Hey guys, i just got an arduino uno from my parents and started playing around with it, now my brother (who works in some electronics business) brought me a bunch of stuff to build around and i have absolutely no idea what it is or what i can do with it.
I'd appreciate every bit of information.
I have basic information about capacitors, resistors and leds.

You might be able to give me some insight as to what I'm doing wrong here, /diy/.
Some background: I'm on a bicycle racing team, and many of the races we do have significant climbs on them, and the lighter you and your bike are overall, the faster you can climb.
Water is heavy (a full bike bottle is about a pound and a half), so a common trick is to use a condensed gel-type carbohydrate source instead of water bottles, and get your water at the feedzones instead.
I'm racing on a budget, and buy maltodextrin 50 pounds at a time, to mix my own bottles (for training and flat races) for a tiny fraction of what commercial endurance fuels otherwise cost.
I've been trying to make my own maltodextrin-based energy gels, but the problem I'm having, is that they get too thick to be usable at the concentration I need it to be in. A typical single-serving of commercial energy gel is about 30 grams for 90 calories. When I mix it at that concentration, it's more like paste than anything you can squeeze out of a bottle.
What am I doing wrong, /diy/?
For reference here's what I'm trying to emulate (minus any flavoring, of course): http://www.hammernutrition.com/products/hammer-gel-reg.hg.html
Any constructive input you can give is appreciated.
Google tells me that alcohol and heat both help it dissolve.
Did you even try?
http://runwithperseverance.blogspot.com/2011/06/how-to-make-your-own-energy-gel.html
>>1017947
Yes, I've 'tried' several times, and yes, heat in some form or another was involved, either a pot on the stove, or in the microwave, or boiling water from my electric kettle.
NOTE: I am NOT having problems getting it to dissolve. It's the viscosity that's the problem.
I've used an electric mixer (the traditional type, with two beaters) to mix it.
Once I get the concentration right, and it comes back down to room temperature, it's too thick, more paste-like than gel-like, and as such it's not usable; you can't even get the majority out of the squeeze-flask you're supposed to put it in, so you can use it while you're riding.
In order to get it back out of the flask to clean it, I had to put it in the microwave to get it thin enough to pour back out.
The viscosity at room temperature needs to be about equivalent to maple syrup at room temperature. A little thicker is OK, it just needs to be able to flow, but not much thicker than that or you won't be able to get it all out.
So far as your link is concerned:
Why the fructose?
Why the liquor?
Why the pectin?
I don't just do things blindly. I want to know what the purpose of those ingredients are.

You don't actually have to answer those questions if you don't want to, I've emailed the author at the link you posted with questions.
Im lookig for a few pointers to start me off. Google has let me down.
Ive got this old PC which had a failed Hard drive. I want to put an old blank HDD in and install a lynux system. Thing is the bios dosent recognise the hard drive. Any tips, or ideas folks?
>>1017879
check connectors
does it spin up at all? if not, it's power, if yes, it's mb
>>1017879
what do you mean 'doesn't recognize'?
it never shows up in the bios? is it IDE or SATA? is the IDE or SATA controller enabled? do you know for sure the old blank hdd works?
>>1017882
they work in an external reader on another pc. Theyre sata
I have to split a couple of cables, but have become to paranoid to just rat-tail.
Currently poorfag so can't get a soldering iron but I have a hotglue gun and a shit ton of self-vulcanizing tape.
How safe would that be in the long term?
>>1017789
Depends on what is going through the wire, if you're running a light with a double A battery it's probably safe. If you're running an audio system in your car it very well could catch on fire. If the cables ever separate enough they can arc and cause a fire(or if there's flammable vapors it could cause a flash over or explosion).
What I'm getting at is that there's no way to know if it's safe unless we know what the application is.
I can tell you that it won't work as well as you think it will. If nothing else the glue will eventually become more plyable as it gets older and it won't hold as tightly. And hot glue doesn't like to cling to copper anyways, it will but not as well as fabrics and paper.
What you want to get are crimp connectors, butt connectors, or at the very least wire nuts. But crimp connectors have been used to bond stranded wire for years in applications where soldering would be near impossible or too time consuming, or where there will be a lot of vibrations(personal boats for example).
Hot glue will work as well as electrical tape will, the reason people use it on circuit boards is for stress relief, so if the wire moves it's not putting as much strain on the solder joint, but I personally don't think that's necessary. I've never needed to do that.
And you can get a soldering iron for $10 that'll do an excellent job bonding wires together. It's not intricate work.
>>1017808
Simple on desk lamps. And a laptop charger.
On one of the lamps I twinned the strands individually, applied a good layer of hot glue, twin two layers of vulk tape on each cable, apply another layer of glue in between the cables and then two more layers of vulk around the finished cable. On a scale 1-10 how safe does that sound?
Yeah I have been soldering before but the iron broke a couple of months ago and now I'm almost scraping pennies just for good (lot of paid dept last month)
hot glue? why? how does that make any sense? cheap electrical tape alone would be safer and less costly.
Got my cheap headphones aux input stuck inside the headphones, what do /diy/?
take it apart and fix that
fix electric
Who knows what this is used for? And what it's called

I need your help with what should I do with it. My room is too dark and I prefer the brighter light in my room than what it is currently. So I've been thinking about painting that dark wooden ceiling into the white or light grayish color. English is my 3rd language so I don't know how this type of ceiling is called or that shit that supports the roof. Anyway that straight wood that supports the roof would be painted in dark oak color, and the rest would be in light grayish color.
Do I need to sand it down or not? The ceiling wasn't touched for over 30 years, since it was built. There is no polishing thing on it, the wood don't have the feel of being smooth or something.
I would like to keep the look of the wood, I want the texture of wood to be visible!!
If you have any idea how to improve the idea, just tell, I'm open to all the ideas and help is needed! Thank you in advance very much!
Also, don't get me on the bulb shit not working, it literally died 2 days ago, and I was nowhere near some shop to get new one.
Phone is fucking with me, this is wrong picture
Here you go, right one
>>1017709
that's a very nice wood finish, to paint over it would be a travesty.
II agree with >>1017721, don't paint that.
Do something like picture related to brighten the ceiling up. If you don't like it reversible and a lot less work.
My sink is clogged, and I can't run the dishwasher because the sink gets full of water. When the sink gets full, it drips out through the bottom of the garbage disposal. I want to take the U pipe off the bottom and see if that's where the clog is, but I don't have the tool to do it. what kind of wrench do I need? what should I be looking for? what should I expect? I am practically illiterate when it comes to stuff like this, but it has to be done. I would appreciate some suggestions
Damn, I remember being exactly there.
You need a pipe wrench. Pic related.
And make sure you turn it in the right direction, you can damage the pipe.
Have you tried running the disposal when it is full of water? 10/10 times my sink is clogged on the disposal side it's because the disposal has stuff in it and not the trap, either stuff that my wife added and forgot about or clogged with fiberous stuff like to much onion peel at once (it was a weak disposal.)
>>1017643
Yeah I've tried that. what happens is, the disposal side water level goes down but the water level in the other side goes up or vice versa
Hey /diy/, I want to purify my home's air. I've heard moss is a good way to do that as well as being a nice ease into horticulture. I have a question though, I've blended moss up along with adding milk to the mixture and applied it to some pieces of wood I've found around my neighbourhood. How often do I water the moss? It's quite dry and I'm afraid to water it too much and get mold/rot.
Also, I believe the moss I've applied to the wood is pleurocarpous. If that's any help
Pic related (plate is kept in indirect sunlight)
Thanks
>>1017541
>being a nice ease into horticulture
kek
you'd have to be really really bad to actually kill moss
Some constructive input would be appreciated!
>>1017660
Wild moss in a blender with milk and water, paint it on some kind of substrate. Wood, rock, whatever. If it doesn't hold moisture well (like a rock) use a spray bottle from walmart or something to mist it with water to keep it MOIST but not dripping wet. This is because moss is not technically a plant and has no root system and so can only thrive in damp areas. Keep it out of direct sunlight (or limit the direct sunlight) and around room temp. If it dries out it will either outright die or do dormant. Don't water it, mist it with a bottle. Remember, if you're seeing droplets of water you've mist too much and might encourage mold or something during the early stages of growing your moss. If you want more moss, keep in mind that moss produces SPORES not SPEEDS which spreads by water.
What would be better - a set of screwdrivers or a set of removable heads for one screwdriver?
I'm working on getting a decent toolbox for home and I just have several regular screwdrivers so I'm wondering what you'd recommend. Obviously I'm not a professional and I'd be using those for small repairs and furniture assembling at home.
>>1017363
Handle with multiple bits. Get a very nice handle that fits well in your hand. Bits are disposable. You will lose them, break them, and buy more. Make sure the handle accepts standard sizes. In my experience ratcheting handles aren't that useful. The old Easydriver is the only time I've liked a standard ratcheting screwdriver but they don't make them anymore and the knock offs are crap. Bit storage in the handle is also pretty useless. I like handles with solid cores. None of that rubberized plastic shit like in your picture.
Both.
Get a set of common size long shank Phillips and flat drivers. Maybe six of each.
And a set with a thousand small bits. Phillips, Flat, Torx etc in all the sizes.
>>1017363
Secret technique I just learned in the last couple years, watching Midway USA and Clickspring.
Get your box of cheap hex bits, and grind the straight slots to the exact size of your screws if you don't have one. Bits are cheap and replaceable. Or find the exact right bit and label it. Like I just labelled the bit for my 1911 stock.
Hex screw drivers are amazing and in most instances there is no reason to not use them. I got a hex torque screwdriver, as well as adapters for my big boy torque wrenches.
The only problem for deep precision screws and nuts you still need a tool with a profile that's no bigger than the screw head.
You could just go down to the store and buy whatever precision screwdriver set, but that's usually the ones with the bright chrome handles and shit machining that your dad had. Fuck those.
Features your need in your precision set:
-A free spinning butt. So you can apply pressure to it while unscrewing so you don't screw your thread.
-A hex shaft, or a hole in the handle so you can put a lever in it to turn it. With a hex shaft (A small shaft, not like the replacable hex tool, I mean the hex shaft is the exact same diameter as the tip and is continuous and goes all the way into the handle) so you can put a wrench on the hex shaft and apply torque that way.
I got a cheap brand that I was pretty happy with hex shafts for my precision set. As I chowder the heads up, I will replace them with Wiha or something. I just reground the big phillips since that sees the most wear, and see if the new edge is good enough, or if it's time for a new one.
I also recommend buying a set that comes in a nice case. Losing your precision set by letting them float around the shop individiually sucks.
Any help? Door needs to be closed due to it being a shared apartment and y gfs privacy.

A) replace window with AC unit.
B) Buy dewars daily and flood floor with liquid nitrogen.
>>1016388
Rental so I cant do an ac unit :( I guess Ill have to get some fans but wondering what would be the best way to set em up
>>1016386
buy a portable AC unit you can take with you when you move. Relatively cheap, setting up takes 10 seconds and you can store it away when not needed.
This is assuming leaving the window partially open is not a security issue
hey /diy/, CAD designer here.
i desperetely need a 3d mouse for my work, however they're expensive ash shit and i'm a poor student.
is there a way i can build one ? are there any cheap Chinese ones i could buy ?
thank you

Hey guy /diy/generates! Helping my dad clean out an old shed behind a house he just bought, and there were several finned radiators in there. You know the ones for hot water, right? Basically a copper tube with a shitload of washers soldered on them? Well, my girlfriend is a pinerest addict, and she shows me stupid shit all the time, but I remembered a pool heater built from black PVC, and I got an idea. I have a pretty decent sized garage, (20x 24 ft) and I was thinking about adding heat anyway. Here is my idea: Take a plastic barrel, insulate the fuck out of it for heat storage, run one of these fuckers on the roof with a pump constantly running a water/mthanol mix thru it, into the tank sucking the water from the bottom. have another feed run by a separate pump towards the top pushing the same mix through the radiators. Use a relay with a thermostat to control the pump feeding the radiators, and some other setup to measure the water in the coil to control that pump so I'm not cuirulating cold water in the tank when the sun goes down. It wouldn't be my main system, just something to help. Any thoughts?
>>1014270
>any thoughts
Paragraphs are underrated.
trying to do this from my phone because internet is still out from the last storm. It's a bitch.
>>1014277
Well there's your answer.
Anyone here woodwork pipes or know some good pipe resources?
>>1013839
Not really, I know Briar and Bog oak where popular woods to make them out of though.
>>1013839
Not that I know of more than you, making a wood pipe is basically wood carving. The biggest thing about wood pipes is proper usage, care, and maintenance while using it. That way it doesn't get destroy or has it lifespan shortened.
