg tablesaw/bandsaw/handsaw can all cut tenons well. if you're careful, pretty much everything you do on a drill press can be done by hand (just with more inaccuracy and difficulty). Hell, there is no woodworking that was invented after the invention of electricity that can't be done entirely with hand tools.
>>
>>931317

>can't be done entirely with hand tools

Power tools help enjoy the process though.

I once built a gate to keep the dogs outside and it took me 2 hours because I was using a handsaw to cut green heart lumber. After getting a shitty ryobi 5 1/2" cordless power saw another gate for a larger door literally takes less than 30 mins. While I enjoy using a hand saw it can get tedious when making multiple cuts of the same size in a hardwood

Hello /diy/namos:

I'm looking for a way to cook food when SHTF/Kali Yuga/winter storms take out the electricity. Is there a way I can use a single-burner camper stove indoors or will the monoxide make me an hero?

If I cannot, can you recommend a good SHTF indoor cooking method?

Picture completely unrelated.

used most everything during various disagreements with landlords/utility suppliers, etc. - from single portable camping butane stoves (but dont, complete PITA; takes fucking years, and boiling point is a Zen-Like illusion, just over the horizon, reachable only the next life) to full-on multi-element gas ranges, converted for bottle gas (the big fuckers, 5-25KG). This, I recommend, when maybe not 100-pro legal, needs an adapter/presssure reduction valve/large bottled gas supplier, etc.

Not dead yet either AFAIK, monoxide is over-rated. Wouldn't run a generator indoors tho.
>>
>>930775
Given that altitude figures into cooking ability, where are you at? What's your altitude there?

I'm at 3000 ft, so I don't think a single camp burner is going to affect my ability to boil stuff that much.

You don't have natural gas to the house out where you live? Maybe get a tank installed and fill it up propane? Its easy to find and is easily used in indoor cooking without killing yourself. Can also be used to power a backup generator, water heater, clothes dryer, all that shit. They are common for places out in the sticks in my state. Depending on usage and tank size one tank can last months.

Inspired by the dumpster diving thread and the interesting salvage people find but may not necessarily find a use for.

Considering people around /diy/ tend to be pretty thrifty and also have an eye for the 'potentially useful', does anyone in here dabble in selling scrap metals or electronic scrap to scrapyards and recycling companies?

I've been considering dabbling in it a bit, since I consider the value of my labor negligible because I like fiddling with things in my spare time, like taking things apart or stripping wire while I watch the youtubes, and sorting items is basically how I relax.

I don't expect to make any significant amount of money, it's more just for fun and to get rid of scrap wires that I felt bad just tossing, and it makes me feel a bit better knowing it may be used and won't end up in the lungs of some poor Chinese or Pakistani or Ghanese e-waste salvager.

For those who do sell scrap, how far do you go for it? Melting down circuitry for gold? Dumpster diving? Ever buy cheap shit at thrift stores just to make a few cents profit? Just idly stripping wires? Not even bothering stripping wires? Illegally melting pennies (pre-1982 especially)? Even more illegally stealing copper pipe?

What materials do you salvage? Just metals? Plastics? Whole components?

Or, alternately, no one here gives a shit about scrapping for money and the thread dies.

First rule, stealing scrap from buildings is the lowest of low, you could easily cause tens of thousands of dollars of damage for a hundred profit. Scum of the earth!

OP here, I agree with you, for the record.

Particularly satisfying when it results in the thief getting fried. Still costly, but satisfying.
>>
>>930136
Fucking this. I used to board houses when the bank took them to help deter theft. Sometimes the houses were vacant and stripped when we got there, sometimes for months. At some point somebody realized that you can get "a lot" of money for the water meters. They started pulling the meters out of houses before the water got cut off, and since the meter is before the house shut off valve water just started dumping into the house. We found a basement where something must have got sucked over the floor drains because it just kept filling up. 10+ feet of water before it started dumping out the side door. One was running under a raised foundation and washed it out.

I need about 3000-5000 of them, and they need to be actual ping pong balls, not those crummy plastic beer pong balls.

Anyone know where I might find them on the cheap? They can be either intact or broken/dented, and they don't have to be tournament-grade high quality like pic related. As long as they're not going to cost too much. Any ideas?

I need them for a project, not for playing ping pong, so the condition/shape of the ball doesn't matter. Still, I need them to be made of actual ping pong ball material, which comes in a range of three stars (one star being the cheapest). Plenty of what I see online is just beer pong balls made of the wrong material, which looks like a very shiny plastic. I can't use those. The balls I need are made of celluloid or nitrocelluoid.
