CNC is coming along nicely. Just need the three steppers, and a way to cut the MDF. Can I use a jigsaw to cut curves and other shapes on mdf?

Of course you could use a jigsaw. Just be careful.

Hi /diy/
I'm in SW Ohio and I just got into rock hounding. Where I'm at, we have a lot of granite, rose quartz, calcite, gypsum, flint, geodes, and many many fossils (brachipods and various corals). I am totally new to the whole process, but I went rock hunting in a creek bed and found some cool stuff. I'd ideally like to polish my finds and make some jewelry, but I'm a college student on a budget with limited access to stone working tools like rock saws. I'd like some advice and tips on how to make a limestone/dirt covered hunk of granite into something pretty and shiny, and how to best turn a nice piece of horn coral, quartz, and so on into a necklace or earring. So far I've been cleaning them with vinegar and a needle, and working with sandpaper of various grits, but it's slow work. I'm a bit apprehensive to get HCl or Oxalic acid, but mostly since I'm not much of a hardware person.

I am putting plywood shelves in my closets that look something like this. The shelves are 5/8 plywood, and I face nailed a furring strip to the front to get it rigidity. The supports along the back and sides are 5/8 plywood about 3 1/4 inches in height. The issue is, even after brad nailing the shelves into the supports, the middle of the shelf at the front (away from the wall) still has some give to it. I'd prefer not to put in the metal brackets at this point because I'd then have to shim it out from the wall because the support is already there. I was thinking of using the closet rod itself as a support. Is there a way for me to rigidly attach the closet rod directly to the shelf with it still being an inch or two under the shelf itself?

>>
>>931636
Forgot to add, the two longest shelves around around 7 and 9 ft respectively.
>>
>>931637
That's a crazy span for 5/8 plywood. Should have used solid wood but... I would say you need to add a post or something in the middle to support the shelf. What kind of closet rod are you using? A wooden one will sag like crazy just like the shelf.
>>
>>931647
I was going to use the tabard ~1 inch metal rod they sell at Lowes, but it only comes in 8 feet. So I might just buy some ~1 inch EMT conduit which comes in 10 ft sections.

To add, the shelves are about 13 inches deep.

Just wondering if these wires arr wired right? because whenever i switch the light off the breakers flip. Any help is greatly apreciated.

>>
what the fuck are you trying to do here?
a light switch?
so what is this?
at a guess, power cable, switch cable and lamp cable?
you need 4 terminals, not 3.
all cpc (earth) together
line (brown or red) from power goes to switch (brown or red)
switch (blue or black) (wrap a bit of brown electrical tape around the wire) goes to bulb (brown or red)
bulb (blue or black) goes to power (blue or black)
box is plastic so it doesn't need to be earthed.

blues should be nowhere near the red if the red is power feed
you have the bulb and the switch across the power, when the switch is off (open) the light is still getting power, when the switch is on (closed) the power is directly shorted.

you have the switch and bulb in parallel, they need to be in series.

Hey DIY, Where can I buy semi-thick metal foil? I need a small, thin sheet of metal for a project. It needs to be thin enough that I can write on it with a nail, but thick enough that it doesn't get pierced in the process. Any idea what a good thickness would be, or where I could buy some?

I am growing a lemon tree (the small kind) in a pot and although its had some difficulty, it now appears to be doing ok and has grown about as big as it can get in its current pot. Some leaves turn upside down and one or two have browned or dried, I suspect from the intense heat here, however I wish to repot it - its summer here, the plant is no longer flowering but does have some slowly growing fruit thats been growing for several months now - is it ok to repot, what are some tips for putting it int a bigger pot, and how do I get it out of its current pot with minimal damage? Any tips?

As someone who knows nothing about gardening I would smash the old pot, put a bit of dirt in the new pot, put the plant in, add more dirt

Hello everyone. I want to know how to make grow-in-water toys. I have experience using silicone and resin and I have a 3d printer to work with. I already have the matrix for the toy, but I don't really know wich material I must use and how. I can't find any intructions of making it and wikipedia says they are made from a superabsorbent polymer, but doesn't say wich one. My only source says they are maded of polyacrylonitrile, ethylene glycol and glycerol, but -again- doesn't say how to combine them.

Can someone help me or direct me with a link?
7 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Update: I find a new recipe:

"[...] a mixture of sodium polyacrylate, polyvinyl acetate (a polymer used as a binder) and ethylene vinyl acetate (a polymer used to mold the toy into whatever shape it’s supposed to be)."
>>
>>931259
I think they are just regular foam, compressed and coated with a glycerol and ethylene glycol shell (which dissolves in water). I could be thinking of a different one.

This is my first /diy/ thread so forgive me if it's not good format. My brother and I were thinking about how we could make a catamaran by ourselves using pvc pipe as the outriggers and some sort of metal or wood frame and a sail. We did some displacement calculations and the size/amount of pvc we would need wouldn't be cost effective. Any ideas of other ways to make a catamaran? Pic related, found on internet

>>
>>931142
Yeah, I've had this on my possible project list for a while.
Basically, the best/most cost effective design is >>931274, but with skin on frame. you can build a skin on frame design for <$100 in parts, it's some pine wood, cloth (canvas is heavy, but cheap and works (from painter's dropcloths) but nylon is better, will be most expensive though), twine, staples/needle/thread, and a sealer. I've heard good results from deck sealers. Use mortise and tenons and lash them together.

Then, add 3 pipes across to anchor the sides together, add a leeboard to each kayak/canoe, and anchor a mast to the center pipe. Then add webbing between the pipes.
Mast/boom will probably be the hardest thing to do.
LOTS of displacement from kayak/canoes.

Where can I get raw glass wool, like the stuff they use in insulation? I need it without all the colorants and binders they add to consumer insulation, preferably for cheap.

The plan is to heat it up so the fibers will stick together when I compress it, but additives will mess that up. pls halp /diy/

hydroponics "rock wool"
>>
>>930092
also its basically just fibreglass anon. just buy spray fibreglass. but why would you compress it? are you trying to sculpt something out of glass and think you can just compress it then hit it with a blow torch?
>>
>>930096
I need the wool for its low density and bulkiness.

I'm trying to see if I can heat up the wool, compress it while it's still hot so the fibers fuse together, and turn it into a rigid material.

Tamper resistant/security hex head. You can get a driver that will fit from most hardware stores, usually in a box with a shitload of other security driver bits (torx, tri-wing, torq-set, spanner head, polydrive and so on)
>>
>>928498
>>928496
Alternatively, jam a flathead into it and snap the security pin out.

Then you can use an ordinary allen key.
>>
Deez...

Tamper proof security bit, you can pick up packs of driver heads that have a bunch of weird security heads in em for like $10, and imo its totally worth it.

I want to make an air filter using water as the filtration medium. I was going to try making a small prototype before making something bigger, so I was thinking of using a 2 gallon bucket and some acrylic tubing. Would a cpu fan be powerful enough to push a column of air down through a tube through the center of the bucket and into the water? I was thinking of a 1-1.5 inch tube.

>>
>>927893
Also, what would be a good power supply for the fan? I have some spare phone chargers, but they either have too low voltage output, or too low/high amperage output. For a typical cpu fan that wants 0.5, 0.7, or 1.0 amps, how many amps would be too much to power it?
>>
>>927893
There is no way a cpu fan can do it.

the humidity will drastically increase in your room as water will act as a humidifier.
also a CPU fan will never be powerful enough, it has design flaws that makes it incompatible with pressure difference.
i'm not sure but maybe use pic related ?
you'll also need an air stone to make the bubbles smaller.
I'm thinking of making an electrostatic precipitator, maybe it would be a good alternative for you too.

Hey /diy/ need your guys help. Just came back from break to my college dorm, and apparently the landlord removed all the tenants unopened rooms doorknob on the inside. They caught one group with an unlocked room, my apartment was using the room for storage originally and got in by using a door hanger. Question is how to I get into the room now since our last way won't work anymore. (Pic provided is what the handle looks like as well as door frame around it)
