Let's say you've got land that's not connected to the grid. You can get to towns and cities, but it takes a while, ( a day or so.)

What are some cheap DIY solutions to common amenities?

Example: instead of buying a small wind turbine, use a windmill and an alternator.

Etc.

Brainstorming at this point for a new property for personal use, and I'm a cheap prick. The climate is very cold year round with little trees. Think coastal tundra.

I have hunting land up in Northern Minnesota with no grid ties. I truck in water since I am not there for more than a week so a well would be a waste of money and time.

I have a few car batteries that I got for free that I use for lights. They are hooked up to cheap solar chargers (Harbor Freight) to keep them charged between visits. I bring a small generator with for power needs. Cabin has a wood stove there for heat.

I use an outhouse to shit and a tree to piss. I keep a sealed bucket of hydrated lime in the outhouse to cut down on the smell and I move usually once a year which means the hole doesn't need to be overly deep.

I keep a hanging camp shower there and heat up water to take a quick shower. I use dry shampoo to keep my hair clean.

I cook on the stove mostly but keep a propane stove there with some small propane canisters.

I sleep on an old twin sized bed because air mattresses suck.

What else do you want to know? You don't really need electricity and you don't need internet.
>>
>>1015695
Thanks, really good suggestions.

What if my power needs are a little more intense? I was thinking of growing my own vegetables, and the only way to do it is hydroponics. I have access to a large indoor area that can be used to house it.

>inb4 weed farm

It's not, but there's really no way to ask without making it sound like it. Solar is nice, but I'd only be seeing the sun half of the year. I'm going to need to get creative with power needs, and storage.

Can't use wood stove for heat either, not enough wood. Preferably electric heat.
>>
>>1015700
Electricity is not a good option for heat. What do you do when your power generation fails?

I assume that this, like 99% of other of the grid posts on /diy/ is just fap material to you.

If you're in a tundra area, fuck growing food. Hunt. It's what indigenous people do in the tundra. Grow some potatoes in a bucket to get some extra calories.

For heat, stick with a fuel and make sure your dwelling is insulated to high fucking hell.

Consider fuel oil or propane. Get a giant out door tank and have it filled once or twice a year.

You can generate power with fuel too. That is how a generator works.

Since you're going to scrap the idea of growing veggies in the middle of the tundra, what are your power needs really going to be? Maybe a small tv or laptop to watch DVDs?

Since this is 4chan you're going to say you need internet which means you have to go with satellite internet. As long as you don't go full retard, you don't need some high end gaming PC, you need something minimal like a chromebook or a tablet. You want something with next to no current draw.

You'll want a smokehouse to smoke meat and fish. You'll want it to be bear and animal proof.

$10,325.00 USD

Ten thousand three hundred and twenty five dollars.

Was the steel used in this box folded a thousand times and is strong enough to cut through tanks?

How do the Snap On salesmen get poor mechanics to pay this much for a tool box when the money could go 1/10 of the way on a fucking home mortgage instead? Why would the owner of a shop pay this much for a box? Do they hire the world's dumbest accountants to budget the cost of tools for them?

Unfortunately I think the only answer you'll get goes something like:

"if you actually used tools everyday then you would understand"

No one can ever seem to objectively say where the value comes from.
>>
>>1015457
It's a combination of name brand, fanboyism, and the fact that all the tools come with a lifetime guarantee. Also, they deliver it right to the shop.

That said, a know a lot of mechanics who don't buy snap-on stuff because it's do expensive.

Hey /diy/, recently I installed these screws to prevent my stepfather from preventing me from not allowing me to lock my door for privacy and safety reasons and to prevent invasion of privacy, but somehow I need to how to get rid of these things, even worse he's installed them into the back door of the computer room where he now is so the door can't be opened.

Best removal method? My dremel slicing tool didn't seem to do any good, since it's a kind of sheet metal screw.

http://www.nuttybolts.com/company/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/one-way-round-head-sheet-metal-screws-300x224.jpg

Pic identifies this is my vice grips.

Can they work with the screws blocking my back door that connects to the computer room? He wants it blocked so I don't open the door and I do not like that.

-Can the head be grabbed with vise grips? If it's a panhead style one way screw, most panhead style one way screws can be removed using a visegrip to unscrew them out.

-There are commercial removal tools, I own a set of these screwdriver like tools but rarely use them, but don't go and buy one, since there's many kinds and they're very expensive, and not guaranteed to work.

-Use a dremel tool with cutting disc to slot the head and use regular screwdriver to remove. If you do have one, make sure it cuts sheet metal
or regular metal, depending on the kind. Most kinds are usually sheet metal today from what I know.

-Use a center punch placed on the sloped portion( as close to the outer edge of screw head as possible) of the one way and rap repeatedly with a hammer (how hard?). Once the the head makes a few turns and rises above the surface, just use the vise grips to grab the head and complete the unscrewing. This method works on the flat headed ones that are flush with surface and hardest to remove. Just remember to direct the fast raps to "walk" the screw, no hard blows needed. A hard blow can cause the punch to slip and mar the work. This method has never failed me.

If you make a hard blow to the screw, you probably won't be able to get it out.

I knew it was a really bad idea to mount the car battery up high like that, but I was too impatient to weld a place for it to go lower down. I got two feet, fell over sideways, and tore off most of a knee ligament. I can still walk and ride a bike fine, but anything that requires a lot of agility will cause a serious sprain right away. Ligaments don't grow back.

What does /diy/ think of ordering tools and shit from China?

I want to get into diy but I'm a poorfag.
Prices online are much better than local and the products look alright. For example, a heat gun from Bunnings is $49, or $26 from aliexpress.

Jesus Christ. Kids these days. Back in my day, we had to fix our own shit because we were too poor to pay somebody to fix it, not because we only had enough money to pay the mechanic/plumber/etc. and weren't able to buy tools. It was necessity, /diy/ BECAUSE you're a poorfag.

I was at my parents house and they're building houses on the other side of the community. This driver got lost and proceeded to turn around in front of my parents house which is at the end with a circle. Managed to clip the mailbox 25 degrees. When I asked for info he starts crying, says its his third strike, and is going to lose his job. Didn't know what to do. Ended up talking to a supervisor over the phone. Feel like a piece of shit /diy/. Cost this guy his job over a mailbox? How much of a POS am I? If it was my house I wouldn't mind much but their neighbours are retired and they saw it too. It was one of these big boys pic related.

>Cost this guy his job over a mailbox? How much of a POS am I?

It was not ONE mailbox, obviously he has a history, which proves him UNSUITABLE for his job, he crying about it doesn't change a fucking thing, if he is a danger to everyone else, then he shouldn't be doing it
>>
>>1018431
This. Next time it'll be a kid on a bike. He should flip burgers instead.
>>
Had a teen in my neighborhood drive home drunk and hit my mail box.

Mailbox at the time was a custom built 1/8 inch thick steel box from the past owner who got his hit with a bat back in the 80s.

Ripped the whole right side of her car to shreds. And she never came to my house to let me know so I follows the trail of parts to her house.

Made her parents and her pay $400 for a new mailbox and to not involve the police. People that truly are worried would have given you the cost of the mail box and than some to stop the issue.

Someone on 3rd strike has had enough chances to learn.

make a stencil and engrave it
>>
Look up laser engraved zippo.

Guy used to do it at the local flea market, it was $25 plus the cost of the item or you could bring an item in. He used specialized equipment that probably cost a good bit of coin, but he did zippos, dog tags and blocks of glass as well as anything metal that was relatively flat(he had a knife blade on display).
>>
>>1018240
Used engravers are usually expensive, so best to /diy/ the design then have it lasered or mechanically engraved. Any trophy shop can do that. Ask what format they want the drawing in so you can bring it as a file.

My bedroom is next to the bathroom.
I can hear everytime someone pees. It's been like that for the last 6 years, and it's finally killing me slowly. I have to turn on music when I hear someone going to the bathroom. And my brother is a inconsiderate asshat who is most likely aware he's too loud but still doesn't give a shit. I have to sleep with headphones on, with rain sound so nobody wakes me up.

What materials are good to cover the wall of my bedroom? Wouldn't want to cover the bathroom's wall because the shower would get whatever material wet.
I'm on a budget as well. Third-world spic here. Hence having the bedroom next to the bathroom everyone uses.

I'm a jr. developer who works from home, so it's like that all the fucking time. It's one of the main reasons I want to get more money and move out to an appartment.

Not sure if this general has been done before or not, but

Discuss locks, brands, technique, theory, etc

Beginner's Guide:
-lockpicking101.com is a good place to start
-You don't need a bunch of fancy stuff for lockpicking. A tension wrench, a small hook pick, and a half diamond pick work wonders. Save your money for locks
-be gentle
-a cheap deadbolt (Kwikset) with removable pins goes a long way in the beginning

not expert here but looks like there is no way to take that housing apart. there might be a master key [that a lock smith would have] that allows the lock barrel itself to slide out thus exposing the pins etc.
