So, the way my window and air conditioner are designed leaves a thin line between the two on both sides that gnats and other small bugs have been getting through.

I sprayed some gap-filling foam compound that dissolves with acetone into the cracks. Problem is I just noticed that it says "do not spray near electrical motors". Near an open flame, oven, etc. I can understand. But a 8000 btu air conditioner?

Dumb question: Should I be concerned about my window box air conditioner igniting my gap-filler?

Pic unrelated.

No.
The foam is only really flammable when it's curing; an evaporating solvent is used to keep it liquid in the can.
Wait a few hours for it to dry and the fumes won't be an issue, tho it may still smell a bit. It takes 24 - 48 hours to cure totally.

this. once cured (hardened) its not a problem.

The other one on the opposite side has also broken. They carry part of the weight when one puts weight on the side handles of the chair or when leaning back hence they had a lot of strain.

I realize any half arsed duct-tape solution and the like will not work since those carry a lot of stress. It would need a structural strength that can hold an adult's movements.

I've only thought of literally burning the separated ends into place and whatever happens but I don't know if there is a good alternative without any special equipment.

I'm an Electrician's apprentice, so I have a basic understanding of circuitry, and I can design a circuit to meet my needs. I have no experience with solar panels, though. I'm building an aquaponics system, and I need to run 3 small motors, and thought that I could do it off solar. Since the sun shines at least 8 hours here in Florida, I figured that I could charge a few batteries which would in turn run a few motors. Do I need some special electronics to keep the panel from blowing up when the sun isn't hitting it?

Im planning a turning rotating table for my small kitchen. Picture shows the idea. The table would be longer than the wall, hence the turning rotation. Is there a special ("lambo door") hinge for that. Or should I use normal hinge and attach a rotating plate on it (which kind)? The leg would be seprable.

Sup /diy/,

I'm looking to convert pic related into pic related, a 3 axis CNC for cutting plastics and thin steel and engraving objects. This was a printer that had a table that lifted via 4 leadscrews on each corner, which will allow me to work all sorts of weird sized objects. I have sourced all the parts I need for the rails and bearings for the X and Y axis, I'm pretty much ready to build except for the electronics side.

http://blog.cnccookbook.com/ has been my bible so far, but it is thin on control circuits. I have been able to find plenty of stepper drivers, but not a circuit that ties it all together. Anyone got any protips on controller resources or popular builds I can study?

Anyone else working on a CNC? What are your objectives and how are you achieving them?

I am also looking into CNC machines at the moment but for the purpose of milling PCBs, it requires very fine movement and high resolution so I'm not sure that a lot of sit CNC setups can achieve what I am looking for.

If you are looking at electronics I have to recommend the tinyg
http://synthetos.myshopify.com/products/tinyg
A lot of CNC controllers are tard-uino based and controlling 3+ axis and interpreting gcode pushes Arduino to its practical limit. The tinyg controller uses special motion planning algorithms to ensure super smooth translations for the purpose of CNC control.

Hi /diy/,

I'm thinking of making an electric incense heater/burner for resins (like pine, myrrh, frankincense) by embedding a length of kanthal wire in some kind of thermally conductive, but electrically insulating material. I expect the max temp of the heater will be less than 500F. Would plaster of paris be a good material for this? Or should I use some kind of castable refractory? Thanks.

>>
>>1023328
put some rock wool in it and it should be fine
>>
>>1023328
A relatively cheap way is a 50/50 mix (by volume not weight) of perlite and plaster of paris.

Hey /diy/hards,

I'm wanting to make an aviary, but I need it to be ultra portable, and collapsible. So probs modular panels and all that. I would like it to to also be easily set up. ( 1 person quick job)

I've envisaged some ways to do this, but would really love some alternate input. So how would you go about it?

Something roughly the size of the image.

Since you didn't give us a budget or tools I'd say use carbon fiber. Light and strong. If thats outside your skills or budget, feel free to clarify.
>>
>>1023289

Yeah, probably is outta budget. I was thinking treated pine, or using PVC. Which would be easy to do all the fittings and assembly for... Just not fleshed it out enough on how I would attach the ire screens or doors or weight bearing cross beam perches and shit
>>
PVC is a good idea, I think you should run with that. It's unlikley you'll get the help you need here... As only you're going to know exactly how you want this to be...

How do I find out the part number for this headphone jack? There's no writing on it that I can find.

either you desolder the thing and hope there's a manufacturer mark on the bottom

or you scroll through digikey's stock of 3.5mm smt jacks hoping you find one that fits. some calipers to take dimensions would be helpful.
>>
>>1023099
Hmm, I have one of those. Loved it but the headphone jack got too loose to use anymore. I think the battery pack died as well. Rockbox firmware on them made them the best little mp3 player I've owned.

But yeah
>>1023121
Is right, your shit outta luck when it comes to exact replacement. If it was me I'd just get a small female ended cable and solder it onto the pads where the old jack was. Sure little dangle out but it will still be useful again. Make sure to put a small strain relief and seal the hole and you be golden.

I attempted to make a backyard foundry lining a steel bucket with some plaster and with a plaster lid. My heat source is some charcoal and my crucible is graphite.

My problem is, I'm having trouble getting the crucible hot enough to melt any soda cans. It's hot as hell, but the cans just sit there. I'm lining the bottom and sides a bit with charcoal, lighting them with lighting fluid and a utility lighter, then putting the crucible in and adding some more charcoal.

Anyone have experience with this? Please help.

Anyone here have any knowledge they can share?

Im pretty serious about this project and any advice on any of the components will definitely help me.

Im looking to create a good makeshift bike generator that I pedal on to charge a reserve/battery.

Im pretty lost, I've read others projects but everyone seems to use what was laying around, some take apart treadmill motors etc.

Some determine how to create their build for a specific battery and amperage, Im still confused about watts/volts/amps to be honest.

Do I start by looking at how much energy im going to want and find a battery that meets it, then work backwards from there? working out the angles and things like how many rotations the wheel needs to make in comparison to the motor to output a certain current.

Any advice on any of the components id likely run into or use is appreciated.

Pic related.

your amplifier will (usually..) have a screw marked GND - attach to this. If not, use any body screw on the amp - this is also the onlything that should be attched to this, turntable GND to amp GND, do not into radiators n shit.

Can also try without, will not blow up, but will probably hummm lotz.
>>
>>1025062
It goes to the ground screw for your Phono input. All Phono inputs have them

If your amp doesnt have a Phono input, you arent going to get much sound at all.
Its a special input with RIAA equalization

so i bought a helicoil kit for my timing belt tensioner, on my subaru outback.
Its beeen a 2 month project, dont have time to do more research, someone please tell me what size helicoil i need to buy. The bolt is 9.6 mm thick on the threads, on a 14 mm bolt, is this standard ? or custom? I believe the pitch is 1.25 mm.

I also bought a 14mm tap when my original pklan was epoxy in the hole, drill , tap, it ended up being too large, how could that be?
is 1.25mm pitch bolts skinnier than 1.5 mm bolt?
Someone please explain, or just link me to the product i neeed. I may just sauce the car in gasoline and put a torch to it if i dont fix it this week.

Also, worst project thread?
I think a head gasket job on a ej25 with no automotive exp is a good candidate.

Whats yours?

I want to make a wooden cradle for my phones wireless charger. At a glance this shouldn't be a difficult task, however, I have no tools and no friends or family to borrow them from. I did, however, take shop class in high school which was about ten years ago.

I guess I just need wood, and a device to carve a circle out of it and a "tunnel" for the cord to go through. Do any places allow you to borrow tools or use them for a period of time?
