Hey /diy/

I recently purchase an older work boat and I have plans of re-purposing her has a weekend warrior fish killer.

This is going to involve a moderate amount of welding though, and I've spent no time on aluminum. Although not a welder by trade, I've spent years sticking, wire feeding, and brazing on steel and ss. I know aluminum is a different monster, but I don't feel like it's out of the realm of reality for me to learn on my own.

I'm comfortable with weld prep. My biggest questions are what kind of output voltage should I be running to get good penetration on 1/4" and 3/16" material? What size wire should I be running? I was looking at .030" 4043. Does my gas choice differ between when I'm running the spool gun vs tig? I was planning on running pure argon, but could I use C25 while on the spool gun?

I'm setup with an xmt350 and spoolmatic 30A, although since the boat doesn't fit inside my small garage shop most of the time the 30A will be hooked up to my trailblazer 325.

Any help is appreciated, along with general aluminum discussion.

What will you be welding onto your boat?
Cant really help with your question just curious.

I'm rebuilding one of the jet pumps because the old housing has a crack in it but the newer housings have a different mounting pattern and different OD. So I'm going to cut out a 2'x2' piece of the transom, patch it, and then cut out the proper mounting pattern. I'm also going to run hull stiffeners along the sidewall mostly for aesthetics, but to give a little rub protection to against trees and stuff when I'm moored up in a river. Plus there are a handful of small drill holes to fill.
>>
Alright so a guy is selling this 16,5 ft aluminum hull for like 300 USD, it was for a project he never got around to. I'm visiting tomorrow to check it out. What do I look out for? It's home welded but he claims its very well done, so let's assume that it is.
I already know there are "pinhole" corrosion in the hull.
Only two pictures, sorry.

How the fuck do I properly seal this goddamn gaping huge fucking hole next to my dishwasher?

Fucking American cockroaches coming in non fucking stop hence the diatomaceous earth
34 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
it's pointless coz roaches will just find a way around, like crawling under the dishwasher. your problem is not the hole, it's the roaches. you can fix that, you cant plug every hole in the house.
>>

>coming in non fucking stop hence the diatomaceous earth

are you saying it doesnt work?

i had high hopes for it maybe just wait day or two(?) till it dries them out
>>
unlike what another poster said you can seal up your house but it takes a lot of work. You should start by pulling the washer out of its home and uncovering what is really back there. Newer houses are better sealed houses, if it is an old house you probably have a lot of work ahead of you

You are on a stranded island with a plane that crashed on the beach. There are about 20 other surviving passengers.

You are not allowed to look at any pictures of a plane, boat, or tools to referance how to build craft to escape. Only your memory.(That means no Googleing) But you have to survive and build a craft to escape the island.

Explain how you would Do It Yourself.

>I would try to find a map in the Pilots to have an Idea where the hell my island is.

I would probably be able to build a plane out of the scrap metal of the crash, considering I have a perfect memory.
1. A roter in the back
2. Horizontal wing flaps on both wings to control up and down.
3. Vertical wing flap in the back to steet left and right.
4. Strings to pull on and steer it
5. To get some speed for takeoff I could imagine making a pettaling station for 2 other men on the plane moving the wheels if I could find some gears and an chain (I guess I could make thoes out of wood with my knife I sharpened from that hull of the craft.

As long as I can get some coconuts and fish i should be ok. Rain gods plz give rain. Fresh water to drink.

Start emergency transmitter and wait for rescue to show up.

Maybe make some fires to become more visible.

What? That's no fun?

I lash together a cruise ship from shipping containers and imitation crab meat. And just to fuck with you I brought along my solar powered waterproof raspberry pi arduino with all of wikipedia as text with ascii art images to help

You are a delusional motherfucker and that has no chance of working, you need to use more shipping containers

First I look through the luggage and cargo area to see if some guy had a satellite phone
If there is no phone I try to find radio equipment or try to salvage it somehow (I will figure it out as I go along)

Hey, kinda new to 4chan so don't know if /diy/ is the right place for this.

Just finished high-school, planning on following medical career (6 years college in my country). A guy online talked to me about forex trading and that it could be profitable.
Worth the time spent on learning it? I could use some extra money.
Thnx in advance

You're not serious, right?
The sling is one of the simplest weapons mankind ever crafted, and this is just a sling on a stick. Wood and leather haven't changed since it's heyday, the single thing you should have to spend more than ten seconds thinking about if you're a reenactor is what kind of cord they'd have access to.

Throw spears at niggas, works much better and easier

In terms of the staff-sling, looking at about broomstick length or around 2m of fairly tough, flexible timber (oak, yew, hickory or spotted gum) and 60-100cm of the sling component with a pouch (hemp rope and leather) which is just attached via a hole in the stick
>>
>>1021517
Find a branch or cut down a tree for the stick.
Kill a cow for the leather.
Make the rope out of whatever plants were available.
Find a rock to sling

Does anyone have experience working with carbon fiber?

I had an idea to make a carbon fiber link bracelet but I have no idea if this is feasible. Think like a stainless steel watch band, only of carbon fiber. There would be lots of little links and pins, possibly all made of carbon fiber. I undoubtedly think will mean it is expensive. But can carbon fiber take something like a small hole and a pin driven through it to attach to other links? Conversely, are there any chain or interlocking link styles that don't require a pin to secure like in a watch band?

Picture would be the closest thing I could find to what I'm going for. I like it, but it just doesn't have that carbon fiber feel or visible open weave I'm looking for.
5 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Also, would it be possible to get a "block" of carbon fiber and machine it into the final product? Would this reduce its structural properties, unlike the resin molded products?
>>
Here's why that would be incredibly difficult

http://www.accutektesting.com/about-us/blog/tips-for-machining-carbon-fiber

It would have to he carbon fiber with an insanely tight weave to do even the simple things you want from it.
>>
>>1021443
Do you think it's possible to mold some sort of interlocking link that wouldn't require drilling or milling?

Hey there /diy/nosaurs. I have an old skateboard that i want to convert into a cruiser. I looked into a lot of the specifics and based personal preferences i have created a shopping list of items that would be good to buy. Problem is that i have such little expereince with boards that i really don't know if i'm throwing away all my money here. My point in posting this is to get some tips and help making my shopping list cheaper and to assure whether or not this is a smart project. All help is appreciated!

Houses have this water pressure reducing valve.

So I was thinking. Why not small turbine generator instead?

The power you get would be Meh, but it could be used to charge something.
15 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1021269
The issue with a turbine is what happens when your water pressure drops?
You won't get any free energy nor any water.
>>
>>1021269
so you have water flowing all the time? and it's free?

there are non electric sump pumps that work on city pressure
>>
>>1021269
Wouldn't it only work every time you used the taps or whatever?

I got these RGB led strips with remotes.

There's only 16 preset colors available. But technically it should be possible to make them change color via slider/knob?

I also have these Ikea Dioder RGB strips that lets me do just that.
Maybe I could use those (wired) remotes to work for my wireless remotes?

I can provide photos of the gear if needed.

The strips are probably individually addressable LEDs. That being the case depending upon the controler (microcontroller) you can make an infinite number of patterns. I really doubt your remotes are going to be compatible. You could always do it yourself like I did.
>>
>>1021314
If there's only preset colors and no animations, why would you assume it's individually addressable? It's almost definitely just parallel R, G, and B with a common ground.
>>
>>1021367
To clarify, when I say no animations, what I mean is nothing like "chase" or "rainbow" or any of the other hallmark built-in animations of an individually addressable system. The remote shown only has animations that affect the entire strip.

Any of you fine gents ever install a gas fireplace? I moved into a new place with one installed but I'll be damned if I can find the spot where you put the key to turn it on. I thought some previous owner may have just covered it up so I ripped the old tiles off but there is no valve. It wouldnt be inside the box or something silly like that would it? That switch on the left starts a little fan inside, presumably for windy nights with possible backdraft.

So as you see the green part got destroyed time by time. and after my laptop fell hard the corner (red part) brake from the main structure and is one with thes screen frame.its hard to lose and open the laptop and i fear the time that the screen cables get damaged bcause thier showing.and oneday i gave it to a workshop to fix the screen(another common story) and he gleued the part with silicon -_- that brake off and still stuck in the part.
i came to ask what glue or anything to fix this part by myself.

So, I just moved in to a new apartment, and I seem to have made a mistake by setting up my bed with the head right underneath a window. There's no good way to rearrange the room at this point, but if I have to to improve my sleep I'll consider it.

I want to do something to block out light and sound from coming through the bottom half of the window. I'm hoping this will make the bed area feel more secure and peaceful.

The best idea I've come up with is to cut a piece of wood (32.75''x32.75''x1.5-2'' [this leaves an 1/8 of an inch wiggle-room]), paint it, possibly apply some other material to either or both sides of it, and fit it right into where the window is like a plug. I thought to keep it secure I might use some velcro.

Do you guys have any better ideas? What material if any should I apply to the wood to increase soundproofing? Should I apply weatherstripping to the edges? Is this even going to help much or am I wasting my time?

don't waste time, just rearrange your room. there is no easier solution than this.

unless you live in a dumpster, in that case kill yourself to solve the problem
>>
>>1021088
>block out light
Curtains/shutters/blinds/etc. Take your pick
>block out sound
Earplugs. Literally every other solution is either absolutely retarded, impractical, impossible to do without skills and tools, ridiculously expensive, doesn't work, or all of the above.

Moreover, you'll get used to light and sound anyway.
>>
>>1021099
It'll be worth it for the light blocking alone I think.

As for the sound, I'll be satisfied if it even muffles it. I don't need 100% soundproofing.

As for tools/skills, All I need is a piece of wood cut to measurement and to stick some velcro on it at least. That doesn't seem hard.

Thanks for the suggestion that I'll get used to it regardless.

Any art project kills the magazine other than framing the whole mag without damage.
