Hi /diy/, i am about to invest ~$20,000 or less in building a commercial greenhouse on a virgin plot of land in Alaska.
it needs to be around 2,500 square feet. i'll be using automated fan systems attached to thermometers, coupled with well-placed ventilation in sides and roof to cool the greenhouse and provide adequate air flow.
my biggest design problem at this time has to do with heating and cooling. how to design the greenhouse so that i don't end up with pockets of hot and cold air? how to keep it uniform? once you get over a certain square footage, you cant simply blow air through the whole thing, the cool air heats up by the time it gets into the middle because its too big and hot.
i was thinking of making it very elongated, and instead of the exhaust fans pulling air in all the way down at the end, have them periodically spaced along one of the long walls and have vent opening on the opposite walls.
the only problem then is that i have to buy more fans, set up more thermometers, and use more electricity, upping my initial costs. not to mention ill have to frame those extra fans into something solid!
what do?
alaska provides an interesting challenge for commercial greenhouses because the summer season has nearly 20+ hours of daylight every day, and the winter has as little as three hours of daylight per day.
In order to induce flowering in my plants, i'll need to cover the greenhouse every day at certain points in the grow cycle during the summer.
i'll also have to use supplemental lighting and a furnace of some kind in the winter.

Most large greenhouses do what you're describing, with fans every 7 feet or so on the side walls.
For winter heating you'll probably want to go with something reliable. I've seen commercial greenhouses use basically oversized radiators stretched along the walls. Maybe work out something like that where you pump hot water into a radiator.
Alaska isn't the best place to greenhouse due dark/cold autums-winters-spring. The cooling part is somewhat easy, large commercial greenhouses uses evaporate cooling, which is cheap. You can buy these supercheap from alibaba.com

You may want to look into chinese style greenhouses
They use an earth or brick wall to the north that adds insulation and thermal mass, so you have a longer grow season.
They usually have automated isolation covers for the nights, so the temperature stays up.
http://www.lowtechmagazine.com/2015/12/reinventing-the-greenhouse.html
You can supplement the thermal mass by adding water containers in front of the north wall.
Bonus point for using them to grow fish and establish a aquaponic system.
For heating and light, you have several options.
Energy from the grid will cost you big time.
Solar will be mainly there, when you have enough light anyways, so you would need a big battery bank, that will be expensive.
A small scale hydro electric turbine could supply you with sufficient, reliable electricity run a big number of grow lamps, if you have a suitable stream nearby.
A biogas reactor can supply a gas powered generator which in turn produces electricity for lights, heat and even CO2
You can also build a rocket mass heater and use wood for fuel.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gl2xIJcZuyk
Another possibility is building a passive solar greenhouse adding isolated thermal mass underground and heating it up by pumping hot air from the top of the greenhouse inside, whenever the sun is heating up the air in your greenhouse.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kje2UESRE9A
Your air inlet should be going through a long pipe buried underground, so the air is preheated in winter and cooled in summer by the ambient temperature of the earth.
I wish you all the best with your project! Keep us updated!
Hey diy.need some ideas to trigger a spark.i need to build something garden related to fill this aesthetic gap in my back stairs.the "hole" is about 3.5 x 3.5.im going to build a deck here so i need to incorporate that into/around it eventually.im thinking stair planters, maybe a garden box.i have 3 days off, tools and lots of scrap wood and hardware.im googling but not getting inspiration.any suggestions?
And fine, ill spend some of my time off figuring out how to rotate pics properly.
You have untreated wood touching the ground there you degenerate, fix that first.
I just set this up and it works fine but I get some juice where I shouldn't. I haven't tried plugging to the grid yet, but when I switch on the batteries I read something like 1 volt in the red&black wires that I'm supposed to plug to the grid. If I touch the red wire with my finger I can feel a tiny bit of current, although I'm isolated from the ground. What is this faggotry ? All the connections are made with electrical tape which is kind of lame, but there's no short circuit as far as I can tell.
Plz halp
It seems that it might be because it's a switch with a pilot light. Fucking shit. Is this safe ?
You shouldn't be touching anything you tie into the grid anytime soon.
I need to create a software using Structured systems analysis and design method (SSADM), what class of software recommend me to create in one month?.
i have knowledge in Python and SQL
i'm just an amateur in the software development and this is my first time programming a software
>>1021782
SSADM sucks, use RUP
usually these kinds of exercises involve some sort of host-client type of thing, involving many interfaces and modules, so I suggest you make a website or something, such as a simple social media platform or shopping site.
JS front end, Python back end, and SQL database.
>>1021784
I am forced to use (Ssadm), because it is for a damn class
>>1021782
You might have better luck over on >>>/g/ about this, that's where the programmers hang out.
I'm not familiar with the SSADM model unfortunately, and I don't know what sort of scope you're looking at for the project. I'm going to guess small to medium since it's for a class.
Maybe a media organiser, e.g. search by tag, mime type (with wildcard e.g. video/* for all videos in the database), keep a list of folders (spec'd by user) and auto-scanning them.
If you wanted to be really fancy you could figure out a way for it to (assuming the filename is descriptive enough e.g. "full metal jacket (1987).mkv") automagically pull the rest of the information about the media from IMDB or wikipedia (e.g. automatically add screenwriter, director, actors, etc. to the database)
Any knappers on here? I'm trying to find the best commercially available tile to practice knapping with. There are all sorts of porcelain and ceramic tile available but most of them lack the fractious qualities of real stone. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
Also, knapping general?
I bought some porcelain tile and it's been alright, but you can see from the flake scars the material scales and breaks a little too easily.
>>1020412
Why not just get flint?
>>1020412
Could always try glass and I've also seen Agate as well knapped, dunno how they do it exactly but the principle should be similar
Hey /diy/, I do not know where the hell post this so I'll do here.
This is my new room and is so depressing to be in such a small space, so I need your help to give me some recommendations on how to decorate or things or put things away.
Brb, going to play harvest moon 64
Computer in closet, bed to the right of the door so you have the lamp to read under, and ffs get that shelf somewhere not in front of a window.
Additional ideas include shag carpeting, disco ball, purple lightbulbs and tasteful nude art on the wall.
The first glaring mistake is the cubby in front of the window. Get that moved somewhere else.
If the scene outside the window is decent, then put your workspace there if possible. Facing out a window while working increases productivity and mood.
Secondly, plants. Plants not only clean the air and regulate humidity, but they benefit mood.
Thirdly. You have a lot of unused space. Without a dimensioned layout, its hard to tell. But can your single bed fit against the entrance wall and closet wall? With the desk against the window youll have significantly more open space that isn't constrained by use items. In the open space put a bean bag chair or small comfortable chair to relax in.
So last weekend a pretty bad hail storm came through and damaged all my family's cars. Insurance came through and now my father wants to repaint my car with me (my first car, and he wants me to be a jack of all trades).
Currently my car is silver, pic semi related. We discussed painting it a better color, such as black or some other dark color. However, he said that there are limits on how much difference in colors the old paint and new paint can be. He sent me to figure out how different we can paint my car now, but I've searched Google and can't find anything remotely close to my question.
I looked on the drivers side door jamb and found that the Paint is "3D" and Trim is "GW," I'm not sure what other info is needed.
Can /diy/ help me figure out what "3D" and "GW" means? And how different can I paint my car?
Do you want to paint your car yourself?
>>1022841
Yes. My father and I will be doing as much of the work as we can ourselves. He's painted his truck before, so he knows how to do it and has all the tools, we just need to know more about how much we can change the color
What state do you live in, OP?
Guys I need help, I'm getting my dream job interview but haven't worked as carpenter for 2 years now, can anyone please explain how to do it properly? I've always worked with mitre saw/chop saw and that test will require me to do it without it, it has to be perfectly flush, very tight connection and I'm afraid that I will fail since haven't had contact with wood for a while and got rusty asf.
I beg you guys help me and I will pray for/give game on steam to you!
The carpentry trade test asks candidates to scribe a small piece of 5-7mm high value lacquered veneer to a jig and, to also cut an external mitre from a piece of 15mm veneered MDF to an upstand (without a chop saw). All power tools and PPE will be provided and you must bring your own hand tools.
>>1022700
Don't understand the first part (scribe veneer to a jig), but if I'm reading right about the 15mm MDF, it sounds like you have to just cut an angle, and it's veneered as well? Take a knife and a speed square, use the square to find your angle, scribe it fairly deeply on the veneer side so you don't tear it up, and try to keep the saw square (straight down) as you cut.
Like i said, I don't really understand because it sounds like either english isn't your native language, or this is a troll post.
>>1022707
I'm not sure about that veneer to jig too but it might mean that they want me to get a jig as a template to cut out veneer for some element.
Yes I'm not native speaker although I understand & have a vast array of words in my disposal I might sound a little off sometimes, still here in UK many people say I sound like American, it's funny since I'm Polish and it doesn't happen very often to have a verbal combination like that where I'm from.
It sounds like this test is designed to weed out incompetent people like yourself?
Hey /diy/ any lockpickers around here that can tell me the name of the last security pin in this picture? It's like a serrated pin but with angled cuts, it comes from a cisa standard electric gate lock. Also lock picking general?
>>1022393
nifty, havent seen one like that before. i would call it a double mushroom pin if trying to explain it.
>>1022508
>double-mushroom pin
Not a lantern pin? Cause it looks like a lantern...
I've got a sentry s3460 safe with key but I don't know the combination and the key doesn't seem to open it on its own. Do I have to start entering combinations brute force style with this, or does anyone else have any experience opening them with any better advice?
on a scale of 1 to fuck this, how difficult would it be to make a batch freezer?
on a scale of 1 to fuck this?
id rate: fuck me
>>1021767
Why don't you check local rest supply or auctions for slushie makers, or softserve machines.
I have seen them sell around here for $50-$500 depending on age and condition.
>>1021807
dunno if either of those would get cold enough for actual ice cream though.
I'd like to mount this 55" on a swivel above my fireplace because of the odd layout of my apartment, but there are no studs in the middle. The studs are on either side and 40" between them. Could I mount a swivel on one of the studs and push the TV to the center when not in use? Aren't there mounts built for this?
Obviously the lamps will go when I mount it
anyone?
>>1021758
Why the fuck do you have a fireplace with chimney that isn't made out of brick?
Would a dremel with a plunge router attachment suffice for making the occasional rabbet and dado joints? or should I go for a dedicated one?
I don't do enough woodworking to buy a table saw
if you wanna never do a dado joint again, sure its enough.
>>1021681
elaborate senpai
Dremel stuff is kinda expensive.
Checking UK amazon, its about 25quid. I can buy a big ass router for £30.
so im going to the desert and want to try to make cast iron deep dish pizza in a diy cardboard, tape and foil solar oven,
-im asking for your ideas and thoughts on this project-
1. solar oven
-something square/rectangle like this
-flat with four flaps so i dont have to rotate it to follow the sun throughout the day, ill be out and about fucking off
-it wont get very hot, i imagine 200-250degF
-i imagine keeping the foil flat and unwrinkled is very important
-all i have for a lid is some wrinkled turkey bags. I dont have a properly sized piece of glass nor do i know where to get one
-thick black cast iron pan i will cook in, will this prevent it from heating up quickly? should i use a thin black pie pan?
-should i put a black lid on it? does liquid need to cook/vent out of the sauce and/or dough?
2.pizzza
-sauce over the cheese so it can just cook and cook and cook without burning the cheese
-i will spread the dough thin, thin layer of cheese and thin layer of sauce because too much stuff in there and it just wont heat up
-sauce will have a bunch of veggies (toppings) cooked into it
would a thinner pan like this cook better than a thick cast iron?
i don't believe that
>>1021329
Heating the cast iron pan from the bottom is important. That way the heat will spread through the metal and radiate.
I've had great success making pizza in cast iron, but never done it in a solar cooker.
I'm curious, am I able to repair this?
the make and model is a philips shp-9500
the cans themselves play sounds just fine, but having this repaired would allow me to take these places without worrying about them breaking further.
btw looked all over the net and could not find any instructions on how to repair something like this
...can you zoom out a little?
other side for ref
19 years old, disabled physically (and a bit mentally) now but used to be a carpenters helper. What tools should I get for my small work bench? (going to be building furniture, hacking apart old furniture and rebuilding it, touching up, etc.) Someone else is going to be bringing me wood.
List I have so far is:
>12 set wood carving knife kit
>Stanley adjustable bench plane
>4'' vise
>6'' bench grinder
>Ryobi Circular Saw, 7 1/4'' Diablo Blade
>Black & Decker ROS 5'' (comes with a 10 pack of 5 inch discs wit grits ranging from 60-220)
>Black & Decker Drill 20V rechargeable Li-ion (with 10 piece double end screwdriving bit set and a 10 piece drill bit set, I'll get a screw gun for convenience when I have money)
>1 5/8 inch and 2 1/2 inch screws
I understand the market is oversaturated. I understand it is most likely I will end up homeless. Regardless I'd like to give it my best and would appreciate replies to achieve my goals. Worst case scenario the doctors write me up for disability.
One more thing, an old friend told me the B&D sander wont last and the discs go super easy, any experience with this? Is manual sanding the way to go?
Bump.
Any tips or advice? I'm thinking of starting on eBay and Amazon, use uShip to get stuff where it needs to go.
Current table I'm working on is just made of old 2x4's, the table I'm using was built from recycled laminate material, I just bought the compressed sawdust and glue stuff. Have had it for seven years now.
>>1021310
You might wanna try doing business locally on Craigslist before going "nationwide". Every time I've ordered something that came on a pallet shipping was like 200-400 bucks.
Build up some capital before you go all out. Hell, maybe use that those first couple of projects to increase your tool inventory. Miter saw, compressor, nail guns hell even more sanding discs.
Seriously though if possible having a part/full time job and and doing this after hours might be more financially feasible till you get a demand for your products to keep yourself afloat
Good luck OP
>>1021310
your mentally disabled, you wont be able to compete with non retarded competent woodworkers lol. your going to waste your time building shit that'll look like a retard built it. no one wants that
