Seems more like /po/ territory.
ok, I'm getting sick of this: where the hell can I find a 1 inch lock/shank/lever/slipjoint/wtfidk kind of nut for a plumbing fitting to go over a 3/4 nipple? I just need a low profile nut for a little plumbing job.
Have been to Lowe's, HD, Ace, nobody has anything.

So I have several SAS->FC bridges bought for just $20/each. My first step after receiving the package was to crack open one of them and see whats inside.
Ok, there are SAS and FC controller chips, 4Gb of DDR2 RAM, and some sort of CPU covered with this heatsink which is likely to be glued to the CPU's IHS. How do I remove it undestructively to identify the CPU as I wonder if this board worthy fiddling with it to try and make mini server (there are also a bunch of 2.5mm pitch pins and unsoldered pads for what I think could be mini pci-e connectors) ?
>>930884
looks like they are just held on by those plastic clips
>>930907
Removed clips right away. The heatsinks sit on the chips rather firmly to try and pry off the lids with miniature steel hooks
Have you tried isopropyl alcohol?
Hey /dyi,
Anybody know how to make a relatively simple amplifier?
I don't need anything fancy, but as long as it has a preamp and potentiometer I'm relatively happy. Trying to make little portable set of speakers.
Post those schematics up!
>relatively simple amplifier
I got a 2N3904 right here bro
>>930341
How did you build it?
>>930349
A 2N3904 is a single transistor, and isn't useful as an amplifier by itself. Most amps use a lot of transistors. It's not a simple subject. This is a website I have been gleaning information from about amplifiers for over a year now.

My room looks very bland and depressing - there's nothing on the walls; it looks like some kind of a prison cell.
What kind of /diy/ projects would you recommend to decorate my room a bit? Something which involves space, science, tech and /v/idya related photos, led lights, RaspberryPi (I have one), speakers, etc. would be nice.
The only thing you listed as having is a Pi.
Do you have other supplies? A budget? Any tools? Access to someone else's tools and knowledge of how to use them?
FFS give us something.

Which utility knife is best utility knife? It's only for cutting up boxes but I want one that's gonna be comfy to hold and won't break on me.
Well, I got a 3 pack of Husky folding u-knives for 5 bucks, so I'd go with that.
I have a Fastback II and it's fantastic. If it's something you have to hold onto for a long time, that's the one I'd recommend. A lot of the others I've used (olfa etc) aren't friendly to the sale of your hand.

Anyone here an HVAC tech? I'm wondering if my circuit is ok and I don't go back to class until Tuesday. This was from my third day so consider that when you see how crude this is.
>first pic is wiring diagram
>second pic will be my drawing of how I did it in class
>third will be my simplification of it.
>>930235
This is the circuit in question
schematic looks sorta awright. i'm not looking at the last 2 drawings coz it's too much work.
- the transformer is drawn wrong. there's no secondary coil.
- having a legend is stupid; you have to keep shifting your gaze between the wiring and the legend.
- the compressor uses two different contacts, which doesnt make much sense, unless you wanna isolate it for safety - in case some idiot wants to work on it while powered.
What is this?

Anyone familiar with insulation and/or roofing?
>Here is my dillema:
This house is a bit over 100 years old, there is a living space in the attic, however it gets over 100 degrees in the summer, and cold in the winter (California). I've gutted the old Celotex walls and ceiling and haven't found any moisture issues or a drop of water even with all the rain we've been getting so the roofing is in good shape. There is no plywood or any sheathing on the roof or walls, just planks on ceiling with an inch space between them, paper & shingles. And clapboards on outside of house.
I can afford rigid foam, and a bit of canned spray, and plan on cobbling between the rafters and box in the attic.
I want to insulate that attic space and I am going to replace the knob & tube wiring... the issue is, the house breaths very and I feel that insulating that attic space is going to create problems with moisture, leaks etc? (fairly hot, dry climate though)
Hoping someone has experience with this.
Keep it a cold roof system don't make it a living space
I think you have to put vapor barrier up too to keep the moisture away from the foam and outer wall/roof. You will also need a way to ventilate hot air in the summer.
It's not a good idea to do insulate that.
Hi /diy/. /mu/ /gg/ here.
I tried asking multiple people about this issue, and all of them had different answers:
>1. I need to know about soldering for guitar modifications. /mu/ was not much help on this. I want to replace the neck pickup of my red strat with a Seymour Duncan Hot Rail. However, I also have heard that it may be smart to put it in the blonde strat instead and use the Gold Lace in the red strat neck posistion instead. I have no idea how to solder, and I know that doing it myself would save me money. I've googled some instructions, but I need to have more opinions about specifics (place to do it, all tools needed, what is safe and what is not). Anybody have any opinions on this?
>2. I had put heavy blues gauge strings on my blonde strat. The end result of doing this is the changed tension on my neck and bridge. This has enabled my whammy to move both up and down on the strat. Is this a safe move? It's been fine for the last 4 months and still plays just as good. I'm just hoping that I'm not fucking up the truss rod somehow.
>pic related guitars in question.
>>926757
you'll need a soldering iron, soldier, flux, and a safe place to do it minimum..
practice soldiering wires of similar size together before you try it on the guitar...
once you can make a nice shiny looking soldier joint reliably then try swapping the expensive pickup out...
also the increased tension pulled your bridge up... it will increase the action towards the higher frets on the neck... probably not fantastic for your neck since it changes the angle the strings pull at slightly...
fwiw if you want that affect without changing strings why not just loosen the spring bracket on the back of the guitar? or go from the standard 3 springs to 2?
>>926759
+1 to all of this. Congrats on having a go. Put it in whatever guitar YOU want to.
For later, ignore 99.9% of advice about guitar related tone chasing. Just practice more. Can't say that enough.
One day you will remove the duncan pup and either put the stock one or a lowish output pup in.
>>926759
+2 this. Also, if you didn't want the bridge to be up just tighten the screws holding the springs in the back.

Hello /diy/,
I was wondering if somebody knows a reason why a LED flashes and an overcurrent protection device triggers when I connect my lamp to neutral and phase but works totally fine when neutral and phase is switched?
I don't get why something like this is possible with AC..
I am really interested in your answers, thanks!
Because that's how LED drivers work.
New to the job, asked my boss what the order was for connecting a machine to the 3-phase supply. Because you know, brown, grey, black and earth. Bit confusing when you're new to things.
Get told it doesn't matter, only the Earth needs to be in the correct clamp.
Fear this is some kind of test, or like getting sent for the rubber nails. Doubtful look is noticed, get told, just connect the fucking things.
All hooked up, stand behind the door, breaker in hand, turn on the power. Machine works fine. 3-phase does not give a shit. Only matters for feeding a motor because you need to know what direction it will spin.
>>927526
3-phase is different in that all of the non-earth lines have a potential. My best guess if this is a simple incandescent is that the neutral is tied to earth somewhere in the lamp, which is unlikely.
What's a good way for me to build out this small cabinet over the refrigerator to be flush with the pantry cabinet? It would be easy if I was putting a trim panel on the right of the refrigerator opening, but I don't think I will be doing that (nor do I think I have the extra 3/4 inch for it). These are stock cabinets, so a deeper cabinet isn't offered.
Don't put any cabinets above your fridge, no one uses them. Most people are too short.
>>929105
that's why i want to build it out further, so it's usable. i think it looks terribly unfinished with the pantry and no cabinet above the refrigerator
>>929108
it would look horrible just to have that one cabinet extended.
